Lou Reed, the singer and guitarist of 1960s rock band The Velvet Underground, has died.
According to Rolling Stone, Reed died today. The cause of his death has not yet been revealed, but his underwent a liver transplant in May. He was 71.
Reed was known for his distinctive deadpan voice and deeply personal and explicit lyrics.
In a career that spanned more than five decades, Reed was a rock 'n' roll frontman, a glam rock god and an avante garde musician who defied categorization.
Lou Reed was born March 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York.
He moved to Manhattan in 1964 and began working as an in-house songwriter for Pickwick Records.
Following a minor hit with the single 'The Ostrich,' Reed formed The Velvet Underground, a band which didn't gain commercial success but which has a reputation as one of the most influential in the history of rock 'n' roll.
