A little over a month after the death of founding Yes bassist Chris Squire, the legendary prog-rock group is set to return to the road for a joint North American tour with Toto that kicks off Friday in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Yes guitarist Steve Howe says the trek will give the band the chance to salute Squire — who was the only constant member of the group over its 45-plus-year career — while also allowing fans to commiserate over his passing.
“It is pretty exceptional that Chris has been at all those Yes shows [over] all those years, so we’re gonna have to respect that and pay some tribute to that, which we’re very happy to be able to do,” Howe tells ABC Radio. “And let people kind of find a way, an inner voice to express and get over and hopefully heal some of the sadness that’s gone down.”
Howe said the decision to carry on with the tour was made easier because Yes already had brought ex-band member Billy Sherwood to fill in for Squire after Chris announced in May that he’d been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and would be unable to join the group on its already scheduled joint trek.
