Renaissance reborn as 40-year-old classical rock band tours again in Florida

Renaissance - it means a rebirth or revival of classical influence when you look in a dictionary.

Back in 1969, it was the name of a new musical group “devoted to the experimentation between rock, folk, and classical forms,” according to its website. Now Renaissance has been reborn for a U.S. tour that saw it land in Florida for three concerts (Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando) recently.

Following a 3-hour set at The Plaza Live in Orlando, lead singer Annie Haslam spent time with Times-Union reporter Dan Scanlan to talk about the band’s past, present and future.

Renaissance was led by Haslam and guitarist/composer Michael Dunford. Its classical music-based sound invaded the United States in the mid-1970s as progressive rock stations played its albums like “Turn Of The Cards” and “Scheherazade And Other Stories.” The band even played at Carnegie Hall, then issued a 1976 double album called “Live At Carnegie Hall” with The New York Philharmonic after a similar session with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London
