THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?

TWO PARADES MEET ON THE STREET
One went to walls and wars
One went to love and peace
I took the road less traveled
and am still here to speak

Two parades passed by my street
One a military culture with instruments of doom and defeat
the other exultant with this happiness of which i speak
i took the smiling path /and feel Blessed
by who we are and what we feel and see

Two marches strode up my streets
One in uniform ,silent and obedient
The other a raggle taggle band of colorfilled  gypsies
Rainbow curved and deliciously sweet
i took the curving path/and avoided the IEDs

Two paths present themselves for our attention
One is death which i almost forgot to mention
The other is LIFE,beaming like a radio station
Community of course,volunteer,small,precious and autonomous
You are that path.I am grateful to walk with you
In peace and harmony, and civilian culture, too!

IF YOU ARE JAZZ
YOU ARE ALIVE&WELL
You have stories in sound to tell
You may have a personal hell
Yet the Heavens you scatter like rich bank notes
Make the world around you float
You enter a higher state of consciousness
when you improvise your life.
The only rule is-STAY ALIVE!
Once you leave this life
a new one will be created over yours
Sculptures and statues that do not sing
just connote the brilliance you had once upon a rhyme
The only First and Last Commandment is always
STAY ALIVE!IMPROVISE!

TONY KLINGER REVIEW

http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=20798
Klinger. Tony: The Who and I (book)
Tony Klinger is a British film director/producer and author, who has worked on such films as 'Get Carter', 'Gold', 'Shout at the Devil', Deep Purple's 'Rises Over Japan', and The Who's 'The Kids Are Alright'. The Who and I documents the authors tumultuous time working with The Who and their management team on the creation of 'The Kids Are Alright' film, the late '70s documentary that chronicled the then 10 + year career of the band. Originally titled Twilight of the Gods: My Adventures with The Who, this latest edition changes the title and adds some extra & recent content from the author, as he continues to reflect on this turbulent time in his life, a motion picture that seemed doomed from the start but miraculously got made and actually came out pretty damn good. While some might deem Klinger's words here as a bit of sour grapes, and wish that the author would just drop all the hard feelings from events that took place over 40 years ago, it still makes for a fascinating read. His regular run-ins with Who manager Bill Curbishley, battling for the director's role with Jeff Stein (which he eventually succumbed to and took on the Producer's role), his alliance with Executive Producer Sydney Rose, and of course the crazy interactions with the band themselves, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, and John Entwistle, all make for chilling entertainment. Chapter 12, 'Shooting Keith Moon: Looney Tunes', is worth the price of admission alone. Here, the author goes into great detail a week long shoot at Moon's house and about, describing the drummer's now legendary slide into oblivion in graphic terms, yet by the end of the book he charmingly refers to Keith as the one member of the band who really enjoyed being around, despite his many demons & excesses. This is an account of rock & roll debauchery and excess at its most harrowing.
Through it all, you'll get first hand accounts of all the stops & starts of the film, the funding issues, the battles between the author and the director & management, and a myriad of other unbelievable tales. But hey, it's rock 'n' roll right? These things do happen, but the important thing is a legendary film was eventually made and released. If you are a fan of 'The Kids Are Alright' film, this is a must read. Not so much a book about The Who, but of course they are deeply involved in the overall story. Sadly, Moon would pass away before the film was released, but you can read about some of his final months here, and watch the movie for a look at him throughout his short but meteoric life.

TONY KLINGER REVIEW

Book Reviews
'The Who & I'
By: Tony Klinger Description: Tony Klinger, renowned producer of The Who's "The Kids Are Alright" film, has started a PledgeMusic campaign for "The Who and I" Box Set, Book and Memorabilia.
The Box Set contains Tony's new book "The Who and I," an audio book / CD, reproduced memorabilia, and a reproduction of "The Kids Are Alright" press kit and photos!
Verdict: For those not in the know, Tony Klinger is a British film-maker, author and media executive.
He began his career as Assistant Director on The Avengers in the 1960s, directed several rockumentaries and headed media companies both in the UK and the USA.
Angry management, crazy people, women jumping naked out of giant cakes, fireworks going off in your hand, trips to the Pleasure Chest, run in's with Steve McQueen, afternoon teas with Ringo Starr, drunken sessions with Rick Danko of The Band, hotels demanding money up front before they checked in, travelling, constantly travelling, all the while trying to juggle schedules, money and egos, that’s what Tony Klinger remembers from his time with the Who when he was making a film, “The Kids are Alright” with, for and about them!
The packaging of “The Who & I “project accurately and faithfully represents the flavor of the project and the time they originally created the film, “The Kids are Alright”, and so that forms the central themes of this wondrous new project.
Reading just the book alone and you instantly know why Klinger felt compelled after all this time to bring it forth to the Who fans, and indeed fans of music, in general.
"I want to tell this story, because there are so many of us, you and me included, who love rock music and film, who should know what really goes on, and this book tells it like it is," Klinger himself explains.
"The Who are the icons of both the sight and sound of My Generation. They sounded and looked angry and it wasn’t an act. The Who were among those who invented Mod England, which forced the world look up and pay attention."
"Their energy demanded your focus, whether it was Townshend’s duck walk borrowed with love from Chuck Berry, his skinny whirling arms bashing out the chords, or Roger Daltrey swinging his microphone, more a weapon as he marched to the beat punched out by the bass played with metronomic intensity by the Ox, John Entwistle or the only drummer I ever saw who could lead a melody line, the maniacal Keith Moon."
"And then when you got past the image there was the music, that brilliant, original and fantastic music. How could such sounds spring out of such chaos? The answer is that it’s the chaos that creates those sounds, that environment which enables a different view, a special sideways on look at our world that is so dynamic, true and genuine that we all have to take notice."
“The Who, maybe more than any other group epitomise that special rock lifestyle of danger mixed with brilliance to create a bubble of such power that we all want to see and listen and share."

Reading this incredibly detailed and insightful new book from Klinger and one learns things from the very off. Such as “The Who & I” was originally known as “Twilight of the Gods”. See, there you go, betcha didn't know that now, did ya!
Within Klinger's words you sense that The Who weren't just band members that he was hired to control, to babysit, moreover they were a group of young men that took to one another (Klinger inclusive) in a way that allowed very special, and genuine times to flow.
Klinger talks about the band members still with us and rather lovingly about those that, in his own words, "... no longer get to go on stage because they’re playing bass and drums with the celestial choir."
Via this PledgeMusic campaign noted above and within the link below, you can buy, and for just £49.99 the Limited Edition Box Set, signed and numbered by Tony Klinger, along with just the book detailed above, a One Off Original Tour Jacket, a Reproduction "The Kids Are Alright" signed A1 Film Poster, and many other really cool things.
