MORE RAIDING THE ROCK VAULT WITH JOHN PAYNE

mcauleyMarch 10, 2013 – If you were an outsider looking in, you would swear that Las Vegas must be putting a fully funded marketing effort behind the resurgence of the classic metal movement. Outside of the dozens of world class musicians from the genre residing in Sin City, in the last 6 months the Broadway show “Rock of Ages” opened at the Venetian in late 2011. After that, Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp relocated their HQ to Las Vegas in January, and last night the new and highly touted show, “Raiding the Rock Vault” (RTRV) Premiered at the LVH.  My short review of the show? GO CHECK IT OUT! If you have the time to read on, my short review of the show is below.
Not knowing exactly what to expect from the show’s premier last night, I am delighted to tell you that I enjoyed every bit of it! My worries of having to sit through a 20 minute dissertation as to how Led Zeppelin was formed were extinguished 3 minutes into the show when the band broke into their opening number by The Who, and the music just kept coming!
The all-star line up of RTRV consists of: Robin McAuley (MSG/Survivor), Howard Leese (Heart/Paul Rodgers), Paul Shortino (Quiet Riot/King Kobra), Tracii Guns (Guns N’ Roses/LA Guns), John Payne (Asia/Roger Daltrey),  Andrew Freeman (The Offspring/Lynch Mob), Jay Schellen (Hurricane/Asia), and Michael T. Ross (Lita Ford/Missing Persons) with several of the band changing roles and instruments throughout the show.
It would be a travesty if I didn’t mention that the show is 90% concert, 10% production show. Being a music junkie, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The few times that a loose story and time line was introduced, it was done in an entertaining fashion, and just long enough for the band to take a drink of water and wipe their brow with a towel.

LINK: John Payne interview

How busy is John Payne, and his band Asia Featuring John Payne? Here’s his 2013 schedule: “More videos, more singles, the album release, weekend warrior dates and perhaps a fanfest spectacular with ex-members in Vegas this summer.”
Oh, there’s more: When not leading his own band on the weekends, Payne is set to present a new multi-media show called “Raid the Rock Vault” in Las Vegas, beginning in March. The concert will encompass the entire arc of classic rock, from the 1960s through the 1980s, as presented by a star-filled band that will reportedly include guitarist Tracii Guns.
Meanwhile, Asia Featuring John Payne — a group formed when Payne, after some 14 years of leading Asia, won a court battle to continue despite its founding members’ decision to reunite — has just released the first of what promises to be a number of videos from their forthcoming long player, called Americana.
In this SER Sitdown, Payne discusses his new music, career intersections with the Who’s Roger Daltrey and Ronnie James Dio, and what it was like having to fight to hold onto a band he’d given so much of his life to …
NICK DERISO: The new single “Seasons Will Change” advances a long-awaited new AFJP album for 2013. Tell us more about Americana.
JOHN PAYNE: Americana has been a work in progress for several years. Firstly, it’s been a self-produced and self-financed project but, also due to other projects — and, most importantly, just waiting for the inspiration of the most special songs. I wanted to create the most summarized album of my career, and accept no substitute. We are planning to do as many videos as we can for Americana, culminating in an Americana concert. Expect monthly videos and single releases from us.

EXCLUSIVE: Erik Norlander interview (Part Three)

And here is the final part of the interview that I conducted with the massively talented Erik Norlander late last week. If you missed the first part you can find it here. Or if you want the second part you can find it here. I really enjoyed my chat with Erik, and very much look forward to doing it all again soon. Read on chaps and chapesses:

Jon: Are you planning to record with the Collective again in the future?

Erik: I don’t know. The purpose of the project was really to take songs from my catalogue and re-imagine them in his one singular production. Now I am kinda a prolific bastard and I have a lot of instrumental songs that I have written so to do a second volume there’s more than enough material to do that, so that’s a possibility.

It’s also a possibility to do something, God forbid, original and that would be for me and the guys even to write some new instrumental material in this style, this kind of synthesiser oriented progressive rock with some heavy rhythm section elements.

Obviously I like the prog metal guitar and drums going along with the more classic and vintage keyboard styles so in my music you’ll hear furious double kick bass drums and low tuned Mesa Boogie guitar and then beautiful Mellotron and grand piano and Moog synthesiser going over the top of that. That’s the sound I really like so it would certainly be possible to do some new music like that. So the future is open and I love working with the guys. We get along great both personally and musically and we still have this economic downturn here so studio time is cheap so who knows we may go in and do it all again.]

Jon: I like the way that it appears that you don’t think too far ahead with your career, and you just do all these different things. I think that’s fantastic.

Erik: You know, that’s something that I feel really lucky. As a musician you really want to be doing new things all the time. I mean it would be wonderful to be a band like Yes for example that has been around for 40 some years and all the opportunities that that provides, but you know bands like Yes really have to go out and play 'Roundabout' night after night don’t they? You can’t really go to a Yes show and have them play all new music. You would be disappointed if you didn’t hear 'Heart of the Sunrise' and even 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' or something like that.

They’re kind of obligated to do that and even – you know I work with John Payne from Asia with his version of the band. Even with John Payne we do concerts with him we have to play 'Heat of the Moment' which is a song from before John Payne was in the band, but when you have the name Asia, even if it is the Asia with John Payne and we are focussing on his involvement, you still feel kind of obligated to play those classic songs as well.

John of course has his own take on the song and does it the way he’d always done it in his era of the band, but pulling it back into the conversation I really love the fact that I have so many opportunities to do things.

We have just released an album with my wife Lana Lane called 'Eldorado Hotel', which is her.... I am not even sure what number it is.. number 10 maybe, and that was just a fantastic experience. We think we did the recording in about 3 months, the writing had gone on longer than that of course, the writing and pre-production, and we used a lot of the current musicians that I’ve been working with...the guys from the Galactic Collective, the guys from John Payne’s band.

It’s very nice to keep music very ephemeral and fresh. I think it would be sad and frustrating as an artist if you had to sit in the studio and think, ‘Oh I have to do this album but I must be done by numbers, I must have a song like this and I have to make these fans happy, and I have to make this record label happy, and oh this journalist will give me a terrible review if I don’t do this.’

There are so many artists that are in that box and that would, I am glad I’m not, I am glad I have the freedom to keep doing new and exciting things, so I’m 44-years-old which is not all that old in the greater scheme, but in musician years that is pretty far along, but I feel there is opportunity to go on for years and years from here, and I hope it keeps going in the same way.

Jon: Well I hope you do. Thanks very much for talking to us Erik.........

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
