Ask YES – Friday 17th May 2013 – Steve Howe

Every week a member of YES takes your top twenty questions from Facebook and Twitter.
This week, it’s the turn of guitar virtuoso, Steve Howe.
Jack Trylesinski
Steve, what did you feel yesterday in Lima with Your fans singing all of your songs? Did you expect such reception? How do you feel was the crowd yesterday?
We were pleased with reaction that the fans had, and certainly singing along with us is a nice thing that they do, and we made a very nice start in South America at the show, so thanks very much.
JD Mack
At the very end of the fade out of A Venture from The Yes Album one can hear the start of a blistering electric guitar solo just before the song ends. How much longer was A Venture originally, and is there any chance of the full version being released one day?
Good question! I don’t remember how much longer it went on. The guitar break did start to happen but I can’t remember if it was really good high-quality. One day we might be able to look at the end of that, but I guess you must have turned it up quite loud to be able to hear that start of the guitar break. But it’s a nice balance, and we faded it at a good place.

WIN A STAY AT STEVE HOWE’S CROSS STYLES MUSIC RETREAT

Steve Howe

Let’s face it. Nobody can play guitar like Steve Howe of Yes. However (no pun intended), Ultimate Classic Rock is teaming up with Lagunitas Brewing Company to give away a chance to take a master class with the legend at his Cross Styles Music Retreat this summer!
Held from Aug. 19-23 at the Full Moon Resort in New York’s Catskills Mountains, the camp will offer workshops with Howe and two other guitarists. Howe will also be on hand for special solo performances and Q&A sessions. Complete information about the retreat can be found at its website.
In our exclusive interview with Howe last month, he said that “the central part of this [retreat] is really the lesser-seen side of myself as well as stylistically, [the] solo guitar playing [which] is central to my work. At various times in my career, it gets a lot of attention, because I need to give it a lot of attention, [because] I love it.”

LINK: Yes' Steve Howe Talks Three-Album Tour: 'We Wanted Some Challenges'

Yes' Steve HoweThe guitarist hopes the prog-rock group will continue playing album-centric shows, with 'Drama' and 'Fragile' potentially up next.

Yes guitarist Steve Howe is hoping the group's current "triple header" tour, during which the prog-rock vets are playing three of their '70s albums in their entirety, is a harbinger of things to come.
"I've been saying for a long time that it's about time we didn't just go out and play songs," Howe tells Billboard. "Songs are nice. I love the songs, but it's about time we had a bit more concept around it, and doing albums really appealed to me. So they finally listened and got on board, and everybody seems to like it. I mean, after all, we are an album band, for goodness' sake! I hope this is where we've just started, and another time it'll be 'Drama,' 'Fragile' and something else. We could mix the bag, change it around, keep one in, throw two out. I hope it's the way we go forward."
Yes is currently playing 1971's "The Yes Album," 1972's "Close to the Edge" and 1977's "Going For the One" front to back during its shows, with the "Fragile" hit "Roundabout" as an encore. Howe says the three albums were chosen somewhat randomly, although they do fit a criteria Yes set when it decided on the concept. "We wanted an easy time and a hard time -- in other words, we wanted some challenges to rise to make the three-album concept work," Howe explains. "So 'The Yes Album' is kind of the easy stuff because we've played a lot of it pretty regularly. And the challenges were bringing back 'Close to the Edge, which wasn't too tricky, and then doing 'Going For the One' really did give us some challenges because 'Turn of the Century,' 'Going For the One' (the song), 'Parallels,' those are formidable arrangements and (songs) we haven't done for a long time. We seem to have radically upped the game."

LINK: ‘It’s about the kind of work I do’: Yes/Asia guitarist Steve Howe previews his rangy new summer camp

After a busy summer of touring, both with Yes and with his solo group, Steve Howe plans to share some of what he’s learned in five decades of music making during his first-ever Cross Styles music camp, to be held in August.
Howe promises to bring a uniquely communicative style to the retreat, set for August 19-23, 2013 at Big Indian, New York’s Full Moon Resort. After all, Howe’s a self-taught guitarist, so he understands intimately the concepts of showing through doing — and of every musician’s need for individualism. “I didn’t like school, I didn’t like schooling,” Howe reminds, in an exclusive SER Sitdown. “I didn’t like the aggression, with them ramming things down your throat. I found that music was my release. I could learn at my own pace, learn stuff I wanted to — and develop my own style.”

Guitarist Steve Howe says Yes to playing entire albums in concert

Guitarist Steve Howe says band doing three entire discs on tour

Classic rock / prog rock band Yes, with Steve Howe (left), plays at Sands… (Rob Shanahan, CONTRIBUTED…)
April 06, 2013|By John J. Moser, Of The Morning Call
Guitar wizard Steve Howe is a Yes man.

Howe even recently gave up his slot in the seven-Year-old reunion of 1980s prog rock hitmaking group Asia to concentrate on the similarly reunited Yes, the classic band with which he sold nearly 10 million albums and had timeless hits such as "Roundabout" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart."

When Yes was working through ideas of what to do on its next tour, Howe says it was he who suggested performing complete albums. And when it came to deciding what albums to do, Howe says he was an advocate for the classic albums of the 1970s: "The Yes Album" from 1971, "Close to the Edge" from 1972 and "Going for the One" from 1977.
That will be the playlist when Yes stops April 7 at Sands Bethlehem Event Center.
"I said, Why don't we do some albums, 'cause we hadn't played a complete album on stage since 'Tales from Topographic Ocean' in '73," Howe says in a telephone call from a Chicago tour stop, amazed that his reference is now 40 years in the past.
He said the band — which includes bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and new singer Jon Davison — decided on doing three discs.

LINK: Steve Howe Discusses This Summer's Cross Styles Music Retreat

Steve Howe is not predisposed to retreat, particularly not in the morning.
One of rock music’s most respected and prolific guitar heroes — and a cornerstone of two enduringly iconic classic-rock bands — Howe has eased up just a bit on his overtime, with an eye on getting back to his solo career.
“I’ve got a bit more time on my hands since I left Asia,” said Howe during a recent phone interview from Chicago, where he was on tour with Yes, which is presenting The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going for the One in their entirety.
The tour continues through the end of May, after which Howe has some solo dates planned for June.
Whatever free time he may have left comes from his formal retirement in January from Asia, which he has toured extensively with since 2006 and alternated with Yes tours since 2008.
Some of that free time has been committed to a guitar retreat — the Cross Styles Music Retreat — August 19 to 23 at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York. Guitar players of all skill level and experience are welcome to sign up, as are non-musicians. All-inclusive packages run from $1,195 to $2,495.
“I’ve done a lot of these over the years,” Howe said. “But I haven’t done one here. We did one on a cruise ship once … four days.” With legions of passionate fans, he is used to indulging the star-struck, and interaction with the attendees is definitely part of the experience.
“But you hope at some point the focus is on the music, and guitars, and learning,” he said.
Just not too early in the day.
“You’ll see the day begins with breakfast,” he said with a laugh. “And you’ll see I’m scheduled for the afternoon. I need some time to wake up.”

LINK: Move yourself with Yes man Steve Howe

Steve Howe has been wowing audiences as a guitarist for progressive rock band Yes since 1970. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 12. It was a Christmas present from his parents. The self-taught guitar enthusiast from England went on to have multiple hits with Yes, which released its first album in 1971 and he continues to create solo albums and teach guitar workshops. Now 65 years old, Howe shows no signs of laying his Gibson down anytime soon.

On their current tour, Howe and his fellow Yes members are perfoming 1971's The Yes Album, 1972's Close to the Edge and 1977's Going for the One live. For the group’s casino concerts, the band will be presenting two albums live (The Yes Album and Close To The Edge) due to time restraints.

“Some people only have a few hit songs. We’re lucky to have many popular albums,” Howe said while phoningCitylinkmix.com from Los Angeles. “To perform an album in its entirety presents a concept on stage. It gives us a new feeling. Some years ago, I said to the guys ‘Why not?”

LINK: Steve Howe Planning Solo Work

Steve Howe of Yes and Asia
Change of focus: Steve Howe
Steve Howe is planning solo work during 2013, he’s revealed – including becoming host of a unique music camp.
The guitarist surprised fans by announcing his departure from Asia last month, bringing to an end his third stint with the supergroup.
Now he’s confirmed he’ll head up the inaugural Cross Styles Music Retreat near Woodstock, New York, during August 19-23.
The event includes guitar instruction workshops for players of all levels, plus the chance to jam with Howe and fellow presenters Ray Matuza and Flavio Sala.
“This year I’m getting back to doing some solo dates,” Howe reports. “The retreat is an extension of that. I’ll be enjoying the different things the event will demand of me, as opposed to just doing shows.
“It indulges me in my singular fascination: the guitar. Hopefully my team and the audience can do a little mingling and learn more about each other.”

LINK: Steve Howe to Host Cross Styles Music Retreat August 19 to 23 at Full Moon Resort in Upstate New York

Guitarist Steve Howe will host the first Cross Styles Music Retreat, an event that takes place August 19 to 23 at Full Moon Resort in the Catskill Mountains near Woodstock, New York.
Guitar players of all ages, levels and styles are invited to join Howe and other guest instructors for this music camp; it represents a first for Howe, the Yes guitarist and former member Asia. After a full day of activities, evenings at the retreat will culminate with once-in-a-lifetime jam sessions.
“This year I’m getting back to doing some solo dates, and the Cross Styles Music Retreat is an extension of that,” Howe said. “I'll be enjoying the different things the event will demand of me, as opposed to just doing shows. It's a wider breadth of 'guitarness,' and it indulges me in my singular fascination — the guitar. Hopefully, my team and the audience can do a little mingling and learn more about each other.”
Throughout the Cross Styles Music Retreat, Howe will lead workshops that explore the development and technical aspects of his playing, writing, recording and performing. He also will perform selected pieces and discuss influences and experiences. A Q&A session and meet-and-greet are also planned. Howe will be joined by guitarists Ray Matuza and Flavio Sala, who will provide in-depth advice and analysis to explore and learn from.
“As I'm self-taught and don't read music, I come at doing workshops from a different perspective than many who teach,” Howe said. “I’ll be bringing my experience to the fore through performances, interactions with campers, and daily master classes.”
The camp’s itinerary and guests — including fingerstyle and jazz guitar aficionado Ray Matuza, Italian classical guitarist Flavio Sala, and Martin Guitar’s Dick Boak — reflect Howe’s genre-bridging approach to the instrument.

ABWH REVIEW

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe – Live at the NEC 1989 (2012 Gonzo Multimedia) The fascinating history of YES never ceases to amaze fans musically. None so much as when Messer’s. Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe broke off and attempted to create music that they felt was closer to YES’ original prime directive. A tour, live disc and live DVD resulted but that wasn’t enough. We now have this special three-disc set featuring the band’s entire live show at the NEC recorded on October 24th, 1989. The first two discs handle all the audio content, including member solos and encores, while disc three is devoted to a short 30-minute film of home movies shot by support keyboardist Julian Colbeck. The video shows the band behind the scenes in the dressing room, doing the sound check and performing on stage, all shot from the sidelines with Colbeck’s hand-held video camera. It’s a kind-of fly-on-the-wall look at the band. The sound of the live discs in this deluxe set is superb, first rate for the era and provides a nice sound capsule of the times. This set is only available through: www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
