HEY HEY WE'RE THE OUTLAWS

Over on the Gonzo Weekly, the antecedents of Episode Six the 60s band which once featured several future members of Deep Purple, and which can be found on a Gonzo DVD, have been being discussed.
James Waterworth writes:

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the weekly newsletter, it's very enjoyable and always includes some interesting nuggets and good news (this time, for me, the Steve Hillage DVD reissue). Your story about Episode 6 got me perusing my music bible (Terry Hounsome & Tim Chambre's "New Rock Record") to check up on the other members of the group.

Interestingly, the later line-up included drummer Mick Underwood, who was previously a member of the UK band The Outlaws, which also numbered in its ranks Chas Hodges and Ritchie Blackmore!

Best wishes & thanks again.
James Waterworth

So I decided to check them out and found this:

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)

WEARING MY ART ON MY SLEEVE

i carry my heart in my hands
when we meet-we exchange glances
lances of words

Village Hall-full
of emotional exchanges

One degree of separation
Drink Egyptian sweat!

You are not me
in another skin

Mirror to a mirror stand
echoing infinities

Pain is part of the learning
I dropped in.

Bare foot doctors
dispensing medicinal words

Where it hurts most
is the healing

Cutting out parts of art
that are not of huge heart

Editing emotions
to fit this moment

Knitting the fabric
of us together

"Better"begins with"good"
"Best"is non-competitive

LINK: CHRIS SQUIRE DISCUSSES CLASSIC ALBUMS TOUR AND UPCOMING NEW MUSIC FROM YES

Chris Squire
As Yes enters their 45th year together as a performing unit, they’re taking an extended look at a cross-section of their work over the years, with tour dates which will feature the group performing three of their classic albums — ‘The Yes Album,’ ‘Close To The Edge’ and ‘Going For The One’ in full.
With a fluid lineup that often changed with each album, bassist/vocalist Chris Squire has been the one constant presence through it all (although as he points out, drummer Alan White has been along for nearly all of the ride as well). For Squire, he saw the member turnover as a band benefit, one which he says often “refreshed the musical approach” of Yes as they prepared to make the next album.
It will be a busy year for the group as they revisit these album classics, but there’s also new music on the horizon as well. In the following conversation, Squire lets us know what we can look forward to with the upcoming tour and what he’d like to accomplish with the next Yes album.
First of all, I know this idea has been brewing for a while. How did you end up choosing these three albums?
Well, I think the reason that we chose ‘The Yes Album’ was that was the first album that brought Yes to the attention of a worldwide audience back in 1971, so that was a landmark album for us. And of course, ‘Close To The Edge’ was the first album where we attempted to do a long 20 minute piece of music, which was one side of a vinyl album as it was in those days and so that was another landmark for us in our career. And ‘Going For The One’ was an album that was the first album that we recorded outside of the U.K., so that was a whole new different experience for us. And then we thought that the slightly different shades of Yes on those three albums also complimented each other real well too.
I think the pick of ‘Going For The One’ surprised some people who might have expected you to pick something like ‘Fragile’ or ‘Relayer’ to fill that third slot instead. What was it that pushed you towards that one? It’s an interesting period for the band. That’s the first record that you produced yourselves, right?
We pretty much had co-produced everything with Eddy Offord…..not at the beginning, because we were pretty green in the studio, but from ‘The Yes Album’ onwards, we pretty much co-produced everything. And then when we went to do ‘Going For The One,’ we changed engineers to have this guy John Timperley, who was the resident engineer at the studio in Montreux on Lake Geneva where we recorded that. So the sound changed a bit for that album and from what I remember, there were quite a few heated conversations over the amount of echo that was being used by certain people who loved echo at that time and it got a bit much at times. [Laughs]
But yeah, we missed Eddy, I think and his guiding influence that he had, so you’re right, we were kind of out there with a new character at that time and also throwing in more of our own ideas as well, of course.

LINK: Eric Burdon on New Album, a Third Memoir & Why the 'Animals Are Dead'

Former Soviet Union chief Mikhail Gorbachev helped give "'Til Your River Runs Dry," Eric Burdon's first solo album in six years a lift-off.

Burdon tells Billboard that he met Gorbachev in Germany a few years ago, when the former Animals singer was there to perform on a TV show. The two got into a conversation during a private reception that Burdon says led directly to "Water," which opens the 12-song set, as well as the album's title.

"I was wondering, 'What can I ask this guy that he would know more than I ever know? What can you tell me about? What's the world in for?' " Burdon remembers. "And he said to me, 'Water,' and I went, 'Wow.' The interpreter he was with told me that (Gorbachev's) whole political being is now to promote water awareness and how important it is,' and I would've told him right there and then, 'Well, look, can I join you? Can I help you? Is there anything we can do?'

"And then the lyrics to 'Water' came to my head. I thought, 'This is the best way...to join the program of making people aware of how important water is in today's world.' So that was a long time ago, but the song was just recorded in the last few months."

LINKS: HAWKWIND GIG REVIEW and A VIDEO

Hawkwind fan Si Deards videoed the start  of their Bedford show last weekend - the 1972 narrative "The Awakening" followed by the even older number "Master of the Universe":

And the blog site "Louder than War" has some interesting things to say about the Manchester gig a couple of days previously:

Hawkwind
Manchester Ritz
25th January 2013
The space rock veterans are on tour again, but are they relevant in 2013? More so than you might have expected, it seems.€
One of the stupider things I've read about music this past year - aside, obviously, from all that "guitar music is back!" bollocks (gosh, yes, it was terrible in 2012 wasn't it when there were no guitar bands at all anywhere, well apart from the maybe 400-ish I personally saw and another few hundred thousand worldwide) - is a quote whose origin I can't even be arsed looking up, but apparently someone wrote or said of brilliant new-ish Leeds kosmische-psyche band Hookworms "they're like a Hawkwind it's OK to like". Sorry, what? I wasn't meant to like Hawkwind? Damn.
Yeah, OK, maybe as a young teen who still believed in all that 1976-as-year-zero nonsense I might have scoffed at the suggestion of listening to hairy blokes from Before Punk, but it wasn't long before the twin influences of Spacemen 3 and recreational herbalism pointed my young mind in a more psychedelic direction. In which Hawkwind were very much a band it WAS OK to like, not least because they were clearly as "punk" as they were "hippy". More so, to be honest, with offshoots such as Hawklords and Inner City Unit embracing the musical shifts of the mid to late seventies and feeding this back into the mothership band. Quarter of a century further down my life - and in the 44th year of their career - Hawkwind's place in the Grand Scheme Of Things is generally better recognised - hell, even their Wikipedia entry calls them "a noted precursor to punk rock, and now considered a link between the hippie and punk cultures".

LINK: Peter Stenshoel reviews Chris Squire's 'Fish Out of Water'

Chris Squire Fish out of WaterWhen Yes members each decided to release solo LPs, all roughly in 1975, one of the stronger creations was Chris Squire's "Fish Out of Water." Composition has always been Squire's strong point; that and a muscular electric bass technique. This album readily features both.

To begin the record with strains from London's St. Paul's Cathedral organ and the inclusion of a full orchestra could be warning flags for that sorry state known as rock and roll pretentiousness. Of course, from a strict punk point of view, all progressive rock is condemned as pretentious, but for those who embrace the ideal of a highly developed, through-composed, and cereberal rock music genre, Squire and his orchestrator Andrew Pryce Jackman make these out-sized collaborations work.

Full Album Premiere: Eric Burdon Gets Deeply Personal on 'Til Your River Runs Dry'
Eric Burdon, 'Til Your River Runs Dry'
ABKCO RECORDS
It's been 50 years since Eric Burdon joined the Animals. However, even after fronting War and the Eric Burdon Band, not to mention enjoying a long solo career, Burdon has made what might be his most personal album yet. One of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers breaks down his new album, 'Til Your River Runs Dry, track by track, revealing how he channeled such diverse inspirations as water conservation, Fats Domino and President Barack Obama.
1)"Water" – "Having lived in the arid deserts of Southern California since the 1970s, my interest in water conservation is a very personal concern. Water! The source of life! Some people are squandering the world's most precious resource while others have too little clean water to drink. I sing this song in the hope that I can bring some balance to the issue of water, to bring some attention to the importance of water to our future on the planet."
2)"Memorial Day" – "It is a very important day in the U.S. and the U.K. When I was a child in England, it was observed as a very solemn day. Everyone would wear a red poppy in their lapel. It represented the blood of the fallen. But on Memorial Day, I don't want to only remember the combatants. There were also those who came out of the trenches as writers and poets, who started preaching peace, men and women who have made this world a kinder place to live. So it's the hippies, the poets and the spartans that I will remember on this Memorial Day."

New Historical Pink Floyd and Genesis Boxset (Via Neptune Pink Floyd)

After completely selling out of the second edition of the Bath and Knebworth Pink Floyd commemorative set in less than 12 weeks, www.rockmusicmemorabilia.com realised they had underestimated the demand for these sets.
There was also a great deal of interest in the 1978 Knebworth Genesis commemorative set by visitors to Neptune Pink Floyd, so Henrietta Bannister, the daughter of the promoter Freddy Bannister, decided to produce a combined Pink Floyd/Genesis Bath and Knebworth commemorative set, with an amazing discount of £44.99.

Raga Time

India has a history-of classical music -ragas
for every hour of every day-on which may be embroidered
improvised themes to embellish and extend themes, modes and styles
to grow from solid and secure cultural harmonic traditions
So it is with each of us-our 4/4 bloodbeat pulse orchestra
tunes up in womb and proceeds upon counted heartbeats
to become the metronome of our musical lives. We thrive via attunement/
alignment with "music of the spheres"was an Elizabethan concept
philosophically projecting perfection as circular orbits and Heavenly cadences
You hear "the mermaids singing each to each".You reach bliss through this
immersion in the waves of ocean sounds and waves of silences
Doppler beat(your art)-silver gold veins walk you in step with all that lives..
Life is a gift.Muse is what you give!

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
