Imagine the head of the columnist that I am! I am here to review the new album SPIRITS BURNING and I did not know this training, yet it is their fourteenth discography effort, the first dating from 1999 which intervened on a title someone who has done quite a way since, Mister Steven Wilson himself. It is also more of a conglomerate with variable geometry as a real group, the common twenty years is the captain, as he defines himself, Don FALCONE using as name a smoky fire "a Space Rock Collective".
The music played by SPIRITS BURNING has this special is that we seem to participate in a giant jam session to be polite or a merry mess to be a little less polite. Some songs actually have a nice color worthy of the blue oyster, others seem straight out of the most violent and bizarre albums of HAWKWIND, others still show such a patchwork of influences it is difficult to classify, there are in there my good lady of ethnicity, the space, psychedelic, pop music of the eighties and even shades of dance music ( "in the Future" the fourth title). For fans of the New York group, we will quote the first track "Hothouse Flowers" just for the introductory guitar riff (Donald Roeser?) but also for singing, the ninth "Seven Finger Solution" or the twelfth "Learning To Art". The fans of the London band PDC fifth "Doomed", the seventh "Any Particular Interest" (where Michael MOORCOCK plays harmonica) or even the fourteenth "Quest For Bromley." Note that the tenth part "To Steal A Space Traveler," which is also one of the two longest of the album could be an unlikely collision between the two above-named courses. The second disc for a fan of instrumental music, then it's more sensitivity to my voice and unfortunately often misused, so my preference goes to the second CD that contains the same songs in the same order but in versions without words and where there are much less complete mess of the first cD (see above), in a nutshell, it is much more digestible. In summary an album to listen with very large ears to fully appreciate.

The group 'Spirits Burning', which was founded in 1996 in San Francisco, quickly grew into an extensive music collective of about thirty members during the recording of that record, because there were all kinds of musicians from bands like 'Blue Öyster Cult', 'Hawkwind'. , 'The Damned', 'Camper Van Beethoven', 'The Dictators', etc. came along on the sixteen songs that have been given a place on this album.
The lyrics are therefore written by writer Michael Moorcock, who also provides backing vocals here and there, while the music for these songs was composed by Don Falcone and Albert Bouchard. The lead vocals in the song "Hothouse Flowers" is by guest vocalist Donald Roeser, while Richie Castellano from "Blue Öyster Cult" brings the song "Quest For Bromley" and his wife Ann Marie Castellano sings the song "Soirée Of Fire".
Jsun Atoms, the frontman of the formation 'The Upsidedown', sings "In The Future" and "Any Particular Interest", Don Fleming takes care of "Fall In Love", Andy Shernoff of 'The Dictators' sings "Dark Dominion ", While Joe Bouchard, ex-bassist of 'Blue Öyster Cult', provides the songs" Seven Finger Solution "and" To Steal A Space Traveler "with lead vocals.
The album is a succession of loud and dynamic rock songs with massive presence of guitars and hard rock adjacent vocals. For fans of this progressive rock genre, this record will certainly bring the necessary entertainment, but for our personal taste this album is unfortunately no bacon to our mouth.
