WHEN I LOST MY TALKING FRIEND
EYE WAS HOLLOW,HAUNTED,HUNTED
by the loss of a significant soul.We had years together,
always laughing@the joke of life.We never tired of talking/listening
to stories of Blackhawk,baseball,American Presidents like Taft and McKinley..
For he (as a child)had been hoisted onto the shoulders of his parents
to see the passing parade of Presidents address the people from the backs of trains..
My story-telling friend had Native American roots.He had traded with tribes in Mexico for Art.
He had never traded upon his Heritage."I was brought up white"he shared..
Poet,singer-songwriter,cartoonist,graphic illustrator-but it was as a friend and story teller
that his magic revealed its diamonds.Of course,he took time.Of course,we visited,
as he tried,but even canes and a walker and a borrowed wheelchair
could not make him mobile enough to move.So from his bed in home
he shared his Elksinger's Perfected Tarot.He thought that it was his crowning achievement.
It was his life and smile and attitude of joy that holds him in our hearts
And even we cannot forget.To learn.To remember.
