THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"

WATCHING A DOCUMENTARY ON VAUDEVILLE
a staged miracle during a Great Depression
which is no longer in evidence
even with millions unemployed
and many simply dying (most still elders)
it occurred to me=THIS ENTIRE CULTURE IS GONE!
Same revelation when watching the newly colorized GREAT WAR
Every single person in every frame has passed from us
Now i do not know if this will be a GREAT PANDEMIC
nor if the casualty lists will topple TWO WORLD WARS
or the economics beat THE GREAT DEPRESSION
But shards of that culture still lodge in my brain
Stories of Depression glassware @auction
Newspaper wallpaper and stuffed in holey shoes
None of us aware of how GREAT PUBLIC WORKS
solved both poverty and despair.Songs of that time were cheerful and bright.
Musicals prospered.Soup kitchens and community co-operation
When one's private world is tyranny, remind oneself of the transitory-
how Mussolini died, and Hitler-even when their Fascism and Nazism
resurrected in the households of our time. This is why statues must change,
and accountability for personal and collective violence becomes a theme for 2020.
Even when we know-the children of our times-may not have seen any of these-documentaries

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
