BELGIAN BEEFHEART REVIEW

Gonzo Multimedia label starts to get in the habit of repeating old concerts Captain Beefheart . This is a very valuable habit and should be declared a public utility but with one reservation  : avoid falling on his disastrous recordings.

Still traumatized by the painful listening to Live from Harpo's 1980 " , which revealed nothing more than a show (interesting) handicapped by a disastrous outcome of the sound recording of the concert at the bottom of the room with a dictaphone occasion, I opened one eye suspicious that "Live from Paris 1977" , from the same label that had dared to repeat the "Live from Harpo's" .

At what inaudible brouhaha will we have right here?Anguish when headphones surrounds the ears and the finger presses the start button. The suspense is unbearable, how will sound good Captain on this show captured the new Hippodrome de Paris November 19, 1977?

Upon reflection, we can conclude that, even if it is not perfectly sound great, it is still faced with a much better result than the"Live from Harpo's" . Here I am reassured and ready to deliver some additional information on the circumstances of this concert. In 1977, Captain Beeheart is a little stand-by discography perspective. He released two albums in 1972 ( "The spotlight kid"and "Clear Spot" ), and two in 1974 ( "Unconditionnally guaranteed" and "Bluejeans and Moonbeams" and he returned to the studio in 1978 with "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) " .

In 1975, seen alongside his faithful comrade Frank Zappa on the live album"Bongo Fury" , and that's pretty much everything, except for a few concerts in the United States in the summer and a more substantial European tour in autumn, when Captain Beefheart plays including the Hippodrome de Pantin in Paris, Oct. 18, at the instigation of Trotskyist party, which organizes the Red Party. This event seems to have interested the Captain SINCE he returned to France two years later, November 19, 1977, to participate in this new festival organized by the
 far left.

This passage at the Hippodrome de Pantin is also the only time in Europe for 1976 and 1977, made the honor Trotskyists, who wacky and avant-garde Captain was getting along. For the record, Gong and Buffy Sainte-Marie were also produced during this festival. The French Captain Beefheart concert is all the more interesting it will be one of the last run in Europe, except for a few latest tour dates in November 1980.

The concert of the Hippodrome de Pantin retrieves and Captain Beefheart his Magic Band, composed for the occasion by Denny Walley (guitar), Eric Drew Feldman (bass and keyboards),Jeff Morris Tepper (guitar), Robert Williams (drums and percussion) and Harry Duncan (harmonica), which is other than the manager of the Captain. Side set list, this double CD anthology presents a wide repertoire of Captain Beefheart. Apart from the albums "Strictly personal" , "Unconditionnally guaranteed" and "Bluejeans and Moonbeams" , the rest of the discography has its representatives. Debut album "Safe as Milk" 1967 (with "Abba Zaba" and "Electricity" ) to "Bat Chain Puller" ( "Bat Chain Puller" , "Floppy Boot Stomp" , "Suction prints" ) and even the "Doc At the Radar Station" which will be published in 1980 ( "A carrot is as close as a rabbit gets to a diamond" ), most of Captain Beefheart is played here, including of course the classic titles and confusing "Trout Mask Replica" , Dadaist masterpiece of 1969.

It feels a Captain Beefheart happy to be on stage, facing the cries and screams of a crowd sometimes wild. Sound, but not miraculous, yet enjoys a good balance to distinguish all the instruments and the cacophony inevitable on some tracks of Captain Beefheart, is wanted, what distinguishes the genius of mediocrity. While still Gonzo Multimedia fetched a live that you can listen to in full on YouTube. But licensed Captain Beefheart fans will still take satisfaction from the possession of this recording on CD. With a little effort, Gonzo Multimedia probably succeed to put in the miles with bootlegs of Beefheart, namely live in Amsterdam in 1980 or that of Kansas City in 1974.

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
