CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: Cheap Transcription Disks

It's surprising how prices can vary, on BBC Transcription Disks.

I've seen a Hawkwind one sell for over £1000 on eBay before (US$1500), but Pink Floyd ones can sometimes be picked up for the cost of a round of beers in a pub.

Presumably, supply and demand plays its part here, just as in the price of any commodity from coffee beans to jumbo jets.

Pink Floyd has a bigger fan base than does Hawkwind, but the band's inactive whereas Hawkwind's been continually going for over 40 years... except for a short break early in 1978, that is.

Of course, it helps if the item is genuinely old and rare, and the above label is a bit suspicious. "Vintage Pink Floyd"?  Back in the days when Transcription Disks were routinely in use to convey material between radio stations, Pink Floyd weren't a vintage band - they were a fairly new band!

Hmmm. Caveat Emptor.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
