"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?
HOW OLD ARE YOU? (KNGWARREYE)
CATHEDRA.EXULTATION vs
MALEVICH.KANDINSKY.MONDRIAN
All art has a
context.Aboriginal art/ initiation and ceremony.
Stories in sand ,on
bark,in ocher on walls of cave
were local and tribal and
meant to initiate ."Here is your billabong.
"Here is where roots and
yams are plentiful."Here your kanguru"
Such stories were not
translated into paint on canvas for sale until 1970.
50,000 years of desert
dreamings were overpainted on cave walls,
or kicked away from sand
teachings(just like Buddhist sand yantras)
We FEEL but do not
know, why Aboriginal art moves us so.
Even they were at first
painting in a descriptive (Western)way
in order to sell trinkets
to tourists(like boomerangs MADE IN CHINA)
Traditional context was
updated when Kngwarreye and new "painters"
adopted Western modes of
preservation and communication
while preserving a form of
storytelling.Secrets of landscape/fauna
alluded to,but no "secret
"knowledge imparted. We love but do not know.
We do not know the
Dreaming-the desert lizard ,the bush hen.
We do not have to know
them to survive. But we intuit what we have all lost.
And what we have
gained.
