Album Format Plays to Yes’ Strengths

Yes has taken the trend of bands playing entire albums in concert and perfected it. After playing three of their albums in full on last year’s tour, the prog-rock giants performed 1971’s Fragile and 1972’s Close to the Edge this time around, sandwiched around two tracks from their 2014 release Heaven & Earth. Starting with Close to the Edge, which was played in reverse order, guitarist Steve Howe showed he was in top form, closing “Siberian Khatru” with a blistering jazz-tinged solo, then following with the gentle acoustic intro to “And You and I,” on which he played three different guitars.

Some longtime fans still lament the 2008 dismissal of original vocalist Jon Anderson, but current singer Jon Davison, now in his third year with Yes, has firmly established himself as the band’s frontman. Not only a major contributor to the new material, Davison also asserted himself on the classic tracks, with a confident delivery and a powerful angelic voice that breathed fresh life into each song.

Michael Des Barres, Linda Perry, Sara Gilbert Spoof TV Talent Shows in 'American't Idol'

.
Linda Perry, whose reality show about the artistic process, Make or Break: The Linda Perry Project, is currently running on VH1, has been very vocal about her disdain for more traditional TV talent competitions like American Idol and The Voice. Recently, whenspeaking to Yahoo Music's Reality Rocks, she said: "American Idol is a machine. It's American Marketing. As for The Voice, every time the chair spins, I'm sure they hear 'cha-ching.' Because that's not about music at all, either."
In that same interview, Linda claimed if she were "allowed to take over" American Idol, she "could give them a show that they couldn't believe. It would be massive. It would be huge. It would be bigger than what they are doing now. Because it would be real, and it would be honest. And everybody would stay tuned."

Being Sunday I always post sacred music. The name of the deity may change, or even the deity Him/Herself but the spirit remains the same

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)

FOR A LONG TIME, A WALL
We each come to one.Stop.Wait .Hesitate.
Some will draw a wall and turn it to a flower
One or two will try interpretative dance
More will film the wall, seeking to melt it into moving images
I will write poems in the empty air about walls
and how they are as temporary as time itself.
Pain is a wall.Dis-ease.Limits.Fear.Anger
I have seen those who use their anger as a fire
to scorch the countryside with their flaming critiques
Dragons still exist,as well as salamanders
Whatever myth you project need protect you.
Icons,mantras,affirmations,prayers,petitions call

All of them more art upon the wall...

PEACE STILL CALLING!
WOODSTOCK RESPONDING!
Sharing one earth means sharing one's water/air/home/land
And then the walls must fall/so we can all call to each other
and actually hear each other. No need for posthumous Paradises
when we are living and as alive as every element we deny.
Sacred sites evoke collective memories that call us deeply
We remember images/emotions succinctly
We think of water as a mother/land as brother/nothing as other
We are all in this together..Come and be the future!

Guitar legend Gordon Giltrap heads back to city

Gordon Giltrap

Acoustic guitar legend Gordon Giltrap is returning to Preston for Second Intimate Gig.
He will be in the city on October 25 for his second sold-out show at St Joseph’s Parish Hall after playing in the hall last June.

He was originally invited to play in the city by local resident Francis Lawson and his friend Brendan Cook.

Francis and Brendan, who go by Fran and Bren, became Giltrap fans after the release of his album Visionary in 1976. Years ago, after they met at one of his concerts.

Giltrap extended an invitation to play in Preston if they ever rented a venue.

And he kept his promise last summer when he made his way to Preston to perform for a small crowd of around 100 local fans.

Giltrap began his career more than 45 years ago and has released more than 30 albums over the years.

With his own personal style, he’s perfected his sound and played with the likes of Brian May, Rick Wakeman and the London Symphony Orchestra.

His range crosses the genres of folk, blues, pop, classical and rock.

John Mayall, the master of the blues, is back on the road — and heading straight for Torquay

HE MAY be a pensioner but John Mayall shows no sign of letting up. With more than 60 studio and live albums under his belt, the legendary musician is going back on the road.

The musician, known to many as the master of blues, will be playing the Princess Theatre, Torquay, on October 24.

The 80 year old now lives across the pond. He has no regrets about moving to sunnier climes in California.

"I don't really miss England and still get to come over," he said.

John Mayall's place in music history became apparent when he put together the first of his bands, the Bluesbreakers in 1963.

As the artist who provides the link between Cream, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones, Manchester-born Mayall would go on to become the godfather of British blues, a title that will forever be hard to challenge.

His role as front man and mentor has shaped and influenced modern music history in a multitude of ways.

"Being a front man is just part of being in a band, it goes with the job," he said in a matter of fact way...

GINGER BAKER: Why?

Why?

Motema Music

There might not have been a more shocking moment in a rock documentary upon recent recollection than seeing Ginger Baker straight up punch music journalist Jay Bulger in the face during a pivotal moment of the award-winning 2012 doc Beware of Mr. Baker.

Yet for as mean as the British rock icon is in private at 70 years young, he is a master of channeling that internal viscera behind the drum kit to craft some of the most adventurous rhythms of the last half-century, be it as a member of the Graham Bond Organisation, Cream, Air Force or Masters of Reality.

But if you were to take one recording that truly defines the heart of this English icon’s love for his craft, look no further than his essential 1970 collaboration with African funk legend Fela Kuti,Fela Ransome Kuti and Africa 70 with Ginger Baker Live. If you haven’t heard it, you need to hunt it down straightaway. This is the album that will serve as the primary reference point to help you appreciate his excellent new LP with his current ensemble Jazz Confusion.

‘Oh, my God – talk about a redirection’: Micky Dolenz on his most interesting post-Monkees job offer

During the periods in which Micky Dolenz wasn’t making a career with the Monkees, he’s typically busied himself with television production, film acting and stage work. That is, until a certain, very unlikely Rock and Roll Hall of Famer asked him to join his band.
“I get a call from Frank Zappa one day,” Dolenz tells Kevin Pollak. He said: “Micky, I just wondered — I know the Monkees show went off the air, and I’d like for you to be the drummer for the Mothers of Invention.”
All of this took place, Dolenz says, “about a year after” the Monkees TV program ended in 1968— “or maybe less even.” That would have been around the time the original Mothers lineup, featuring Jimmy Carl Black on drums, initially split.

CHRIS SQUIRE: “Next Year, We Might Consider Doing Something with JON ANDERSON”

Chris Squire

The brand new Yes album titled Heaven & Earth dropped out on July 21st in UK and July 22nd in USA, and we have already wrote about it here.
For many years now, fans have been shouting on the social networks that if “no Jon Anderson, no Yes.” Anderson left Yes for the third time in 2004. It’s been said on numerous occasions that reunion between Jon Anderson and Yes is possible in the future.
In an interview for the French website Music Waves in May 2014, asked about his and the band’s connection with the former singer, bassist Chris Squire said: “Next year, we might consider doing something with Jon Anderson! I do not know yet but yes, it’s possible!
In November 2013, in an interview for Miami NewTimes, Jon Anderson was asked to express his opinion on fans’  statements that Yes is not “real” without him and his distinctive voice. He commented:

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
