MIMI PAGE: The Krypton Factor

The other day we posted a new track by Mimi Page, guesting on a song by Clark Kent. Today Clark explains how they started working together:
"I first found out about Mimi Page on a Greyhound a little over a year ago, through Minnesota's massive remix of "A Bad Place". She continued to impress me with her two songs with Bassnectar, and of course all of her solo projects. Working with her has been a goal of mine for quite some time, and she was an absolute pleasure to work with. Really quite happy with what we made, I hope you guys enjoy it!"

Special guest stars Brit Morgan of HBO’s “True Blood” (left center) and singer/songwriter Mimi Page (right center) join the lockdown investigation.

Actress Brit Morgan (“True Blood”) and singer/songwriter Mimi Page guest star on this week’s episode of “Ghost Adventures,” airing at 8 p.m. Friday, March 29, on Travel Channel.
A summary of the episode, provided by Travel Channel, is as follows:
The “Ghost Adventures” crew — Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin — is back to investigate the scariest, most notorious, haunted places in the world. The trio interviews eyewitnesses and historians at each location, arming themselves with the stories of the ghosts they later confront during their dusk-to-dawn lockdowns. Then they review and analyze their findings with some of the most-respected experts and specialists in the paranormal field.
Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin travel west to the former mining town of The Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula, CA, home to many ghostly reports including some very raucous spirits who may have committed murder.  The guys hope to investigate this bizarre incident by conducting a Tarot card reading and séance in the hotel.  Special guests Brit Morgan from HBO’s “True Blood” (Debbie Pelt) and singer/song writer Mimi Page join the team for the lockdown.

EXCITING NEWS FROM MIMI PAGE

Photo: Today our cat passed away. RIP Osso :-( He loved listening to me play piano growing up.The late great Douglas Adams once said that the invention of time travel changed the human language. Although I haven't invented time travel (despite the fact that last night in Southampton was 1968 all round) I know precisely what he meant. For example, the day before yesterday, Mimi Page sent me this talking about tomorrow (which was yesterday) and now it is the day after, which isn't tomorrow, but today. Confused? Hell yes. But the track in question is eminently groovy...

Hey guys! Some exciting music news:

My 2nd collaboration with Bassnectar and DC Breaks called "Breathless" drops tomorrow 10/16 on Bassnectar's new album "Freestyle". Bassnectar played the ACL festival this weekend and was interviewed by the magazine The Examiner, who gave me a little shout out. Pretty cool! Great article on Lorin and electronic music too.

"The epic ACL set presaged the talented musician’s soon to be released “Freestyle” EP, set to drop on Oct. 16. The new record comes on the heels of his latest successful full-length album “Vava Voom,” which peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes Electronic Albums Chart (No. 9 overall) and featured some incredibly diverse hip hop collaborations with Lupe Fiasco and Amp Live, as well as ethereal vocals from Mimi Page and a tribute to California Skate-punk legends Pennywise."

Here is "Breathless" from his upcoming album. He leaked it on youtube 3 days ago and it already has 20,000 views. Butterfly (my first collaboration with Bassnectar released in April) has accumulated over a million views on youtube and will be soundtracking an upcoming feature film.

LATEST UPDATE:

BASSNECTAR WRITES: Ahhh! Bassnectar's #Freestyle EP is #1 on iTunes electro charts and #25 overall! "Breathless" is #22! I feel so blessed to have worked with such incredible artists, congrats Bassnectar and DC Breaks, Angel Haze, Seth Drake and everyone involved on this record!

His top 5 (We’re in good company)

MIMI PAGE: A forthcoming show, with Peter Savillesque artwork

I don't know what it is about this artwork which I pinched quite unashamedly from her Facebook page, but there is something elegantly Joy Divisionesque about it/

I have always been a fan of Peter Saville's artwork, and there is something about this flyer which is irresistibly reminescent (to me anyway) of the cover for Closer.

Whatdyathink?

MIMI PAGE WROTE TO ME LAST NIGHT...

After 8 months of endless work, here it is! Directed and edited by John Beck Hofmann

(Side note: John Beck Hofmann is the videographer and cinematographer for NASA/JPL and directed the viral hit "7 Minutes of Terror" Mars Rover landing video last month which was millions of views on youtube. He's recently been featured on all major television networks.)

For those of you who had forgotten, I spoke to Mimi months ago about the video:

Jon: I have seen some stills from your ‘Black Valentine’ video and you’re standing on top of a castle looking very gothic. So tell me about the video, what’s the story? I want to know how come the girl who sings ‘The Starving Artist’ ends up standing on top of a castle looking gothic. It’s just a bit far out for me. I just want to see how it works.

Mimi: Well, like I said every one of my songs has a life of its own, and ‘Black Valentine’ probably is my second favourite on the album if not maybe my favourite....it depends on my mood really, but ‘Black Valentine’ is about the darkness that lives in all of us.

You know, all of us I feel are a balance between light and dark, and that kind of struggle within, biblically and everywhere, you know from the beginning of time, like light and dark are equal.

‘Black Valentine’, it’s kind of like, it’s the video’s struggle that darkness that takes over me and me fighting it off and, I don’t know, it’s ... I wrote the song in my apartment, but in my mind I had an alternate reality and it’s like, you know, this girl, the story of this girl who lives in this castle and has this huge kind of Edward Scissorhands-like studio with keyboards, and synthesisers and knobs. As you’ll see in the video, it’s this huge room of equipment where I’m creating the noises and the sounds , and it’s very industrial sounding. And then, like she writes it and then she goes and she’s fighting off the darkness. It’s like a whole battle so you kinda just see within her mind what’s going on and you don’t really know where she is exactly, you just see she is in this castle and she’s creating all these noises and stuff, and what’s going on.

LOOK WHAT I FOUND ON MIMI PAGE'S WEBSITE

Kudos to Warren Huart, the legendary record producer responsible for some of Mimi's most memorable recordings...

MIMI PAGE: Look what I found on Soundcloud

Mimi Page is an eclectic singer/songwriter and producer. Her unique style blends ethereal dreamy soundscapes with melodic, thought provoking vocals and has been compared to the likes of Portishead, Enya and Fiona Apple. After self-releasing several EPs, her single “This Fire” went viral after debuting on MTV’s The Real World charting #1 on Amazon.com and #11 on iTunes’ electronic charts. Mimi has also collaborated with and been remixed by some of the top producers in electronic music including Bassnectar, Bare, Phrenik, Minnesota, Omega, Skytree and Shotgun Radio. Mimi is actively scoring independent films along with licensing original songs to film and television. Her debut full length album “Breathe Me In” featuring co-producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Aerosmith) released February 14th on UK label Hunter Records.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
