Chris Squire talks Yes albums tour, in Phoenix

Yes
Yes will perform three albums, playing songs in the order they were on the original vinyl July 9, 2013, at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Yes band members from left: Guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Geoff Downes, vocalist Jon Davison, drummer Alan White and bassist Chris Squire.

Progressive-rock legends Yes will be blowing the dust off three of their most revered albums in Phoenix, revisiting 1971’s “The Yes Album,” 1972’s “Close to the Edge” and 1977’s “Going for the One” in their entirety over the course of one two-hour show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

The latest edition of Yes includes bassist/founding member Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and new singer Jon Davison.

Jon Anderson, who sang on all three albums, last performed with Yes in 2004. He was supposed to join them in 2008, but the tour was canceled when Anderson suffered acute respiratory failure.

We caught up with Squire, who’s lived in Chandler since 2008, to talk about the tour.

Question: Could you talk about the inspiration for this tour?

Answer: We’ve had this idea in our back pocket for some time, to do a tour where we play the albums in their entirety in the sequence in which they appeared on the original vinyl. But normally, when we go on the road, there’s a new product to promote. So that takes precedence. But this year, we don’t have a new album, so we thought, well, this would be a good time.

Q: Have you been to shows where bands have done this?

A: I remember being in New York in the ’90s, I think, or the early 2000s, and Steely Dan had this concept. Maybe that’s where I originally got the idea. Other bands have done this. It’s not a new idea on our part. But it’s a new idea for us.

Q: Why these three albums?

A: They mark stepping stones in our career. “The Yes Album,” of course, was the album that put Yes’ name on the worldwide stage. And then, “Close to the Edge” is the album where we first attempted to do the extra-long-form piece of music, having one song taking up the whole side of a piece of vinyl. So that’s another landmark. And then “Going for the One” was the first time Yes had ever recorded outside of the U.K. We actually went to Switzerland. We usually play “Close to the Edge” first, then “Going For the One” with “The Yes Album” third.

NEW BAND FOR GEOFF DOWNES (no relation)

DECKCHAIR POETS - Who Needs PyjamasDECKCHAIR POETS -
Who Needs Pyjamas
Never the one to slow down, Geoff Downes, formed new band – all without severing his obligations with YES and ASIA – with kindred spirits Nick D’Virgilio, a drummer mostly known for his work with SPOCK’S BEARD, and singer Lynden Williams of JERUSALEM, whose only album, produced by Ian Gillan, is a cult classic. This new band is called DECKCHAIR POETS, and their debut, “Who Needs Pyjamas”, is out on Angel Air on October 7th.
Says Williams, “It was obvious from the fun nature of ‘Pyjamas’ songs that they could not be released under the JERUSALEM banner and a new name was needed. Geoff and I considered, at our time of life we should be sitting on a beach somewhere reciting amusing limericks and thus the name appeared”.

Yes, prog-rock of the Seventies is back, says Rick Wakeman

Clubbers who have made "Get Lucky" this summer's dance-floor anthem will be shocked to hear that Daft Punk aren't the robot-friendly sound of the future – but revivalists of Seventies progressive rock, once the most derided of genres.

Prog, a bombastic mutation of rock and classical genres typically performed by highly skilled musicians in outrageous capes, could once be heard echoing from student halls and stadiums across the land.

Supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer sold 40 million copies of their symphonic rock while Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes and Rush became prog's most commercially savvy flag-bearers.

In the end it was punk that swept away those highly designed concept albums with their epic or medieval themes and ostentatious, lengthy, and, some would say, self-indulgent displays of musical proficiency.
But now prog is back, freed from rock's closet of shame, and claiming such favourites as Radiohead, Elbow and Muse as acolytes. A new wave of bands, such as Scottish electro-prog explorers North Atlantic Oscillation, is also finding favour.

Meanwhile, Rick Wakeman, keyboardist with Yes, is about to capitalise on the revival with a new multimedia touring version of his 1974 landmark solo album, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Wakeman says Daft Punk, the French techno duo responsible for the million-selling single "Get Lucky", are as prog as they come. Inspired by Pink Floyd's album Dark Side of the Moon, the band employed live musicians on vintage synthesisers for their album Random Access Memories, which included one nine-minute song.

"They are going back to the prog ethos that there are no rules, no one is going to stop you experimenting. You aren't restricted to the three-minute single any more," said Wakeman. "That goes back to the early days of prog.

DAYS BETWEEN STATIONS WITH: Peter Banks, Rick Wakeman, Billy Sherwood and Tony Levin

Today Sepand Samzadeh of Days Between Stations tells us about the song "Eggshell Man" from their brand new album "Extremis". Here is the story:

This is a track featuring the late Peter Banks, Rick Wakeman, Billy Sherwood and Tony Levin, and is the seventh track in our concept album 'In Extremis'. The concept being, the story of a man at the point of death (the Latin definition of 'In Extremis') with his memories whirling around him. The album, in not so chronological order, follows the story of this man, and by the time Eggshell Man appears, the protagonists empire has crumbled. As much he tries to persevere, he keeps falling down. The title comes from the neurotic obsession Oscar and I had developed, by this time, to finish the album… my wife kept saying she was walking on eggshells around us. It is also loosely based off of the Humpty Dumpty fable, which Paul Whitehead depicted in his own fashion in the album artwork.

As the guitarist for Days Between Stations, I wanted to record an acoustic guitar track for the first time. In addition, I was excited to play a Persian lute, named a Tar, on this song. This instrument was part of my many influences growing up and I had always dreamed of introducing it as a Rock worthy instrument to a Western audience. The Persians use this instrument in the classical genre of their music, namely Sonati. Ali Nouri lent his talent on the tar solo on this track, and we really had a great deal of fun recording this with him. The song really fell into place organically.

Ask YES – Friday 14th June 2013 – Geoff Downes

John Wright
Have you heard from or worked with Trevor Horn lately?

I’ve worked with Trevor fairly extensively over the past few years, not just on Fly From Here, but also on some Buggles-related and The Producers shows and recordings. It’s always an inspiration to work with one of the world’s greatest record producers, and Trevor and myself have always seemed to have a great understanding and empathy together in the studio.
Michael Wright
Love you in Yes and Asia. Any chance of a Buggles reunion and some new music?

Thanks. Well you never know! Trevor’s a really busy guy most of the time with his wide variety of projects and productions, but I don’t think we’d ever discount the possibility. It’s always a challenge working on new stuff, and I’d love to collaborate with Trevor again. As you know, I’m pretty busy myself right now working on new material with both Yes and Asia, as well as several other projects. So yeah, it’s not impossibility, just a matter of making the planets align so that one day we can hopefully make it happen.
Robert Koehl
Since you previously worked with Al Pitrelli (musical director and lead guitarist of Trans Siberian Orchestra‘s West Coast touring band) on two Asia albums, any chance you’ll be one of the special guest stars during a future TSO Christmas tour?

Al’s a very tasteful all-round guitarist. Even though he can do all the ‘shredding’ bit with ease, he also manages to come up with melodic, hooky solos in that genre. Whilst I’ve not worked with him for some years, I don’t think it would be problem collaborating with him again. It would be fun to do, but hey, there are only 52 weeks in the year!

‘We still have a good rapport’: Geoff Downes is friendly with Steve Howe, despite exit from Asia

When Steve Howe quit Asia, he was only leaving one of the two band lineups that he shares with Geoff Downes. The pair continues forward in the current edition of Yes — and Downes says there’ve been no hard feelings.
“We still have a good rapport with each other,” Downes tells Eric Blair in the video below.
Howe co-founded Asia with Downes, John Wetton and Carl Palmer, eventually appearing on five of the group’s studio albums — including its blockbuster 1982 debut and — after a long hiatus, then a 2006 reunion — on last year’s well-received anniversary recording XXX.
Howe was replaced by the 26-year-old Sam Coulson, in an announcement made later the same day.

CHRIS SQUIRE: For Bass Players Only

Chris SquireGlenn Gottlieb

Chris Squire

Exclusive Interview with FBPO’s Jon Liebman
June 3, 2013

Chris Squire is the founder and bass player for the British supergroup Yes.
FBPO: It was great meeting you at Bass Player Live! last year and hearing so many great stories. I know our followers would be very interested in hearing a little bit about the early days before we work up to today. Would that be all right with you?
CS: Sure!
FBPO: Okay, then why don’t we start from the beginning? How would you describe your musical upbringing?
CS: That was mainly in the Church of England, at my local church, where I was in the choir. I got very good musical training there because we had a very good choirmaster. He was very enthusiastic about music and he was young, so he made it really interesting for me and the other guys in the choir. By the time I became 15 and the Beatles broke, that shifted my reality from that kind of music to another kind of music! That’s when my rock & roll education started.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
