LINK: Chris Thompson interview

Chris Thompson's majestic and soulful vocals have been entertaining classic rock fans now for almost four decades, and thankfully he's showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Chris' rise to worldwide prominence began in the mid 70's when he took over the front man duties for Manfred Mann's Earth Band, a gig which he held off and on well into the 90's. While primarily known as the voice behind the signature Earth Band classics "Blinded By The Light", "Davey's On The Road Again" and "Runner", to name just a few, Chris has been diligently carving out his own identity as a solo artist in the years following his departure from the band. In fact he's assembled quite a formidable band of his own, which includes his close collaborator, Norwegian guitar wizard Mads Eriksen.

These days the British born, New Zealand raised Thompson makes his home in Belgium and continues to tour Europe with his band, performing his own material right alongside a wide variety of material that he helped make famous from the Earth Band's back catalogue. His latest release is a fantastic new CD / DVD package that combines a live radio concert along with a show that was filmed in Aschaffenburg Germany. However, the concert film was not without its problems, as technical difficulties meant that much of the material had to be scrapped. Undaunted Chris decided to release the show and along with the radio concert, which is featured on the CD portion, together makes one hell of a great package for his fans.

Ryan: This is a fantastic new DVD / CD collection that you've just released. The DVD portion of the package was filmed in Aschaffenburg Germany, and I know that things didn't go originally as planned, as you weren't able to present the whole concert due to technical issues. What's interesting though is that rather than scrap the whole project, you decided to release the material that was salvageable. Great idea, but can you tell me why you decided to do this?

Chris: Well like I said in the liner notes, I think anyone else would have given up. Everybody had put so much effort into it that I thought it would be just stupid to let it die without any of it seeing the light of day. As there were seven tracks that were in order, I thought I might as well just do that, but we came up with lots of different plans to include videos and other bits. It just came to the point where once we'd done the live CD in Berlin and we'd gotten permission to use that, I thought that we just needed to give everybody a taste of what we do video wise, and then we'll just do something like that again in the near future. So that's the real reason behind it. Then the other part of it is we played in Dexheim, and I had a look at that stuff and thought that it kind of had the hits on it, so I thought that it made sense to do something at least.

CHRIS THOMPSON REVIEW

Chris Thompson is an English vocalist/musicians that was raised in New Zealand and became mostly know through Manfred Mann’s Earthband when he succeeded Mick Rogers in 1976. Chris also released several solo albums, especially during the 80s and participated in other well-known musician works such as: Gary Moore, Elton John, John Parr, John Farnham, Mike Oldfield, Alan Parsons, Bonnie Tyler, Steve Hackett & Steelhouse Lane among others.

This new work is a double CD plus a bonus DVD from a live radio concert (Radio Berlin) and a previous rehearsal and concert that took place in Aschaffenburg at the Colos-Saal. The Berlin radio concert is just as it came from the radio transmission and such is the complete concert: as fans heard it on the radio. I hadn’t heard it at the time it was on but the quality, the performances and the band’s attitude is vibrant generally. There are plenty of songs to hear (mostly) from the Manfred Mann’s Earthband era as well as a few others from his solo albums, including the hit “You’re the Voice” which he had also co-written and was firstly presented by the Australian vocalist John Farnham. The live show is as enjoyable as it can be, it has a very good sound in general and will give a clue to all those who weren’t able to listen to it on the radio back in the day.

The DVD contains only 7 tracks from the Colos-Saal and 4 with special guests Dexheim (FanCam). The whole concert was bound to be released, but due to a major problem with the digital sound of the recording only 7 songs were usable in the end. Moreover, a discovered problem with the moving camera made that camera's material unusable. The guys did their best to save what they could from this concert. They also left the interviews they had done before the show just to give a hint of what was lost in terms of songs & enthusiasm. Chris is backed by a full band which includes Mads Eriksen on guitar, Gunnar Bjelland on keys, Frank Hovland on bass with Szolt Meszaros on drums for the Berlin concert and Steinar Krokstad on drums & Dirk Naessens on violin on the Aschaffenburg Remains - Live at the Colos-Saal - material.

Overall, this 2CD plus DVD package is actually very good and I’m sure the guys that attended the show that night should have it on their collection. As for the others… if you do like Chris Thompson & Manfred Mann’s Earthband then there’s no way not to revel in this very beautiful release.

CHRIS THOMPSON: Polish review

http://www.mlwz.ceti.pl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8555&Itemid=26

Thompson, Chris - Berlin Live & Live At The Colos-Saal
Author: Arthur Chachlowski
13/06/2012.

Chris Thompson? Who is he? The less oriented to say that for sure you have heard his voice many times, even listening to the radio and zaśpiewanego his timeless hit "Blinded By The Light" Manfred Mann's group Earthband. Not only does this hit has made it his "two cents". "Spirits In The Night", "Mighty Quinn", "You Angel You", "Do not Kill It Carol" and "Davy's On The Road" - this is only the first bank of the examples provided by the Mannfreda Mann and a team of great hits. Chris has worked with this audience as from released in 1976, the famous album "Roaring Silence", and then, already in the 80s, he headed his own group, Night.

It should also know that our hero took to the famous album Jeff Wayne's "War Of The Worlds", where he sang a song (a big hit on the lists in the UK in 1978) Pt. "Thunder Child".
Now, Chris Thompson recalls a concert release titled "Berlin Live & Live At The Colos-Saal." It's bloated tomiszcze, which consists of two CDs and a DVD disc, is a fantastic concert review of his work and still przeogromnych possible stage. The main part of the material contained on this album is Thompson's performance, accompanied by a team in the Berlin Radio 88.8FM June 4, 2011 year. The two silver discs CD is a complete record of the two-hour concert presented reportedly on a scale of 1:1, with no overtime and additions. Listen to this great. Repertoire, performance, live audience's reaction - it all adds up to a really great musical feast, which we can experience hearing these great songs performed. 12-minute version of "Blinded By The Light" simply crushes. Games played as an encore, "For You" and "Questions" are harming. But earlier, before them, we have a real festival of the best songs from the rich repertoire of Thompson and Mann's Earthband Mannfred.

Complementing this radio show is a visual record of the concert pieces in January 2011 in the Colos-Saal in Aschaffenburg.Unfortunately, technical problems prevented the documentation of this performance as a whole. On the DVD so we get only 7 songs "rescued" by technicians treatments (such as "Do not Kill It Carol", "Martha's Madman" and "Whole Lot To Give"), plus a few recordings registered by the fans, plus interviews with Thompson and members of his team, which was provided just before the show in Aschaffenburg.

What else can I say about this release? Just because I recommend it with all my heart - that's for sure. And properly so, because the rest is music. Thompson's music and voice speak for themselves. Speak for themselves. Arms without any error. Probably because we are dealing with the professionalism of the highest quality. Let us at the end of the names of the musicians who accompanied this great singer's concert in the implementation of the project. The Mads Eriksen plays guitars, keyboards Gunnar Bjelland, Frank Hovland on bass, and drums Zsolt Meszaros (in the Berlin radio) and Steinar Krokstad (in Aschaffenburg).
Once again I recommend. Album-cudeńko.

Manfred Mann's Earthband Vocal Legend Chris Thompson Releases Vintage Concert Live In Berlin On CD & DVD

Featuring the hits "Blinded By The Light", "Spirits In The Night", "The Mighty Quinn" and more!!!

5/10/2012 - London, UK - You've heard his voice on such classic Manfred Mann's Earthband hits as "Blinded By The Light" "Spirits In The Night", "The Mighty Quinn" and many others, a staple of FM radio for the past 40 years, legendary vocalist Chris Thompson has released a vintage live solo concert from Berlin, Germany. Available as a 2CD and bonus DVD package, Chris Thompson 'Live In Berlin' features all the Manfred Mann's Earthband hits you have loved for the past four decades, along with many beloved solo songs.

Chris Thompson has had a long and varied career in the music business. Born in the United Kingdom but raised in New Zealand Chris first experienced local success with bands in New Zealand before relocating to the UK in 1973. Chris’s first big break came when he replaced Mick Rogers in Manfred Mann’s Earthband. His debut with the band was on the 'Roaring Silence' album which contained the worldwide number 1 hit single "Blinded By The Light". Following that single the band re recorded another Bruce Springsteen song "Spirits In The Night" which had featured on the bands previous album 'Nightingales and Bombers'.

Whilst with Manfred Mann’s Earthband Chris also featured on Jeff Wayne’s concept album 'War of the Worlds' recording the track “Thunder Child” which was also a UK hit single. (Chris would regularly perform the song live in the concert presentation of the 'War of The Worlds' album). He also enjoyed massive worldwide success with Manfred Mann’s Earthband recording the albums 'Watch' and 'Angel Station' and hit singles "Davy’s On The Road Again", "Mighty Quinn", "Don’t Kill It Carol" and "You Angel You" before deciding to leave the Earthband to concentrate on his solo career by way of the band Night which Chris led for two albums.

Following his time with Night, Chris returned to the Earthband but also continued to record solo albums. More recently Chris has been performing concerts with the Mads Eriksen Band where the band perform both new material from Chris alongside other songs Chris is rightly famous for from the Earthband catalogue. To date the band has filmed two live DVDs and live albums for release.

This live 2CD and bonus DVD package is a mixture of a live radio concert and a previous rehearsal and concert that took place in Aschaffenburg. The Aschaffenburg material was salvaged from a full concert film and recording and is included as a bonus as it was felt that the material contained in the salvaged footage conveyed the excitement of the concert. The Berlin concert is just as it came from the radio transmission and as such is the complete concert as fans heard it at the concert and also on the radio

Chris is backed by a full band which includes Mads Eriksen, Gunnar Bjelland, and Frank Hovland with Szolt Meszaros on drums for the Berlin concert and Steinar Krokstad drumming on the Aschaffenburg material.

Chris Thompson’s profile as an artist is currently high due to extensive touring and also as a result of his previous work with Manfred Mann’s Earthband and also as a solo artist and as such this package will be an attractive and much anticipated release.

CHRIS THOMPSON DOING REDEMPTION SONG

Bob Marley's Redemption Song has become a standard of modern music. It is, amongst the hip cognoscenti, what Wighing Well by 'Free' was to the generation of wannbe guitar heros who were at school with me back in the 1970s. It is a passionate hymn about God and slavery, and there is only one problem with it; most people who attempt to sing it completely screw it up. It is deceptively simple - an easy song to sing, and a difficult one to sing well.

I know that this is the ultimate act of fock and roll apostasy, and I hate to say it, but even Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash made a hash of it. The Chieftains did a great version, but they had Bob Marley's son Ziggy on vocals. The Michael McDonald version was forgettable, as was - surprisingly - Stevie Wonder's. Eternal's version was surprisingly good, and The Selecter did a fantastic version. Manfred Mann's Earthband did a pretty good version, but the version done by their ex-singer Chris Thompson on the new cd/dvd package Berlin Live/Live at the Colos-all is a cracker. Well done dude.

CHRIS THOMPSON TOUR DATES

I have very fond memories of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. They seem to have cropped up in my life on many occasions over the past forty years, and I have always been mildly disappointed that I never got to see them. They were my favourite of the projects that Manfred Sepse Lubowitz (you didn't really think his sirname was 'Mann') put together, although the Manfred Mann Chapter Two jazz-rock project on Vertigo records between 1969-71 is also worth investigation.

The mighty Chris Thompson, (one time singer with Manfred Mann's Earth Band, pictured here with Rob Ayling, is going on tour, and here - especially for you - are the dates...

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
