PHOENIX AMERICANA SUPERGROUP THE ODD BYRDS PAYS TRIBUTE TO A COUNTRY ROCK CLASSIC

Phoenix Americana supergroup the Odd Byrds pays tribute to a country rock classic.

In 1968, the Byrds released Sweetheart of the Rodeo, an LP built on the band's new commitment to traditional American country music. The record was spearheaded by a new Byrd, Gram Parsons, a trust fund dropout who'd fallen for Merle Haggard while studying theology at Harvard, and its devotion to twang shocked the band's folk rock fans. Its birth was marked by power struggles between Byrds leader Roger McGuinn and Parsons, and legal strife between Parsons and Lee Hazlewood, who'd signed Parsons' previous band, the International Submarine Band, to his LHI label and fought to have Parsons' vocals removed from the Byrds' album.

But when the finished record was finally released — with many of Parsons' vocal contributions muted — it would become a foundational pillar of the country rock scene. Along with Parsons' subsequent work with the Flying Burrito Brothers, as a solo act, and with Emmylou Harris, it helped spark a wave of country rock through the '70s and the "alt-country" movement of the late '80s and early '90s, when bands like Uncle Tupelo, the Bottle Rockets, Freakwater, the Waco Brothers, and Tempe's The Grievous Angels (named for a Parsons' song, "Return of the Grievous Angel") began playing a brand of country rock which incorporated punk rock and DIY ethos.

Grievous Angels' pedal steel guitarist Jon Rauhouse — who's gone on to play with Neko Case, Jakob Dylan, Billy Bob Thorton, the Old 97s, and dozens more since the Angels disbanded in 2000 — calls Sweetheart of the Rodeo "musical comfort food," and its songs reside deep within his musical DNA. On Wednesday, December 16, he'll pay tribute to Sweetheart of the Rodeo— as well as songs from the greater Byrds/Parsons repertoire — as part of the Americana supergroup The Odd Byrds, assembled by vocalist/guitarist Matthew John Arnold, featuring guitarists Tommy Connell and Michael Krassner of Boxhead Ensemble, Robin Vining of Sweetbleeders on piano, vocalists Taylor Upsahl and Kelly Ehley, Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra's Lukas Mathers on bass, violinist Carolyn Camp of Pick and Holler, and drummer Don Windham. The band takes the stage with Tierra Del Fuego, playing the music of Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, and KJZZ's Steve Conrad, who'll teach a brief class in the art of western swing dancing, all benefitting Rauhouse's wife Jennifer Rauhouse's suicide prevention charity, Peer Solutions.

THOM THE WORLD POET: Commander Brock speaks on Lemmy.

Commander Brock speaks on Lemmy.

59 mins ·
So very sad to wake to the news that we have lost Lemmy.
He was a character, a gentleman and a friend. I’ll miss him and especially our eccentric text conversations of recent years…

We had a magical bond when we played together. He had a style all of his own and his legendary bass playing will live on forever…..We’ll miss you man, you’ll not be forgotten. DB

Thom remembers Lemmy

WHEN LEMMY CAME TO AUSTIN
The show had to be cancelled
His health was always endangered
(That was his chosen lifestyle..
but we all grew up with Lemmy
when he was part of Hawkwind
and the loss of Lemmy resonates
across too many generations
Of course he was an alpha male
Each band has room for only one ego on stage
But Brock remembers Lemmy with a smile
And we knew him as punk and wild
His bass lines ring within our Silver Machines

7x7 -tonight-dream of Lemmy-in Heavy Metal Heaven!

What Lemmy meant to me - Jeremy Smith

I’ve never forgotten my teenage years, even though some parts are a bit blurry, but one day that really stands out was arriving at Windsor festival in 1973, pitching our tent, wandering off amazed at the people there and then finding Hawkwind playing on the main stage in the middle of a sunny afternoon.  No lights, not a huge crowd, but a driving numbing, rumbling noise that I can still hear to this day.  Hawkwind that afternoon were all over the place but driven by Lemmy’s bass, they played a blinding set and when I listen to their first albums, I can still see Lemmy looking cool in his black shades with a huge bass at the back of the stage.

Fast forward a few years and I’d just bought the 12’’ single of Motorhead and City Kids and again, I’d never heard anything quite like it, I must have played it hundreds of times (sorry flatmates).  It was rock, metal and punk all rolled into one with with lyrics that seems to justify all the gum chewing weekends we had at the time.  You couldn’t dance to it, but you could sing along and boy we did!!  And then watching the Young Ones in 1982 and seeing Motorhead take over the show with Ace of Spades, Lemmy with the microphone set too high and Philthy Animal drumming up a storm.  It blew the rest of the show out of the water.

Some years later, I read Lemmy’s Autobiography, White Line Fever.  The story that still makes me chuckle to this day is that he got bored singing Ace of Spades so changed it to Eight of Spades for a couple of years and no-one noticed.  And that’s the great thing about Lemmy, he didn’t need to embellish his life in any way, he just lived it to the full.  And he made it to seventy and that was that. There will never be another bass player like him and looking at today’s pop stars, I doubt there will ever be a singer who looks like him.  RIP Lemmy, you made a teenage boy stare in wonderment and a grown man weep today!

HOW TRACE NEW STEPS
WHEN ALL LEAD TO (K)NOW?
Days unplugged,nights dreaming boats aflame
Viking marks on stones to show others came before
we who were only once now multi-dimensional
silence a salve/sifting ,shredding,strangling sounds
until that last bubble diver releases to the deep, and joins
those before he and her who sleep in oxygen embrace.Take
time to lose time.Let it go like ashes/bones.Shades and shapes
that otherwise would cling and sing of sailors passed and deep.
Stay shallow, intimate.Release all that was-to better enter this Temple of (K)Now
Even when you cease,or slow,or stop-your breath continues on.Until it stops..
Then you must learn New Words..to Olde Songs..

Adrienne Rich on writing, freedom, and how silence fertilizes the imagination
“The impulse to create begins — often terribly and fearfully — in a tunnel of silence. Every real poem is the breaking of an existing silence.”

Music review: Dweezil Zappa - ’Via Zammata’

Music review: Dweezil Zappa - ’Via Zammata’

Because my oldest brother was a Frank Zappa fan, I naturally became a fan as well.

After borrowing my brother’s copy of 1976’s “Zoot Allures” featuring bizarre selections like “Wind Up Workin’ in a Gas Station,” “The Torture Never Stops” and “Disco Boy,” I was hooked and would spend the following years listening to every new Zappa album my brother would bring home.

Dweezil Zappa follows in his legendary father’s innovative footsteps with a new release that captures the creative lunacy that fueled his father while also flashing moments of infectious pop stylings. Named for the Sicilian street where the Zappa family originated, “Via Zammata’” is Zappa’s first new solo album of original material since 2006’s “Go With What You Know.”

For the new album, Zappa was able to put into practice what he has absorbed from studying and performing his father’s music over the last 10 years. The 46-year-old guitarist comes into his own both musically and lyrically with the creation of the new material.

The album opens with a tantalizing instrumental that blends soaring orchestration with the cosmic edge of progressive rock on “Funky 15,” followed by an angelic chorus intro that quickly transitions into a rousing guitar-driven track on “Rat Race.” “What If” and “Just the Way She Is” freely flow with the pop sensibilities of Fountains of Wayne and “Truth” features more elegant string offers before gently yielding to Zappa’s beautiful guitar work on this instrumental that could easily be mistaken for a composition comprised from the brilliant mind of Brian Wilson for “Pet Sounds.”

The two major highlights of the album involve a pair of engaging collaborations. “Dragon Master” is a menacing heavy metal number first hatched by Zappa’s father in 1988 and displays some masterful guitar work and Judas Priest-like vocals, while “Malkovich” is a surreal opus that revolves around the narration of actor John Malkovich delivering portions of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave.”

WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING
ALL TREES ARE BREATHING
transforming carbon dioxide into oxygen
When you awaken(to birdsong morning)
You see a clarity that has taken lifetimes
Trees became casualties when ignored
They want to be left in wilderness
We chop and clear/turn them into houses
Bodies of dead trees lay on lumber trucks
Perhaps you were a seed once
Maybe you grew like a sapling/thin ,tall
Perhaps you grew among elders(protected/protective)
In a family of multi-species,with orchestral birds as soundtracks
Rings let them know how old you were before tree murder
The desk ,this chair, once grew tall and higher
Let sleeping trees dream
Awaken to a forest dawning
Be tree.

JON ANDERSON: Micky Dolenz & Other Music Stars Share Their Excitement About the New "Star Wars" Movie

The seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters this week, causing an interstellar wave of excitement and anticipation to swell amongst lovers of sci-fi and adventure films around the world. A number of well-known music artists also are looking forward to the new movie, which sees the return of many of original Star Wars cast members, as well as a variety of new faces.

Monkees singer Micky Dolenz tells ABC Radio that he loved the first two Star Warsmovies, but admits that the franchise “kind of lost me after a little while.”

He explains, “I went on to other things, but I was a huge, huge fan of the original, of course.” As for The Force Awakens, Micky notes, “We just had a massive premiere here in Los Angeles, in Hollywood, a couple of nights ago, and…I’m looking forward to seeing this one.”

Former Yes frontman Jon Anderson says he and his old band mates were such big fans of the original Star Wars movie that they jokingly began identifying with different characters from the flick.

“The joke in the Yes band was that [late bassist] Chris Squire was Darth Vader and I was Obi Wan Kenobi,” Anderson tells ABC Radio.

The singer also recalls that Yes’ members were treated to a special midnight screening of the first movie back in 1977 at a Pennsylvania theater while they were rehearsing for a U.S. tour.

ZAPPA'S LOST BROADCAST COMING TO DVD

1968 film, shot during 2nd European tour, to be released this month

A concert film recorded by Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention during their second European tour is to be released on DVD for the first time.

The Lost Broadcast: The Beat Club ’68 was shot in Germany on October 6 that year, during their first visit to the country and its iconic Bremen venue.

The DVD edition includes a band rehearsal alongside the full performance, which features Ian Underwood, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston, Roy Estrada, Jimmy Carl Black, Art Tripp and Motorhead Sherwood.

Gonzo Multimedia say: “Much of this material has never been legitimately released before now. Only the last 35 minutes were ever transmitted.

“The footage shows Frank’s use of his famous hand signals to great effect, conducting and controlling the direction of the music. Enjoy music being made, in the moment, for its own sake.”

Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention 'The Lost Broadcast: The Beat Club '68' to Be Released on DVD

For the first time ever, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention "The Lost Broadcast: The Beat Club '68" entire show will be released on DVD by Gonzo Multimedia in December 2015! This DVD contains a filmed rehearsal of Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention at the legendary Beat Club in Bremen, Germany, on 6th October 1968. It was part of the band's second European tour, the first having occurred a year before, although this was their first visit to Germany.

What can be observed during this event is a typical rehearsal scenario, where the band is eating, drinking, tuning up their instruments, enjoying some laughs, having cosmetics applied and gradually beginning to rehearse. The music is largely one long improvisatory continuous performance rather than a run-through of their greatest hits, but occasionally Zappa directs the band into the opening themes of some of his more well-known pieces. The ensemble performs interesting renditions of "King Kong", "A Pound For A Brown On The Bus", "Sleeping In A Jar" and "Uncle Meat", all of which would be included on the "Uncle Meat" album, which had already been recorded but would not be released for another six months. Also played was an instrumental version of "Let's Make The Water Turn Black", a version of "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask", a stab at the "Prelude To Act 3 of Lohengrin" by Richard Wagner and a nod towards "Octandre" by Edgard Varese.

The footage shows Frank's use his famous hand signals to great effect, conducting and controlling the direction of the music, instructing the musicians when to start, stop, punctuate, slow down, speed up, improvise, play in different time signatures etc.

THE DIGITISER 2000 CHRISTMAS PANT-OH: Chanderella

Picture
Festive salutations! I am K-Max: the Christmas rascal.

As is tradition at this time of year, children throughout the world have retreated into their bakelite cocoons, awaiting my arrival with a mixture of consternation and conjecture. Upon my arrival, I will make some snow come out of my mouth, a bit of mistletoe emerge from my smelly navel, and a date slide out of my anti-bottom ("October 12th" - the day you were born).

Today I present to thee (you) the following: a seasonal Christmas vignette entitled Chanderella. It's behind you! What is? Your conviction for dogging and fit-ups.

Why The Christmas Full Moon Is Even More Important Than You Thought

Dec 22, 2015 6:00 PM

hoto: Courtesy of NASA.
For anyone under 40, this Christmas's full moon is already pretty exciting (this will be the first time we've had one since 1977), but its greater importance goes far beyond how rare an occurrence it is. As you may know, each month's full moon has a specific significance within Pagan traditions, and the full moon itself, regardless of the date, is a meaningful time of the month. That December's full moon, also known as the Cold Moon or the Long Night Moon, coincides with Christmas Day this year presents us with a singular opportunity for reflection and preparation.

Given its traditional name, December's full moon is associated with a negative aspect of the month — the cold, dark, long nights, specifically. One can see this as a natural (if less-than-cheery) symbol for this month's moon, but it can also be an opportunity to step back and consider other sources of warmth and light in your life. Just as the Winter Solstice brings people together, you may recognize that, during the colder months of the year, you seek comfort among friends and family.

These feelings may be stronger than usual this year, as the maternal and familial influence of the full moon may intensify your desire to be around loved ones for the holidays. Other spiritual effects of the full moon (clarity of mind and heart, heightened psychic awareness, a greater capacity for healing) can be beneficial for your end-of-year reflections, and even help you set intentions for 2016. With this in mind, even your Christmas well-wishes can be imbued with the power of the full moon now.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving, charity, and goodwill. The full moon can bring unexpected things about yourself to light. If simultaneously observed, the collision of these two events (the holiday and the full moon) will usher in a truly advantageous moment to reevaluate our place in the world and our relationships with those we care about.
