Gonzo Weekly #353/4

Gonzo Weekly #353/4
THE EVEN STRANGER ISSUE
http://www.gonzoweekly.com/
In this peculiarly psychedelic issue we meet the lovely Melanie S Jane, Alan goes to see Andrew Weatherall and Luke Vibert , Doug critiques Simple Minds, Kev meets the Bob Lazar Story, Graham brings us news of the new Hawkwind album, Jon watches the Beatles-based fantasyfisck Yesterday, and describes the new book by Green Rupert Read. And there is oodles more...
Groovy eh?
Hail Eris!
And there are radio shows from Mack Maloney and Friday Night Progressive AND Strange Fruit, there are columns from Kev Rowland and Mr Biffo, C J Stone, and Roy Weard, but Neil Nixon and the irrepressible Corinna are on hiatus. There is also a collection of more news, reviews, views, interviews and antichinuses who have lost their shoes (OK, nothing to do with tiny marsupials who are searching for their footwear, but I got carried away with things that rhymed with OOOOS) than you can shake a stick at. And the best part is IT's ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!
This issue features:
Yesterday, The Buddha of Suburbia, Rick Wakeman, Arthur Brown, Jon Anderson, Raymone Bain, Michael Jackson, Shaun Ryder, Ozzy Osbourne, Noel Gallagher, Paradise 9, Essra Mohawk, Richard Freeman, Strange Fruit, Friday Night Progressive, Canterbury Sans Frontieres, Mack Maloney's Mystery Hour, Anne Grete Preus, Fulati Gidali, Celso Piña Arvizu, Mikhail Borisovich Romanov, Samuel Lawrence Taylor, Peter Henry Fonda, Ange Didier Houon, Freddy Bannister, (sometimes written as Freddie Bannister), Reb Foster (Born James Dennis Bruton, Neal Casal, Mitch Podolak, The Fall, The Fall's Mark E Smith and Ed Blaney, John Denver with the Mitchell Trio, Man, Justin Hayward, Nico, Michael Bruce, Kev Rowland, Matt Deacon, Bob Lazar, Melanie S Jane, Doug Harr, Simple Minds, Alan Dearling, Acid Ketchup, Luke Vibert, Andy Weatherall's Solstice Weekend, Greenrose Faire, Odin's Court, Twelfth Night, Tony Klinger, C J Stone, Graham Inglis, Hawkwind, Jonathan Downes, The Wild Colonial Boy, Martin Springett, "This Civilisation is Finished", Rupert Read, Bon Iver,

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"

SPACE DEFINES US
SPACES DEFY US
Perimeters,ellipses,like holes in skin
are essential components of patterning.
We are defined as much by absence(haiku
as by presence(sonnet.Power may be @core
but it is also @edges.Relationships are paramount!
We -squares and rectangles/Universe-spirals,circles ,ellipses.
Comparative geometries-Sacred vs Secular.
Merchant barns vs poetry .Sumerian inventories vs Japanese stone gardens.
Shock of fragility.Spaces where we disappear/fascinate.
Hence icons,symbols,markings like branded cattle.
I am sure Jesus would not like crucifixes.
Why mention powers?Geomancy ,feng shui, hold sway..
Stone circles stand,defining crop circles
We walk between worlds.MIND THE GAP!

I can’t explain why, in the face of all the seductive images and lyrical descriptions of the new Tintagel footbridge, I’ve become fixated on a small incision slashed through the surface of the walkway in the middle of the bridge. I know it’s technically the meeting point between the two cantilevered segments, a 40 mm expansion joint in an impeccably engineered structure. But it struck me forcibly that the seemingly reassuring surface connecting clifftop to clifftop, strung in tension over the dizzying void below, had been cut. It gave me a nervous charge. Was this an actual moment of the sublime?

EMOTIONAL BUDGETING
IF LOVE &ART&HEALING WERE IMPORTANT
Then Libraries,Parks,Gardens would be fully funded
They are not,and Festivals in our Parks steal our passive use
into a commercial proposition-for damage caused-money given..
But Parks and Gardens need curating and time to pause between footprints
Same with Libraries-they are de facto Community Centers
and could help homeless instead of banning their packs and animals
Funding would see facilities like showers attached,so reading
could be a passive activity as reprieve from these heated streets
Community means respecting all of us-not just commercial customers
Our Libraries,Parks and Gardens need financial support to stay open
Our Police Force is the most expensive in Texas.

AUBURN: Irish review

Auburn Game Of Faith Scarlet/Gonzo
This artist is Liz Lenten who is based in England and who recorded in Nashville for this album. She is joined by the legendary Thomm Jutz, (Nanci Griffiths, Mary Gauthier), who produced and played guitars, Mark Fain on bass (Ry Cooder, Ricky Skaggs), Lynn Williams on drums (Delbert McClinton, Lee Roy Parnell, The Wallflowers) and Britt Savage on harmony vocals (Garth Brooks, Crystal Gayle). Quite a line up and the song themes focus on a range of reflections around trust. Lenten lost her voice some years ago and in rebuilding her career she has had plenty of reason to put her faith and trust in the power of music to pull her through.
The new release features a strategy-based card game which is something of a departure from the normal promo props one is used to seeing – mind you, my advance copy didn’t include the card game so I can only ponder its powers! Lenten has an unusual vocal delivery which may not suit all tastes but she certainly sings with a unique character and conviction and songs like I Drank and Misshapen Fruit show a quirky edge. This is her fifth release since 2011 when Auburn reunited after taking a career break in order to raise families.
There is a range of influences here, from the Western swing of Trinidad to the roots groove of Red Velvet Pillow, I Don’t Love Him and Float To Blue. Spoke In The Wheel and It’s Not Love carry a more commercial, contemporary sound while the Country feel of Like I Do and the acoustic atmosphere of His Arms both soothe the senses. The title track is influenced by the blues, as is the Bad Girl, Good Woman song arrangement. The playing is superb throughout with understated feel supporting the song structures and a ‘less-is-more’ touch on the entire project.

TO LAUGH AND TO WEEP
To respond to an impossible world
by claiming back one's own reactions..
To allow oneself the full range of possible expression
It may seem absurd or surreal/even inappropriate
but absurd surrealism LIVES!Whether children in cages
or 24 hour solitary confinement..These things should not be-
but they are,and we  can start to diminish their power
by both reacting and responding to such mad"realities"
War is a crime, same as mass murder.CABARET laughed
at the arrogance to those who would harm others.Surrealism, too
from Goya to Bunuel, shows the absurdity of cruelty to humanity.
To change-we need to change.Start with our eyes/proceed to our heart.
Use art.Poetry.Mime.Dance.Every impossible story can have its ending changed
Like Armageddon as a Disney movie.Star Trek over Star Wars.

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
