TECHNICAL ARTICLE ON RICK WAKEMAN'S MICROPHONES

Rick Wakeman recently completed three concerts as part of a fundraiser for the Cathedral of Gloucester. The first gig took place in Blackfriars Abbey, a medieval building in the heart of the City of Gloucester, while the remaining concerts took place on consecutive nights at Cheltenham Racecourse.

On all three occasions DPA microphones featured in the equipment inventory, with more than 50 units used to amplify the audio, including two new DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphones. Front of House sound engineer Ian Barfoot, who was also system designer for the shows, said: "DPA microphones always deliver an honest, super clean, uncoloured sound and I get predictable results every time I use them. They are also incredibly reliable, which is a major point in their favour."

Barfoot specified DPA microphones for all three concerts, with the bulk of the inventory being used for the larger Cheltenham gigs. In total, 30 DPA 4060 miniature microphones were used on all the high strings and harp, 12 DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones were used on all the low strings, four d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones were employed on snare drum and toms, a DPA d:dicate™ 2011C compact microphone was used for the kick drum, along with three DPA d:dicate 2011C microphones for overheads and ride cymbal. The DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones were used for main and backing vocals.

THE DUTCH WOODSTOCK: Ummmmmm I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad review

http://www.progwereld.org/cms/recensies/album/diverse-artiesten-%E2%80%93-the-dutch-woodstock/

Various Artists - The Dutch WoodstockThe Holland Pop Festival in Kralingse Forest was 26, 27 and 28 June 1970, the first major multi-day music festival in our country. Three days occurred in the area of Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival many famous bands and artists, but the festival in Rotterdam knew - in the fine tradition of festivals at the time - a lot of business and organizational problems.

Within a year of 'Kralingen' movie 'Stamping Ground' premiered. That was almost as much a worldwide status as the film about Woodstock, with camera work by a young Jan de Bont. The images he shot of playing at sunrise Pink Floyd are now legendary. The film is now in a new generation increasing, as evidenced by the publication of "The Dutch Woodstock", a little tentative titled small box containing a DVD of "Stamping Ground" and two CDs with recordings made during the festival.

Went all the hairs stand up somewhat. In announcing this release Would there be some sort definitive collection possible with professional recordings? A beautifully polished 'Stamping Ground', possibly enriched with interesting bonus material Soft Machine, Santana, Pink Floyd and East of Eden?

Twice the answer is simply no.

What this has done English society, dating from 1990 is a double CD bootleg 'Stamping Ground Festival (on the Italian label Aulica) again delete the mastering. And those mediocre recordings are themselves already appeared on the legendary 'Kralingen "vinyl bootleg (three plates together fifteen guilders costs') with shots from the film and additional public recordings. Also the Italian Akarma label it a few years ago dared to bring this set. Semi-legally on the market

What was ever available from the Kralingen recordings is not expanded by Gonzo. And not everything is technically sound, the reason for which many people will buy this set are the songs of Pink Floyd, which are almost impossible to listen to, because there are many 'extraction clicks' to be heard. The consequence of a bad rip of the bootleg CDs listed. Even there is no great attention. A huge disappointment for those who had high expectations of this set ...
More than okay, the DVD and packaging. The original festival poster adorns an appropriate manner, the cover and the booklet contains many memorabilia of the festival and the film release of "Stamping Ground". That movie is sharp in full on the DVD and is, for those who have not seen it, the purchase of this set (around 15 euros) worth. A portrait of the era with lots of sun, grass, smoke, exposed and transparent pyramids. Carefully polished, the colors are well improved and strengthened, while the darker images are not artificial 'clarified'.

The images of Country Joe, Dr.. John, Santana, a good form being The Byrds and the rugged play of It's A Beautiful Day (undervalued Westcoast psychedelics!) Make the film remains a fascinating historical document, combined with the images of the audience and the festival site. And Pink Floyd: ten minutes of the closing film of the festival and also (at four o'clock in the morning), represented by fragments of Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun and A Saucerful Of Secrets .

"The Dutch Woodstock" is a publication that might be typical for this time. Everything is possible in the field of semi-legal (re) publications, research and the mastering of the recordings used not rise above mediocrity and it does matter. Precisely so if proverbial eye-catcher is a nice set with the best DVD version of "Stamping Ground" that may be possible. The two CDs stabbing in all respects thereby embarrassing off, so buy the set not therefor. Therefore, a somewhat dubious release, with producers much better could bet on a nicely packaged DVD, rather than rushed documenting a piece of Dutch history festival. NEW BAND FOR GEOFF DOWNES (no relation)

DECKCHAIR POETS - Who Needs PyjamasDECKCHAIR POETS -
Who Needs Pyjamas
Never the one to slow down, Geoff Downes, formed new band – all without severing his obligations with YES and ASIA – with kindred spirits Nick D’Virgilio, a drummer mostly known for his work with SPOCK’S BEARD, and singer Lynden Williams of JERUSALEM, whose only album, produced by Ian Gillan, is a cult classic. This new band is called DECKCHAIR POETS, and their debut, “Who Needs Pyjamas”, is out on Angel Air on October 7th.
Says Williams, “It was obvious from the fun nature of ‘Pyjamas’ songs that they could not be released under the JERUSALEM banner and a new name was needed. Geoff and I considered, at our time of life we should be sitting on a beach somewhere reciting amusing limericks and thus the name appeared”.

THOSE WE HAVE LOST: Gary Shearston (1939-2013)

Another little bit of my past has died. Back in the autumn of 1974, when the UK went into its second General Election of the year I had Whooping Cough very badly and about six weeks off school. During this period this record was one of my favourites. My father heard it and started to rant about how Shearston had destroyed the purity of the original by mentioning Cocaine (it was in the original lyrics, but my Dad would never see sense when he was angry - a bit like me), and how disgusting Shearston's long hair was. No wonder the British Empire had collapsed, yadda yadda yadda.

I still like the record, even though I have been singularly unmoved by most of the other music of his that I have heard, and I am sad that he has died.

Rest in peace dude.

VOICE!

Began when hearing Samuel Taylor Coleridge
reciting"BREAK!BREAK! BREAK!"on a wax cylinder
tinny and remote in thin time's corridor. Then Dylan Thomas on LP
UNDER MILK WOOD(better performed via Richard Burton's version
and BBC poets on radio.ABC poets ditto. Then movies of poets(Canadian Film Board)
reciting their word works to posthumous audiences.
Then hearing a cassette of Sylvia Plath-bright bell shining voice!
Given a double LP of International Poets/Dutch Poets (in English)
Hearing the sound of Russian poet Yevtushenko LIVE in performance
seeing how he made words dance-DA! and NYET!
Small thimble soundcloud of Virginia Woolf
transcribed from a BBC tape-thin as a tapeworm
when all she was saying is"words belong to each other"
And they do.So they are.Married to symbol and sound
Far better to hear each one while they are alive
than to suffer the historical error of believing
words on paper are all Shakespeare had to offer...

Rick Wakeman revives prog-rock masterpiece at NIA

Rick Wakeman

Rick Wakeman

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Rick Wakeman’s Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, the Yes man’s take on the Jules Verne novel that, according to your point of view, represented an inspired crossover triumph or a high-water mark in prog-rock excess.
And to mark the occasion a new production of the piece will hit the arena circuit, kicking off at Birmingham’s NIA on April 29, with tickets going on sale at 9am on Monday.
The keyboard maestro will be accompanied by The Jules Verne Symphony Orchestra and the sets have been designed by Roger Dean, the man whose sleeve art became an integral part of Yes’s success.
Wakeman’s original piece is one of the most successful concept albums in history, shifting over 15 million copies, and the revival is timely because it also coincides with the 150th anniversary of Verne’s novel.

Jefferson Starship Guitarist Slick Aguilar Says He May Soon Receive Liver Transplant

There are some encouraging developments with regard to longtime Jefferson Starship guitarist Slick Aguilar‘s quest to receive a liver transplant.  The 58-year-old rocker, who found out late last year that he needed the life-saving operation, posted a message on his official Facebook page last week revealing that he got some good news from his doctors.
“I was told that I am now first in line for a transplant for my blood type whenever the next liver becomes available,” Aguilar reports.
However, Slick also reveals that there’s a negative side to his situation.  “My blood type is B-[minus], which is kind of rare,” he explains.  “So, even though I am now at the top of the list, it could still take a while before a B-[minus] liver becomes available.  Could be tomorrow — could be 6 months.”
Aguilar, whose condition forced him to stop touring with Jefferson Starship, admits that he has mixed feeling about the impending surgery.

MR AVERELL REVIEW

In the world of music there are some bands that like to go for the weird instead of the normal when playing music. When listening to Mr. Averell's new album "Gridlock" I was astounded by what I was hearing. The music being played is so random and unoridnary that it surprised me. If I where to play the association game with these songs each song brought up different images of things like a puppet, a horror movie, and even Dracula. This music is odd and weird where on the first listening I was more stunned by what I was hearing but with each time I heard the songs I grew to like them more and more. And not it's not because they kept playing that made me like them, it's because I would hear something different each time that built the songs as well as the songs just being well played, that made me like them.

The one song that I didn't like and didn't feel in place with the other 11 songs, is the opening song "Lock". When it first played I didn't even know it was playing. After about 30 seconds I checked to see if I had hit play. That's when I saw that it was playing and only had a few more seconds left to play. When it ended I played it again, turned up the volume, and was able to hear the song play. This first song is very low and quiet compared to the other songs so I just skipped it when I was playing the album over again. However, the rest of the songs are very well played that are so much fun to listen to. There's all sorts of sounds being created in the songs by using organs, horns, guitar, violin, , and even the vocals themselves are used to build a very odd but good set of songs.

I'm not sure what kind of meaning the songs would have, well some seem to be pretty straight to the point like with "Kiss the Girl!" but then there is the song "Boxes" and "Babel", which by the way I enjoyed "Babel" the most, that the lyrics just don't make any sense. This is an album that's weird, that's the best way I can come up with to describe the feelings the songs emit, weird. They're fun, lots of fun in fact, but the odd way that vocals are being sung in, the eclectic sounds, and the ominous beats being put out in the songs make this album stand out over a lot of the untypical groups. Which because of this oddity these songs have, the well orchestrated beats, and vocals that make you notice them, that I liked this album as much as I did.

GERMAN ANT-BEE REVIEW (translated)

Pure Electric HoneyAnyone who knows him, 'the' Ant-Bee , will not be surprised by the track name and the names and aliases of the musicians know what the outcome is going. All others may serve the reading of the names mentioned as a reference, not for everyday use to find on this CD. Almost nothing.

"Pure Electric Honey" was first published in 1990 (LP) and this first album of Billy James aka Ant-Bee shows the baby steps of the avant-garde surrealism freaks with a 4-track tape machine. Explore what is, look how his love of music in the style of an artist like Syd Barrett or albums like . Magical Mystery Tour / Sgt Pepper can implement. The result was called "Pure Electric Honey" and love the created, turned Billy on the Bomp / Voxx label in Los Angeles. For the time in the Under Psychedelic underground scene was announced from the sixties and his music even got radio play time.Inconceivable, if you look at today's media landscape. Even private channels, locally or in the I-Net are likely to do with such musical output difficult nowadays.

The above two albums, as well as the music of Pink Floyd to Syd's times are actually almost pop, compared to Ant Bees output. Perhaps because one of the Beatles as well as Pink Flyod even the weirdest moments always connects somewhere in some way or combination of ingenious melodies.

When Ant-Bee this 'head-connection' is missing and you have to work out the music. Exactly, the songs to be discovered. The best early in the morning or late at night, on the one hand if you have the muse to have new in the head, or this is already so stuffed from the day that he simply takes this type of honey without much resistance.
Quotes from the booklet, which documents the development of the title, require in their testimony no further explanation: "Just listen, you might hear something." Or: "... the music thing ahead of it's time ..." She was safe and for the Most of them will be there to this day. The quote number one hits the nail on the head, because after initial 'difficulties' opens a sudden the music. These beginners thoughts you Informed initially if perhaps the house cat is ill and complains if a window shop with no wind rattles, ask the frogs from the neighbor's garden pond for asylum or the washing machine heralds the imminent transition to the scrap dealer by noise so pale after third listening test, and so many should also concede the plate. Ant-Bee has brought a psychedelic cosmos on CD - probably mention here and there experimental, but partly equipped with very harmonious moments - who wants to be discovered and recorded especially. Is that done, you can 'leave' come easy and the music as if by magic it automatically installs itself in exactly the places in the head, where it is currently expected and welcome.

Of course, and I'll guarantee it, is not an album, which is at the pole position on the shelf. Also, because you have an aural safe again after an appropriate time interval. But succeeded that's when jostling Bagpipes and Wetkyi moods with birds and frogs to the listener's favor when mellifluous sounds with vocal samples and drum attacks compete or sudden sinking beautiful surrealistic soundscapes in monstrous dark Angründen in the mind's eye. Ant-Bee has with illustrious musicians flock, among other things about his past 'reported' ... that he ate in protest for three weeks with his band stays When chocolate or what he experienced during his India trip. And that's what makes "Pure Electric Honey" an authentic work. No normal output-musicians with whom ambition whatsoever: Here you can when you open yourself to get direct insight into the psyche and soul of a musician. itself I liked the way the Indian best moments as they before mysticism and pleasant, almost trance- rhythm are bursting like that. If, and this is important if you have been listening to.2013er overlay issue are the way at five demo versions of 1987, which in principle do not dance while listening to out of line, but get involved as a matter of course into the overall structure.

ERIC BURDON DECLARES MORE: Eric Burdon

Eric Burdon“I’m running around out there like a little athlete singing my ass off. I’ve done that with an asthmatic condition. That tells you something about the power of music.” The legendary musician talks about his new album, his estimable legacy, and more. (His North American tour kicks off this weekend, June 29, in Costa Mesa, CA.)
Eric Burdon figures he got a rude awakening from life pretty early – the day he was born. It was May 11, 1941, in Newcastle upon Tyne. England was at war with Germany.
“The hospital I was born in was hit by high-intensity bombs from the Luftwaffe, flying off from occupied Finland,” he recalls, in a phone interview from his home in Joshua Tree, California. “So knock, knock. Wake up, Eric! Welcome to the world.”
One could argue that Burdon, who is touring behind his recent bluesy, soulful and lyrically topical album ’Til Your River Runs Dry, has had a certain adversarial relationship with life ever since. His first band had the impolite, confrontational name of the Animals. Initially part of the great British Invasion of America in 1964, their biggest hits were about living amid poverty and degradation in New Orleans (“The House of the Rising Sun,” an adaptation of a folk ballad) and the fear of getting old and gray in a dirty industrial town (Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil’s “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”).

Napster Doc 'Downloaded': Watch Metallica's Lars Ulrich, Byrds' McGuinn Testify in Exclusive Clip

The new documentary "Downloaded" chronicles the rise and fall of Napster, the file-sharing app that flipped the music world upside-down. In one scene, premiered below, musicians such as Metallica's Lars Ulrich and the Byrds' Roger McGuinn show just how deeply digital music had divided the industry with testimony on the Senate floor.

"I think that what we've witnessed was an internal conflict, not just one guy on one side," "Downloaded" director Alex Winter told Billboard.com, citing artists' twin needs of wanting their work heard and needing to make a living -- a situation that continues to evolve. "Metallica put their entire catalog on Spotify."
The film addresses Napster from multiple angles -- from its legal and ethical components, including artist and RIAA criticism and its numerous legal battles, and from the personal side, the communities the site built and the friendship of collaborators Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. The project began life in 2002 as a narrative film that Winter says wound up in turnaround at a major studio. Eventually, he decided a documentary would be a better fit to explore wounds that, over a decade later, are still fresh for many.

ERIC BURDON FEATURE

Eric Burdon.JPGEric Burdon performs during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York, Monday, March 15, 2010.
Of all the sounds heard from the 1960s British Invasion, there might be none that match the woeful and sheer bluesy menace of the Animals' Eric Burdonlamenting his innocence lost in a certain house in New Orleans.
Burdon has just marked his half-century as a singer with the release of "'Til Your River Runs Dry." His best received work in years, "River" finds the English artist grappling with some tried-and-true blues themes: mortality ("27 Forever"), youth vs. authority ("Old Habits Die Hard") and good vs. evil ("Devil and Jesus").
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer answered questions for The Oregonian via email from his home in California, where he was working on his third memoir and preparing for a summer tour that includes a stop at the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival. The following exchange has been edited for clarity and brevity.

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
