THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?

WHAT WOULD WATER DO?
ESCAPE FROM THE PRISON OF CLOUDS
Share her liquidity to all hungry seeds
Gather in creeks  and tributaries/become streams
that merge into rivers that flow into the deep.
Start as storm and end as peace.Change state
according to context and circumstance.FLOW!
Chill as ice and sleet and snow.Freeze when appropriate.
Water slips fast past blockages/brings down walls and dams.
Water has power to move us(emotionally)-to salt water tears
of grief or joy or laughter/and expects us to hold our waters..
Spring,well,fissure-from within our only earth comes water
Laughing when young and fresh and bright and brave
Slow as mud when detritus clogs efficacies..
We are as water is-we flow, slow, stop, change state
Freeze when afraid, heat when red conflict warms
Snowflakes and fingerprints.Unique and different.
Ask water where she will glow next.Might be in you.

Born in Perivale, Middlesex, England, Rick Wakeman's interest in music manifested itself very early, and from the age of seven on he studied classical piano. At the age of 14, he joined a local band, Atlantic Blues, the same year he left school to enroll in the Royal College of Music. He had his eye on a career as a concert pianist, but Wakeman was dismissed from the college after it became clear that he preferred playing in clubs to studying technique.

By his late teens, he was an established session man, playing on records by such diverse acts as Black Sabbath, Brotherhood of Man, and Edison Lighthouse. At the end of the '60s, his name also began appearing on the credits of albums by such artists as Al Stewart and David Bowie, and one set of sessions with a folk-rock band called the Strawbs led to his joining the group in 1970. After two albums with the Strawbs, Wakeman joined Yes, a post-psychedelic hard rock band that had attracted considerable attention with their first three albums. Wakeman played a key role in the final shape of the group's fourth record, Fragile, creating a fierce, swirling sound on an array of electric and acoustic pianos, synthesizers, and Mellotrons. Fragile was a hit, driven by the chart success of the single "Roundabout," and Wakeman was suddenly elevated to star status.

Yes' next album, Close to the Edge, expanded his audience and his appeal, for his instruments were heard almost continually on the record. During the making of Close to the Edge in 1972, Wakeman also recorded his first solo album, an instrumental work entitled The Six Wives of Henry VIII, which consisted of his musical interpretations of the lives and personalities of the said six royal spouses. Released early in 1973 on A&M Records, it performed respectably on the charts. Public reception of Yes' 1974 album, Tales From Topographic Oceans, was mixed, and the critics were merciless in their attacks upon the record. Wakeman exited the group before the album's supporting tour. His new solo album, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, adapted from the writings of Jules Verne and featuring a rock band, narrator (David Hemmings), and full orchestral and choral accompaniment, was released to tremendous public response in both America and England, where it topped the charts. In 1975, his next album, The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, was given a grand-scale premiere at Wembley's Empire Pool, although it also cost Wakeman a fortune to stage the event on ice. During this same period, Wakeman began working on film scores with the music for Ken Russell's Lisztomania, which was a modest hit.

In 1977, Wakeman returned to Yes, with which he has continued recording and touring. His solo career continued on A&M into the end of the '70s, with Criminal Record and Rhapsodies, which were modestly successful. Wakeman's biggest media splash during this period, however, came through his alleged role in getting the Sex Pistols dropped by A&M Records soon after being signed. None of this bothered his fans, which rapidly expanded to encompass those he picked up through his work with lyricist Tim Rice on a musical adaptation of George Orwell's 1984, and his burgeoning film work, which included the music to movies about the 1976 Winter Olympics and the 1982 soccer World Cup competition. Additionally, he became a regular on Britain's Channel 4. Wakeman's audience and reputation survived the 1980s better than almost any progressive rock star of his era, as he continued releasing albums on his own label. He also remained associated with Yes into the '90s.

In January 2016, Trevor Rabin announced he plans to perform with Wakeman and Jon Anderson as Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman (ARW), later in the year. Anderson revealed the three wrote "some unique songs together". Also in January, following requests from fans, Wakeman recorded piano versions of "Life on Mars?", "Space Oddity", and "Always Together" as a tribute to David Bowie following his death with proceeds from the songs donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

ROCKING RAZ REVIEW REVEALED

Title - '#9'
Artist - The Raz Band
For those not in the know, for the last thirty-five years, The Raz Band has been recording and performing their own brand of original songs, entertaining audiences across the US and globally.
This past December 2018 The Raz Band recorded their first live album performing songs from the upcoming #9 album as well as their most recent albums Madison Park (2015) and The Best of RAZ 1985-2015.
And so with that in mind, the latest Raz Band studio album #9, which features eleven new Raz Band songs, is due for release May 17th, 2019 via Gonzo Multimedia.
1. 'Breadline Love'
2. 'I Got This'
3. 'Curveball'
4. 'In the Meantime'
5. 'Coming at You'
6. 'The Winds of Time'
7. 'Let Me Tell You'
8. 'Call Me Raz'
9. 'The Times Together'
10. 'Nipple Town'
11. 'Dirt'
Featuring tremendous production by band member Joey Molland, The Raz Band members are: Michael 'Raz' Rescigno on guitar and vocals; Jeff 'Hutch' Hutchinson on drums and vocals; Jim Manzo on bass and vocals, and Molland on guitar, vocals and production.
The album opens with the fun old school R&B guitar rock of 'Breadline Love' and backs that up seamlessly with both the hipsway of 'I Got This' and the magnificent, cultured guitar work found on 'Curveball.'
The first track notable for the fact that it's the very first time that Joey Molland has sung lead vocals, both 'In The Meantime' and 'Coming At You' are pure The Raz Band gold, with the Jeff 'Hutch' Hutchinson-sung 'Winds Of Time' along next.
The other Molland-sung track is the epic 'Let Me Tell You' which they back up with one of my own personal favorites, the rock and soul of 'Call Me Raz.' The album then rounds out with the troubadour-esque vibe of 'The Times Together' and then the quirky 'Nipple Town.'
We had a great time creating #9," Moland has since said, "and we hope you enjoy it. Peace, love and rock n roll."
With The Raz Band having opened for Badfinger, Missing Persons, Berlin, Marky Ramone, Bill Ward, Iron Butterfly and others, 2019 will once again see The Raz Band performing in the United States as well as abroad.

WILDE BEWARE
IF YOU ARE WILDE,YOU BETTER BEWARE!
Be wary.Be Aware!Be alert. Are that the earth beneath you
may soon hold your bones(if hunters value your flesh,or horns)
It is as if there is a lottery on your life.If you are small and cute as a koala
you may get a petting zoo-or animal sanctuary. If you are huge as a gorilla...
you will need a Jane Goodall as protector. Most who are made of meat will be eaten.
Served up as alligator steaks or deer stew.Even gentle kangaroos..farmed like salmon.
Soon there will be only photographs and footprints left /for all wilde will be bred out of us
We will forget how to fly.How to fight. How to fantasize. How to leap out of Tsunami zones
as birds do,sniffing bushfires. That adrenal rush will leave us/sitting ducks.
And it is always duck season.Reason has nothing to do  with this.Extermination
is ongoing to completion.Once the wild has left or been cut down to mild companion animal  cages/
the rest can rest knowing only humans as hunters/until the next Extinction Saga repeats

KEV ROWLAND - Polish review translated

Rowland, Kev - The Progressive Underground Vol. I (a book)

Artur Chachlowski , Rowland, Kev - The Progressive Underground Vol. I (a book)
In the age of internet and electronic social media, the world is not as huge as it may seem. And people, especially when they share their passion and common interests, can communicate on the electronic highway in an instant.
It was not always like this. At the beginning of the last decade of the twentieth century, just a few months after the defeat of the Berlin Wall (which in itself was a caesura separating two political ages), and a few years after leaving the Marillion group by its charismatic frontman, Fish (what a progressive rock fan was a caesura more important), a shipment from Great Britain came to my hands. Its broadcaster was Kev Rowland, who sent me one of the first issues of his own fanzine called Feedback devoted to widely understood progressive music. The feedback was based on the RockSIG (Rock Special Interest Group) newsletter of the Mensa organization. His first edition appeared in October 1988 and had 28 pages. The sixth number that landed in its mailbox already had 60 pages, in the middle there were a lot of interesting reviews of the latest prog rock albums. Today it is hard to imagine: fanzines, independent magazines, printing with a multiplier, postal mailing, gluing stamps on an envelope ... These were times. And I dare say that thanks to people like Kev and thanks to publications such as progressive feedback, and especially the propagation of knowledge about it, it could develop in the best.
And there was something to write about. Contrary to popular belief, progressive rock has not disappeared from the world map with the emergence of punk rock, and despite the lack of interest in commercial media, the wave of creating new bands and the emergence of new music has not stopped. Although the genre fell out of the mainstream media, luckily, the demand for this type of music has never ended.
Cordland's Feedback fanzine quickly became one of the most well-known, popular and influential industry magazines. In total, more than 80 issues appeared and it survived practically until 2006, when Kev moved from his native England to New Zealand, where he lives to this day and does not think about musical retirement - to this day, among others to the group of permanent reviewers of the MLWZ.PL portal
The time in which Feedback functioned was unique in many respects, and when it seemed that it was gone forever, the renowned publishing house Gonzo Multimedia has published a book called "The Progressive Underground Vol. I", which contains all the Kev album reviews that have been published in its fanzine in 1991-2006. The subtitle "Volume 1" indicates that there will be more parts of this release (Volumeny II and III will be released later this year), and this thick, 300-page book alphabetically includes artists from letter A to H (specifically from the ACT group to Husband, Gary Husband).
The first volume of The Progressive Underground includes a foreword by Stuart Nicholson from the Galahad group and, on the back cover, comments by Greg Spawton (Big Big Train) and Clive Nolan (Arena, Pendragon). Inside a few hundred album reviews, some of which have survived into the history of the genre, others have been forgotten, and the vast majority of them have contributed to the fact that they are raising a second and even third generation of listeners. This book is best treated as a kind of guide to the neoprogressive species. Thanks to this release, you can rediscover the wonderful albums of great bands and see that progressive rock has never really died, it just went from the mainstream to the underground.
Where can you get this valuable publication? "The Progressive Underground" is best ordered directly from the Gonzo Multimedia publisher: http://www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk/search/product_details/16151/Kev_Rowland-The_Progressive_Underground_Vol_1.html
Below is the list of artists you will find in Volume 1: ACT, Abarax, Abbfinoosta, Abel Ganz, Abiogenesi, Acid Mother Gong, Adachi Kyodai, Addison Project, AD Infinitum, Advent, Aelian, Aesculus Hipp, After, After Crying, After The Fall , After @ All, Afterglow, Agarta, Ageness, Agent Cooper, Ajalon, Jan Akkerman, Alaska, Albion, Al-Bird, Alias Eye, Alien On My Mind, Alientar, Alkemys, Daevid Allen, Daevid Allen & Russell Hibbs, Amarok, The Amber Light, Ambervoid, Amorphis, Anabis, Anathema, Andeavour, Robert Andrews, Anekdoten, Animator, Annalist, Anyone's Daughter, Arachnes, Aragon, Archetype, Ardency, Areknames, Arena, Ark, Arkus, Artension, ARZ, Asgard, Ashada, Asia, Astralasia, Ataraxia, Aton's, A Triggering Myth, Atria, Attica, At War With Self, Ausia, Axiom, Kevin Ayres, Ayreon, Marvin Ayres,Marvin Ayres + Peter Gomes, Azazello, Max Bacon, Vladimir Badirov, Frank Balestracci, Band of Rain, Peter Banks, Barclay James Harvest Featuring Les Holroyd, Barrock, Colin Bass, Adrian Belew, Believe, Robert Berry, Beyond The Labyrnith, Big Big Train, Black Bonzo, Black Bonzo, Blackfield, Black Jester, The Black Noodle Project, Tim Blake, Blow Up Hollywood, Blurt, Blyndsyde, Tomas Bodin, Jean Pascal Boffo, Bolt, The Bond, Andrew Booker, Christian Boule, Tim Bowness, Brassé, Brighteye Brison, Broadcast, Brother Ape, Budderfly, Tim Burness, Maryen Cairns, Cairo, California Guitar Trio, Laurent Calomne, Robert Calvert, Carpathia Project, The Carpet Knights, Carptree, Cashmere, Casino, Cast, Castarnac, Casual Affair, Marc Catley & Geoff Mann, Catweazle, Centrozoon, Cerebus Effect, Chain, Dennis Chambers, Jeff Berlin, David Fiuczynski, T. THOM SENT THIS: Young Leonard Cohen Reads His Poetry in 1966 (Before His Days as a Musician Began)

Many a singer-songwriter who first rose to prominence in the 1960s has taken the label of "poet," usually applied by adoring fans, no doubt to the objection of a fair few serious poetry enthusiasts. But who among them could deny Leonard Cohen's status as a poet? Though best known as a musician, Cohen has also racked up indisputable writerly credentials, having published not just the novels Beautiful Losers and The Favorite Game but many books of poetry including Death of a Lady's ManLet Us Compare Mythologies, and Flowers for Hitler. Some of them include not just poems written as poems but song lyrics — or perhaps works that began as songs but became poems. Surely his albums contain songs that began as poems. Those interested in figuring out Cohen's simultaneous development as a poet and songwriter would do well to listen to his early poetry readings, like that of "Prayer for Messiah" at the top of the post.

RAZ BAND/#9:  If you were wondering where those Badfingers, Eagles and Byrds associates and others wound up, they congregated here and are rocking the night away.  Not caring if they fit the format or not, this is music for boomers who want to go to the show for reasons other than hold up their camera phone to prove they were there.  With a second disc that keeps it coming tucked into the package, this is a fine reminder of how it all was when under water mortgages weren’t even a blip on the horizon.  Check it out.

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
