Pops by the Sea: Former Yes frontman teams up with SLO Symphony

An internationally renowned rock star and a jazz-folk chanteuse will join the San Luis Obispo Symphony on stage this weekend in a in a concert roughly two decades in the planning.
On Sunday, former Yes frontman Jon Anderson and singer Inga Swearingen will co-headline the symphony’s annual Pops by the Sea concert in Avila Beach.
The program, emceed by KSBY daytime anchor Dan Shadwell, includes such classic Yes songs as “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Roundabout” and “Long Distance Runaround,” as well as Beatles favorites “Blackbird” and “A Day in the Life.”
“I’ve always thought it’d be wonderful to sing with the orchestra,” Anderson said, praising the San Luis Obispo Symphony as “one of the finest orchestras in North America.” “It’s wonderful to hear these people playing around you. It’s like you’re surrounded by this energy.”
Anderson who formed the progressive rock band Yes with bassist Chris Squire in 1968, grew up listening to classical music by the likes of Edward Elgar, Igor Stravinsky and Ralph Vaughan Williams on the BBC.
“You just wondered ‘How do people create that kind of music?’ ” the Englishman recalled.
Years later, Anderson decided to incorporate some of the symphonic sounds he’d heard on the radio into modern rock ’n’ roll. Yes’s second album, 1970’s “Time and a Word,” was its first to feature a live studio orchestra.
The 1993 album “Symphonic Music of Yes,” featuring orchestral versions of Yes songs arranged by Jethro Tull’s Dee Palmer, found Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Bill Bruford performing alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and the London Community Gospel Choir. Then, in 2001, Yes joined forces with a 60-piece orchestra for the album “Magnification.”
“That was the joy of working with Yes. They’re very talented musicians (so their music) translates very well to orchestra,” said Anderson, who parted ways with the band in 2008.
San Luis Obispo Symphony Music Director Michael Nowak, a self-avowed Yes fan, said he’s wanted to collaborate with Anderson since the prog rocker moved to Arroyo Grande around 1995.
However, Nowak added, Anderson’s busy schedule prevented him from teaming up with the symphony until now — as did a shortage of musical scores of Anderson’s songs arranged for orchestra.

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

water was more than a goddess.It was(and is)Life itself.
You can live without food ,O breatharians!
but you can not live without water. Before we ask water to be clean and pure

Interview with OLIVER WAKEMAN – Part 1

It’s difficult not to be a musician if you’re a Wakeman. And it takes audacity to play in the same instrumental where your father is a towering figure (pun intended). But Oliver Wakeman, the elder son of Rick, feels no need for competition, both as solo artist and a collaborator, even though his stint in major bands hasn’t been so steady. Which only goes to show Oliver’s strong-mindedness and artistic will that are boldly and beautifully manifested on his latest work, "Ravens & Lullabies", a joint effort with Gordon Giltrap and a start of our career-spanning conversation.

- Oliver, your new album: I was really surprised that it’s a vocal album and a rock album in a good sense of the word.

Thank you. I wanted to do something that people weren’t expecting.

Interview With Blues Legend John Mayall

John Mayall is a legend. His iconic band, the Bluesbreakers, also happens to be the launching pad for some of the world’s most famous music makers, like Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (of the Rolling Stones). And at 82 he’s still a creative force.

If you have any doubts, you should check him out when he comes to the Tupelo Music Hall on Sept. 13, where he will perform a tiny fraction of the music he’s recorded (more than 60 albums in 58 years). Or just pick up his latest CD, “A Special Life,” to hear his trademark harmonica and unmistakable vocals on lyrics like, “I got no plan to guide me, never plan to fade away.”

How often do you tour?

Every gig we do is cross generation - it’s always been a young audience mixed with old.

This year it’s a bit more than usual with the new album. Typically, 100 shows each year, this year 130.

You've been playing since the early ‘60s when the rock and blues and soul music scenes all exploded at the same time. Did you know then that you were part of something so big and enduring?

Yeah, you couldn’t help but notice – it was a very exciting period. Everybody had that expectation. It was a very creative time.

Is there any common thread that connects the eras?

I don’t know. It evolves and develops as it goes along. The blues has changed since it began in the 1930s, but it matches up with the era that it’s in and stays true to its essence.

Ginger Baker Turns 75: The Strange Life of Rock's Wildest Drummer

Ginger-baker-3
IMAGE: MICHAEL OCHS ARCHIVES/GETTY IMAGES

The percussive genius behind the legendary British rock trio Cream turned 75 on Tuesday.

Ginger Baker, born Peter Edward Baker on Aug. 19, 1939, is regarded as not only one of the greatest drummers to ever grace the instrument — a man many have called a natural with the sticks — but also one of the rock world's craziest musicians off the stage.

On his 75th birthday, let's take a look back at some of the wildest turns in Baker's long and bizarre life.

Bill Bruford: The Autobiography: Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks and More (2009)

‘If the British Prime Minister’s Cabinet could co-operate on the same level as the great Miles Davis quintets, we’d be experiencing a different form of government altogether.’ (page 142)
This is an absolutely brilliant book. It is a rare example of an autobiography by a musician who’s got something interesting to say – about making music, about his own feelings and ambitions in music, about the bands he’s played with, about the enormous changes he’s seen over the past 40 years in the music ‘business’ and wider society – and who says it with intelligence and dry humour. The only comparisons I can think of are Mile Davis’s and Bob Dylan’s autobiographies, but Bill’s has intelligent and thoughtful points to make about a much wider range of subjects. And he’s English (hooray!)
If you’re interested in the music of the 70s, if you’re interested in progressive rock music, if you’re interested in jazz, if you want to know how albums are actually pieced together, how bands behave on the road, how the recording studio works, what managers are like, the cost to a person’s private life of being a working musician doing gruelling foreign tours, if you want tips on how to survive in the music business, or if you’re just interested in the social, political, cultural and economic history of the last 40 years, then buy this wonderful book!
Review
Bill Bruford, son of a vet from Sevenoaks in Kent, was a teenage prodigy of a drummer, as soon as he could taking the train up to London to see American jazz drummers performing at Ronny Scott’s and other Soho jazz clubs in the mid-60s and learning from everyone. By 1968 a series of chance encounters led him to land the gig as drummer in the new progressive band, Yes, his extraordinary technique propelling the band through their first five albums: Yes, Time and A WordThe Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971) and their masterpiece, Close To the Edge (1973).

At which point, just as Yes were about to tour the album round the US and go supernova, Bill left the band to join their rival in progressive rock, the far darker and more experimental King Crimson. Led by guitar maestro Robert Fripp, the Crim had had chronic difficulty keeping a stable line-up since their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King back in 1969. Bruford’s arrival heralded the third incarnation of the band, much heavier and more guitar-driven and without the pseudo-medieval lyrics and elaborate song structures of Peter Sinfield. This darker sound came to the fore on the albums Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (1973), Starless And Bible Black (1974), Red (1974) and the umpteen bootlegs and live albums from the time.

MUSIC: After 42 years, Yes drummer knows the music by heart

After 42 years, Yes drummer knows the music by heart
The first time Yes drummer Alan White had to play songs from the 1972 album “Close To The Edge,” it was under less than ideal circumstances.
He was replacing Bill Bruford, who had recorded the album, and White had all of three days to learn the songs from that album as well as other material Yes planned for its tour behind “Close To The Edge.”
“It was pure insanity,” White recalled in a phone interview. “You wake up quite a lot, all day eating and sleeping Yes music. And I didn’t really have any hands-on rehearsal with the band. I think we did play together for an hour once, and then the equipment had to leave or something. So for me, it was like jumping into the deep end. All of a sudden I was in front of 10,000 people in Dallas all screaming their heads off and I had to play everything right.
“The first show, actually, I got pretty much everything right, and the band was kind of relieved because everybody was kind of worried about it,” he said. “And then the second, third and fourth shows, I made a few more mistakes, but by about the fourth or fifth show, I was kind of getting everything down.”
White has played the songs from “Close To The Edge” countless times since then, as he has remained the drummer in Yes for vast majority of the 40 years that have passed since then.

mostly antidotes/until emotions

and you feel as you did Zen
and being a child is like a white wall

Straining to re-collect those dropped leaves
to paste upon a painted Fall from Grace
If there is only WHAT HAS HAPPENED

FOLK MEETS JAZZ…Iain Matthews & Searing Quartet: Joy Mining, Iain Matthews & Egbert Derix: In The Now

Who would have guessed 20 years ago that folkie singer/songwriter Iain Matthews  would become a jazzer? Well, back in 2008 and 2011, Matthews cut a pair of albums that make up a winning combination of original tunes and jazz sensibilities .
Joy Mining from 2008 has Matthews with a team of Egbert Derix/p, Peter Hermesdorf/sax, Norbert Leurs/b and Sjoerd Rutten/dr delivering intimate moods to Matthews’ intriguing lyrics and delivery. The feel of the music on pieces such as “St. Theresa’s Ghost” or the gently driving “The Solid Stuff” remind you of the days when you’d memorize lyrics by the likes of Prine, Mitchell and Waits. Melodies as such on “Fishing” have Hrmesdorf’s sax glide over a feel from the Isles, while a back beat bop is felt on “Randolph Scott.” The closing “1944” is a harrowing tale, and while you may disagree with it being a “politician’s war” you can’t help but be moved by the pair of letters it conveys. Smart and artful.

DISCONTINUOUS NARRATIVES

"Hi,y'all!I'm from Antones! Gaptoothed smiler
with a curled dollar hanging out of his front pocket jeans

He stood at Givens Park before a soul gathered
and he wanted to sing! When Dana and Magic Jack arrived
he wanted to jam!So they sang with him/played guitars with him
all the soul of the 60s and peace songs of the past.He wanted the blues
so Elmore James and James Brown. He wanted loud-so ,with no PA
he serenaded the assembling crowd. His was the blue bird voice they first heard.
When the listening exercise finished three hours later-there he was-still singing
on that concrete stage in Givens Park, having birthed The New Movement
His blues from our past a start.New songs will arise. His was the last voice i recall
singing to the empty air that held the hopes of hundreds..

YES SHOW THEIR LIGHTER SIDE

Yes frontman Jon Davison has responded to criticism from some quarters about the band’s latest album Heaven & Earth.

And he says fans should put their expectations to one side and enjoy a “lighter shade” of Yes.

Davison tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “You have to go where the creativity takes you. At this stage in the game, they want to ease back into some almost relaxing music. I don’t mean to sound like everyone’s dull by any means because that’s not it at all. The music’s probably been interpreted that way.

“It’s just a phase in their lives where it’s kind of an easy-listening record. It just kind of warms over you if you let it. It’s a lighter shade of Yes."

Symphony of Light, a Fine Tribute to Michael Dunford

Renaissance - Symphony of Light
Renaissance – Symphony of Light
Renaissance
Symphony of Light (Symphonic Rock Recordings, 2014)

The new Renaissance album, Symphony of Light, is in reality a reissue of the 2012 indie release, Grandine Il Vento, with three bonus tracks: “Renaissance Man,” “Immortal Beloved” and “Tonight.”

Renaissance is one of the highly original progressive rock groups from the 1970s. Many of its early albums such as Illusion, Prologue, Ashes Are Burning, Turn of the Cards and Scheherazade and Other Stories, and the landmark 1976 live recording Live at Carnegie Hall, are true classics. Renaissance was characterized by its beautiful combination of English folk, classical music and rock with the gorgeous voice of Annie Haslam. Symphony of Light continues in a similar direction, with the signature vocals, piano, acoustic guitars, symphonic arrangements and prog rock elements. Annie’s voice has suffered some changes throughout the years, but she still delivers a fine performance.

The album is a bittersweet presentation. Renaissance’s guitarist Michael Dunford passed away prematurely in 2012. “Renaissance Man,” written by Annie Haslam and keyboardist Rave Tesar honors Dunford. Michael joined Renaissance in 1970 and Annie joined a year after that. They toured and recorded until 1987. In 2009 the band reunited, led by Annie and Michael for their 40th Anniversary tour. Since then, they continued to tour and write new songs.

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
