THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?

IT CAN COME AT ANY TIME
GRIEF IS A WOUND
that can be partially healed via release
So he cried at the death of his first girlfriend
regretted that cancer that stole her from life
and then, when another friend also died,he began to write
Lightning flash fiction hiding facts and faces
He wanted to exorcise the pain of loss
by tossing words into the hungry white page space
Lines filled until he stopped.Like rain
I will not say his tears .Just the urge to write it out
Left like a thief in the night.Leaving him lighter
less concerned with material things, when tugs of tides

pulled him into contemplation.Meditation.Upon endings..

JACKIE LEE CANADIAN REVIEW

JACKIE LEE – White Horses

Philips 1968 / Gonzo 2017

JACKIE LEE - White Horses
JACKIE LEE –
White Horses
Irish songstress’ stellar hour – expanded and enriched to add colors to her talent.
Were she as prolific as fellow dames Dusty and Shirley, Jackie Lee – known as Jacky back in the ’60s – we would have mentioned her name with the same reverence today, yet after a series of 45s, issued between 1955 and 1973, the singer retired due to throat problems. Heard on classics as diverse as Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Release Me” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” – which entered the charts in 1967 – Lee remains an indelible part of pop music’s DNA, her own career peaking the following year with a Top 10 single “White Horses” that came from a children’s TV programme to spearhead the artist’s debut, and penultimate, LP, ripe for rediscovery now.
There’s a great richness about Jackie’s voice, even though Lee doesn’t resort to overtly impressive vocal inflections to adorn a song in needless tinsel – that’s why these tapes ooze innocence and charm – but “I Can Sing A Rainbow” brings it all home after the stereo title track has wrapped her warm delivery in woodwind and caressed it with acoustic guitar. Done in the same vein, “I Think I Like You” is timelessly deep, while pieces such as “Too Many Chiefs (Not Enough Indians)” or “We’re Off And Running” are playful… yet she could be classy, too, as illustrated by the panache of “Things I Don’t Mean” with Dudley Moore on ivories. This reissue may have docked a couple cuts from the album in order to expand Lee’s profile by including her personal favorites, among them standards like “The End Of The World” and “The Loco-Motion” – the latter one of a handful pieces by THE RAINDROPS, a quartet Jackie was in – through which her personality shines ever so bright.
The artist’s optimism fills the orchestral sway and celestial harmonies of “I Cry Alone” and the violin-elevated sadness of “The Busker” that is the only remnant of an album she laid down with famed score composer Christopher Gunning, albeit the most surprising is its boisterous bent into boogie for “Here I Go Again” and rhythm-and-blues for “There Goes The Lucky One”: and that could be the singer’s motto, because for all these track’s dated production they stood the test of time to be as entertaining as they were decades ago. Still here today, Jackie Lee deserves to be remembered.

EXTREMES REVIEW

http://mlwz.pl/recenzje/plyty/19081-various-artists-extremes

Various Artists - Extremes

Artur Chachlowski , Various Artists - Extremes
"Extremes" is a 1970 documentary film directed by Tony Klinger and Mike Lytton describing the backdrop of the third edition of the famous Isle of Wight Festival. This is not a music video. Its creators - then barely twenty - did not have the opportunity to film their concerts. That is why they focused on the social, and actually sociological, theme of this event. The film focuses on a whole range of young people's attitudes - festival participants who use a more or less rationalized feast of hippie freedom. So we watch the carefree fans who are on the beach naked, teen drug addicts explaining why they chose to live with hard drugs, despite the fact that they are watching the effects of fatal overdose every step of the way, We follow the scene of harassment of casual passers by stray young girls behaving like women of light customs, who during this event seemed to for a few days at all costs want to lose their innocence. In addition, the phenomena and groups that mark their presence in this film is definitely more. Hippies, homosexuals, various fallen witches, Hell's Angels, alcoholics, uninhabited people, and 'normal' fans all represent some nonconformist minorities who have participated and, as we know, have in many cases made a great mark in this legendary festival. . In addition, the phenomena and groups that mark their presence in this film is definitely more. Hippies, homosexuals, various fallen witches, Hell's Angels, alcoholics, uninhabited people, and 'normal' fans all represent some nonconformist minorities who have participated and, as we know, have in many cases made a great mark in this legendary festival. . In addition, the phenomena and groups that mark their presence in this film is definitely more. Hippies, homosexuals, various fallen witches, Hell's Angels, alcoholics, uninhabited people, and 'normal' fans all represent some nonconformist minorities who have participated and, as we know, have in many cases made a great mark in this legendary festival. .
Gentlemen Klinger and Lytton do not judge. They do not make conclusions. They behave more like chroniclers documenting some unusual and new, as for those times, phenomena. And they do it very well. Precisely and naturally. As if they already sensed that they filmed events related to the feast of music and freedom, which will forever go down in the history of the epoch. The film's authors emphasize this fact with a special note that they did not arrange the scenes they filmed. They just documented what they saw. Nothing was organized before, manipulated or arranged: everything was filmed as it really was.
The music accompanying this film comes not from the festival stage, but from the studio. Specifically from the discs released at that time. The creators so skillfully matched the pieces to the film's illustration that they turned out to be a fascinating sound creation. Supertramp, Arc, Crucible and other artists. I do not have to add that the sound material is not only a great musical picture of the epoch but is a perfect supplement to this fascinating picture.
The first public screening of "Extremes" took place at the Cannes Film Festival'71. In the same year he was also shown at the London Film Festival. Now it appears for the first time on a DVD. In addition, you can find a movie with a special commentary and an interview with Tony Klinger.
And here is a list of songs that served as a soundtrack for this document.
  1. Arc - An Ear Ago
  2. Arc - Great Lager Street
  3. Crucible - Box Man
  4. Mark McCann - Black Rose
  5. Mark McCann - Refrigerated Warmth
  6. Arc - Let Your Love Run Through
  7. Crucible - Hit It
  8. Supertramp - Surely
  9. Supertramp - Am I Not Like Other Birds of Prey
  10. Arc - I'm A Perfectly Happy Man
  11. Supertramp - Words Unspoken
  12. Crucible - Elvish Queen
  13. Crucible - We Gotta Watch Out

JACKIE LEE

http://www.babysue.com/2017-Sept-LMNOP-Reviews.html#anchor80656

Jackie Lee - White Horses (CD, Gonzo Multimedia, Pop)
We've heard and appreciated various reissues from Great Britain's Gonzo Multimedia label over the years. This one's a bit different. Listeners who are fans of 1960s music will really appreciate this one. Jackie Lee's music immediately recalls a time when hit songs were often great, rather than always dismal and drab (which is the case in 2017, of course). The album is built around the well-known single "White Horses." The cover is great...it features Jackie standing beside a large white horse wearing a white turtleneck sweater. The title song, as well as the remaining tracks, have held up exceedingly well over the years. Various solo recordings are featured as well as a track recorded with Christopher Gunning ("The Busker") and several by Jackie Lee and the Raindrops. If you dig the sound of artists like Petula Clark and Jackie DeShannon, you're almost certain to fall in love with this collection. Timeless music that should appeal to a wide range of listeners.

STEELY DAN SOLO
TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTES
Every musician was hired,and tried
They were given no instructions-
just"play the blues".Many dollars
in recording time were spent in erasing tracks,
which did not meet their standards .Nothing wrong
with each and every-just that the Budget dictated
a freedom to spend widely.Jazz knows the syncopated magic
cannot be manufactured.Steely Dan drained the swamp of talented players
and made music that stood the test of "Reeling in the Years".Play them now
and they sound as fresh and jaded as Zen.To get those diamonds,
one has to put pressure on a lot of coal face digging.

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
