"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Home has a power to entice and entrance
Almost as much as physical family-
This vast hot unforgiving land.
It may be the spaces of our growing(but they change)
Come"home"to find all childhood homes estranged
Love now is for dying family and the core of land

at the Sydney Writers Festival,and loved THE VIVISECTOR as better than Faulkner,
I could see the despair where books mean less than beer,and sport sucked souls away.
Michael Dransfield (poet,heroin addict)summed it up-"To be a poet in Australia is the ultimate challenge"
It is because Realism is Religion-own a home,make money,enjoy the benefits.
We had all read Frank Hardy's POWER WITHOUT GLORY-more watched the ABC TV Mini-series..
We had read Donald Horne's THE LUCKY COUNTRY-and reveled in its naive optimism
Some had read Francis Xavier's POOR FELLA,MY COUNTRY..But not enough
The despair that streams through Australia movies is transmuted into forced laughter
GALLIPOLI to NEWSFRONT to MAD MAX to ROMPER STOMPER to PRISCILLA,QUEEN OF THE DESERT to CROCODILE DUNDEE
Of course,actors and writers had to leave-to return ,enriched ,to lodge back in Oz
More live overseas,from (deceased)John Hughes to Booker Prize winner Peter Carey in New York
Those who stay embrace their continuity.They are at ease in this tragedy.This land sings different languages..
