Frank Zappa, “Improvised Concerto for Two Bicycles, Prerecorded Tape, and Instrumental Ensemble” (1963)

A very young Mr. Zappa, in full-on Edgard Varèse mode, goes on the Steve Allen show to demonstrate the use of the bicycle as a musical instrument. Hilarity follows. What you see below is one of my all-time favorite Frank Zappaclips. Frank the young composer was calm, earnest and mostly serious as he tried (and mostly succeeded) to show how a non-traditional “instrument” might still have musical qualities. Steve Allen, because it was his job, cracked wise even as he was bowing the spokes of an overturned bicycle and blowing into the handlebars of another.
It should be noted though that as the segment ended, Allen did realize that Frank was serious about this stuff — bringing up choreographer Alwin Nikolais, whose unorthodox methods reminded him of Zappa.

Hero Worship: Cliff Martinez on Captain Beefheart

Captain BeefheartSoundtrack composer (Drive, Only God Forgives, Sex, Lies and Videotape) and former drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Dickies, Cliff Martinez tells us of his lifelong love for Captain Beefheart, and what it was like to work with him
FEATURE BY CLIFF MARTINEZ.
PUBLISHED 27 NOVEMBER 2013
Don Glen Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, has been my musical idol since I was 13 or 14, and remains so to this day. Usually, your musical heroes fade as your tastes change, but his music is still a big inspiration to me. I'd like to think that in some way he has had a powerful influence on my music.
In a nutshell, he invented his own unique vocabulary for the music he made. The first thing that sucked me in was this completely new language for the drums. John 'Drumbo' French played the drums like nobody else. I don't even know where it came from, that style. I've talked to him, and he mentioned his own influences –Sandy Nelson, Ginger Baker, and some other guys, but it just didn't sound like anybody I'd ever heard before. It sounded like a completely fresh take on an instrument that millions of people play, and that millions of people have recorded – somehow he found something completely and totally new and different. A different way of thinking about it and approaching it. It was the same for the bass, same for the guitars and the other instruments. It's the same for Beefheart's composition – I don't think there's anything like it. You can't even describe his music without using the word 'Beefheart.' To this day, that's what I want to be when I grow up.
Working with Beefheart, he was really demanding – it was very hard to keep up. You had to have a tape recorder running at all times, because a lot of the things he wanted to capture would be spontaneous, improvised things that he would not be able to repeat. That might be a vocal performance, or he might sit down and get you to play the drums, giving you directions like 'Give me that thing that's meat on a plate with red asparagus dangling through the teacup,' or 'You know! Giant blue babies levitating over mountaintops.' And you were on your own! So it was really, really hard work, but it was my Gary Cooper, High Noon moment. I had a front row seat to experience his process. I don't think there will ever be another chance like that.

ALAN WHITE ON CRUISE TO THE EDGE, ROCK HALL AND NEW YES ALBUM

Rob Shanahan

After four decades into their singular career, Yes have been enjoying an unlikely renaissance. Back in 2011, the iconic prog-rockers released ‘Fly From Here,’ their excellent 20th studio LP — and their first since parting ways with founding singer Jon Anderson.

Sure, the lineup has shuffled a bit, but the drama has now subsided: The band’s long-running core trio (bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Alan White) are currently joined by a reliable former keyboardist (Geoff Downes) and an engaging new frontman (Jon Davison), whose high, piercing voice is both eerily familiar and impressive on its own merits. Progressive rock — a genre so often slung through the critical mud over the past few decades — is finally cool again.

Over the past couple years, both Genesis and Rush have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — and now Yes have been nominated for the 2014 class. Overall, it’s a great time to be in Yes: Earlier this summer, they headlined their own prog festival (named, you guessed it, Yestival), and next April, they’ll take their intricate tunes to sea for their second-annual Cruise to the Edge.

We recently caught up with Yes drummer Alan White. Along the way, we chatted about the cruise, their Rock Hall nomination and their plans for a new studio album.

First off, huge congrats on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination. I spoke to Chris Squire a while back about the possibility, and he said he didn’t have much of an opinion about it. What about you?

Sure, man! Everyone ought to be excited about it, but we just carry on being musicians and just get on with it. At the same time, it’s a great experience to get recognition on the public side when you’ve been in the business for such a long time.

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling writes:

PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENSE
YOUNG,INNOCENT,PRESUMPTUOUS
Projecting blind sunshine trust in a fog world
Extending bridges of trust over emotional chasms
Papering over family cracks ,castes,clans
Unaware of ends/barely knowing pain
Compromise only comes when necessary
Bargaining,negotiation-for survival,rations,results
Innocence burns off like a heat shield
Worlds unfurl like a flag you used to salute
until you see those bloodstains in patterns
like rows of white teeth memorials on too green lawn
New words some to you-distance,ennui,despair
Languages of emotional responses file past your bedroom
Some take you for a time/always limited
You want childhood's simplicities-yet you are complicit
in these sagas dividing time into segments

one of which may be your only epitaph.

Geoff Downes: back into orchestra with a PANIC ROOM singer

Over the years, there’ve been a few albums released by the BUGGLES, YES and ASIA keyboard wiz Geoff Downes under the NEW DANCE ORCHESTRA moniker, such as "Vox Humana" from 1992. The latest one, “Electronica,” was out in 2010 but was extremely limited and receives its proper release only now. It’s a special one in that it doesn’t bear Downes’ name on the cover and features a great singer on the grooves: Anne-Marie Helder who rose to prominence with MOSTLY AUTUMN fame and now fronts PANIC ROOM that have just wrapped up the recording of “Incarnate,” a next-year follow-up to 2012′s brilliant "Skin".

In Geoff’s words, “The concept of the NEW DANCE ORCHESTRA is to create entirely ‘virtual’ orchestrations, utilizing a variety of musical instruments made up from computerized technology and other various audio resources. ‘Electronica is the result of a collection of carefully crafted songs using these orchestral treatments on each individual track in different ways.” More so, it’s highly danceable as well as intellectual.

Steve Hackett: An intimate chat with the prodigious guitarist of 'Genesis'

British virtuoso guitarist, singer and songwriter Steve Hackett is a musician’s musician. While Hackett’s musical realm is limitless, he is widely renowned for his intricate progressive and classical rock guitar stylings and composition withGenesis. But over the years, Steve Hackett has affectionately embraced numerous musical genres while brilliantly composing, arranging, and recording track after track of pristine musical enchantment.
Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited-Genesis Extended will be performing at the newly renovated Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida on Thursday April 3rd 2014 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets visitwww.rutheckerdhall.com or call 727-791-7400 for more information. Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited-Genesis Extended will also be playing on FridayApril 4th at Plaza Live in Orlando and on Saturday April 5th at Parker Playhousein Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Born in Pimlico, London, England, Steve Hackett initially developed a fondness for classical music. Hackett’s father Peter was a multi-instrumentalist. Hackett’s earliest band associations were with Canterbury Glass and Sarabande. His first recording experience transpired as a member ofQuiet World. The group also featured flautist/guitarist John Hackett, his younger brother.
In 1971, Steve Hackett made his studio debut with Genesis on the album Nursery Cryme. The classic lineup became Peter Gabriel (Lead singer), Steve Hackett(Guitarist), Tony Banks (Keyboardist),Mike Rutherford (Bass guitar), and Phil Collins (Drums). Genesis became touted for their intricate musical arrangements and instrumentation along with frontman Peter Gabriel’s raconteur theatrical stage antics. During this time Hackett became an early pioneer for an electric guitar technique called “tapping” which is more commonly used on instruments like the Chapman Stick.
The Peter Gabriel Genesis era released albumsFrom Genesis to Revelation (1969),Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound(1973), The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974).
In 1975, Peter Gabriel left Genesis to pursue a solo career. After auditioning hundreds of singers to replace Gabriel, it was decided to promote Phil Collins to the new lead singer role. Genesis had been perceived as Peter Gabriel’s band by many of their fans until the release of the critically-acclaimed … A Trick of the Tail album in 1976. The release featured an incredible musical accord between bandmates and became a masterpiece. Later that year …A Trick of the Tail was succeeded by the Wind & Wuthering album, another exceptional effort by Genesis.
In this interview … Hackett revealed that Disney had a huge influence on Genesis throughout the 70’s. After the Hackett penned “Entangled” lyrics were introduced to Phil Collins, Collins said the song had a Mary Poppins feel to it.

Yes Drummer Alan White Very Excited About Band’s Rock Hall Nomination

Yes is one of the defining bands of the progressive-rock genre, and yet the veteran U.K. group has so far been overlooked by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  That may all change in the coming weeks, as the band is among the 16 acts nominated for induction into the Rock Hall in 2014.
Drummer Alan White, who joined Yes back in 1972, tells ABC News Radio that he finds the prospect of finally receiving the prestigious honor “very exciting,” while noting that many people have told him how surprised they are that the group hasn’t already been inducted.
“I, in fact, know quite a few people who are already in the Hall of Fame, and they turn around and tell me, ‘I can’t understand why I’m in there and you’re not,’” he reveals, “because they based their music on some of Yes’ earlier pieces.”
For his part, Alan says, “It’s just really great to be nominated in the first place and it’ll be even better if we can actually get inducted.”
One of the interesting aspects of Yes’ history is that the band’s lineup has featured so many different members over the years — nearly 20 in all.  White suggests that this may make for an unpredictable situation at next year’s ceremony.
“It’ll be interesting to see what the choices are on who actually gets to perform at the induction ceremony, if we make it that far,” he declares.

“Smoke on the Water” Incident On December 4, 1971.(Claude Nobs)

Which of the following contributions did Claude Nobs make to rock and roll?

A. Carried teenagers through broken glass to escape the Frank Zappa concert fire that inspired Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.”

B. Persuaded Deep Purple not to scrap “Smoke on the Water” and is the reason for its inclusion among the rest of the Machine Head tracks recorded in Montreux, Switzerland.

C. Founded the Montreux Jazz Festival.

D. All of the above.

If you answered “D,” you’re right. Five years prior to the fire that reduced the Montreux Casino to rubble in 1971 – an event described in the lyrics to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” – Nobs founded the Montreux Jazz Festival, which is still held annually deep among the snow-capped mountains of his hometown. The festival has become internationally beloved and is now, in its 44th year, running through this Saturday along the shore of Lake Geneva.

A handsome, bespectacled 74-year-old with a wide smile, Nobs remains the driving force behind the festival and a faithful music fan, enthusing about both modern artists (“Joe Bonamassa is one of the most amazing guitar players I’ve heard in a long time”) and classic rock acts like The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and his old pals Deep Purple, who alluded to Nobs with a “Smoke On The Water” lyric: “Funky Claude was running in and out / Pulling kids out the ground.”

Nobs vividly remembers the day the fire began at the Frank Zappa concert he had organized. Deep Purple had come to town to record their next album at the Montreux Casino. Staying in a hotel across the water from the venue, the band watched in horror as it caught fire and burned to the ground after a Zappa fan fired a flare gun into its opulent ceiling. Nobs not only rescued concertgoers from the blaze, but also helped Deep Purple regroup afterwards, offering them a new place to record and informing what would become their biggest hit. From the side stage of most every Montreux concert of note, he has changed the course of rock and roll. As he himself says, “I wanted to be a guitar player, but I found out very quickly I was not good enough for it. So I said, ‘Maybe I can do a festival. I can do something more interesting for the crowd than try to be a guitar player.’”

You’re halfway through this year’s festival. How involved are you these days in selecting the artists who perform there?

I am doing basically all of the special projects for the festival. Like tonight, you have a special project with German, English and Swiss artists. That’s something I like to do – not to just pick out one name and put him onstage; it’s a bit more complex. On the 9th of July we had Angelique Kidjo doing a tribute to Miriam Makeba with Baaba Maal, Asa, Vusi Mahlasela, etc. Those are the things that aren’t done by other festivals so it’s of interest to the audience to discover new artists, new arrangements, new songs, and that’s one part that makes Montreux so well known. Every year we juggle with ideas, and during the year before the festival, some new ideas come. I do a lot of travel, I meet a lot of musicians. One idea we are working on, for the 40th anniversary of the recording of Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, is to recreate the record which was done 40 years ago. We’re also talking of doing a guitar summit, which would take all the top guys and put them together on one stage.

Dave Cousins remembers the Strawbs with Rick Wakeman

File:Witchwood.jpgThe Strawbs’ founding father Dave Cousins tells an hilarious rock and roll story, when, just as the sixties turned to the seventies, a fresh-faced keyboardist by the name of Rick Wakeman joined the band.
Cousins recalled: “Rick came in for a chat and I said, ‘Listen. What are you doing next week?
“He told me he was getting married.
“When I asked him where he was going on honeymoon, he said he couldn’t afford it, so I said come to Paris and join the Strawbs.”
Wakeman signed on for £25 a week, long before he found mega stardom and disappeared to some far-off planet of cape wearing prog-rock excess.
“Rick’s honeymoon was playing under a big-top circus tent in a rock and roll circus, with high wire act, a couple of clowns and some jugglers.
“Suddenly, during one of Rick’s solos, Salvador Dali jumped up onstage, and the audience just gasped and then went crazy.
“Rick turned around and said: ‘Who’s that?’ I said, Salvador Dali.’
He said, ‘Get him off the ******* stage now.
“It was surreal at the time, one of the funniest things I’d ever seen.
“Rick played on three of our albums and then suddenly he became the supreme keyboard player in the country and he joined Yes on £100 a week.”
