THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"

OUTBREAKS OF ENTHUSIASMS
Random and unpredictable as weather
There have been recent examples of
both individual and group enthusiasms
which have transcended hobby proportions.
People have been arrested for laughing in airports
especially when directed at TSA or security personnel
Outbreaks of laughter in banks and corporate offices
have led to the evacuation of whole businesses
when folk could simply not take Wall Street seriously.
The election of Bernie Sanders as President
has diminished Trumpitis, and folk have found new outlets
to direct their comic genius.Volunteers have guided young activists
into environmental activities which they now take quite seriously.
Prior to this, the young could not take politics seriously(nor religion)
and this became no laughing matter.Soon, their elders followed..

i find myself singing PRINCE songs
which is fine, yet only a short time ago
i was singing EAGLES songs
and before that DAVID BOWIE
humming along after they had "left the building"
Liked ELVIS movies -never saw him live
`Pre-DVD,played those videos-BLUE HAWAII
JAILHOUSE ROCK,like HELP and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
after John was murdered, and George cancered out.
Sometimes i go to George Harrison Memorials
sing -a long poetry style to those too-familiar lyrics
but it was not always like this. When Hendrix died,
i gave away all his records(yes,i had ALL his records
and tears fell in 1980 when John was shot down.
The rate of exits may be faster now.We may be as old as our heroes
Grief is still a flame of anger(that they should leave us-
here, bereft of lyrics, leaving us to replay their unreleased bootlegs

while they decompose in another Vault.

Fish out of Water: A Voyage into Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band

Photo: pausaparanotas @flickrThe first time I heard about Captain Beefheart was when he died in 2010. I probably listened to a few tracks back then in a half-hearted homage to van Vliet. However, I must have not taken much from it as I am only now coming round to beginning my voyage into his musical discography properly.
So why am I only starting now? Well, my theory is that I was daunted by the prospect. Similar to artists like Neil Young, Frank Zappa or Tom Waits, Beefheart’s musical library is vast and its range large. Questions such as ‘Where should I start? With the most known album or the first? Should I immediately understand it? Am I too late to fully enjoy this artist?’ et cetera usually remain unanswered and I crawl back into a metaphorical cave of familiarity and assured appreciation of my musical listening. With a three week holiday consumed by a dissertation I decided now would be a good time to get out of the cave and get into Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band.
I started not with any album but with a documentary on Captain Beefheart narrated by the late John Peel. In it, I learnt about the Captain’s obsessive and, at times, brutally authoritative personality. One story remains prominent in my mind of how he kept his band cooped up inside a house for eight months during the recording ofTrout Mask Replica, only allowing them to leave for groceries. At one point, a member recalls living on one cup of soya beans-a-day. “Ok,” I thought, “this guy is slightly crazy, but the genius ones usually are.”
I then began my listening experience in chronological order. First up, 1967’s Safe As Milk. This album I really enjoyed from the first listen. I’ve probably listened to it three or four times now and will continue to do so. What struck me was the structured nature of the songs. I was expecting an avant-garde mess of an album; abstract and obtuse; unforgiving for a new listener. But it wasn’t. Instead I was welcomed by a collection of catchy songs, none more so than ‘Yellow Brick Road.’ ‘Electricity’ is really something. That voice is remarkable and is nothing like I’ve heard in music before, almost like Darth Sidius from Star Wars has joined a band. ‘I’m Glad’ was unexpectedly beautiful as well with a sort of Sam Cooke vibe.

New Rick Wakeman Compilation Features Ex-Yes Keyboardist Playing Various Classic-Rock Covers

Purple Pyramid Records
Purple Pyramid Records
Over the last several years, ex-Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman has contributed to various star-studded tribute albums saluting such famous rock bands as The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd and Supertramp. Now, a new compilation titled Starship Trooper has been released that gathers together a number of those songs along with some previously unreleased tracks.

The 13-track album includes cover versions of The Doors’ “Light My Fire,” The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me,” Pink Floyd’s “The Great Gig in the Sky” and “Nobody Home,” Supertramp’s “Crime of the Century,” 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love” and Yes’ “Starship Trooper.” The record also features a previously unreleased rendition of Tool’s “Sober.”

Accompanying Wakeman on the various songs are such other respected musicians as current Yes members Steve Howe and Billy Sherwood, ex-Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye, Starship singer Mickey Thomas, Vanilla Fudge’s Carmine Appice, King Crimson’s Tony Levin, XTC’s Colin Moulding. In addition, William Shatner is featured on the song “Change,” which originally appeared on the Star Trek actor’s 2013 prog-rock concept album Ponder the Mystery.

Wakeman says of his recent work as a guest musician, “It’s always challenging to be involved in tracks of other people’s music and other people’s arrangements as it often makes you think and play differently and certainly on many of these tracks I play in quite an unexpected way, but there again, much of my life has been pretty unexpected anyway!”

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
