The upcoming Frank Zappa documentary Who the Fuck Is Frank Zappa has broken the record for the most money raised for a documentary film on Kickstarter.
The doco on the late musician, directed by Alex Winter, raised $876,362 – and it’s not even closed yet. This figure easily eclipsed the previous high of $859,425 which was raised for the Bill Nye Film project.
Speaking about his reasons for wanting to make the documentary Winter explained:
“Frank Zappa is one of the strangest, most amazing and influential figures of our era. But his definitive story has never been told.”
“But before we can finish telling Frank’s story, we have to catalogue, save, digitize and preserve a vast archive of unreleased audio, video, and more. And when we do, we’ll have everything we need to finally answer the question: Who the fuck is Frank Zappa?”
The documentary, which has the Zappa Family Trust’s approval, will aim to explore the innovator’s life through countless hours of previously unseen and unheard footage. “This is not an easy story to tell and we trust that Alex truly understands the complex and multifaceted man that my father was,” Zappa’s son Ahmet said.
The focus will shift throughout the decades as Zappa and his band’s made their indelible mark on musical history. However, the documentary isn’t the only one currently about The Mothers Of Invention leader. Eat That Question aired at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and received rave reviews.
