"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"
IT IS GOOD TO KNOW OF A RENAISSANCE
even when it occurred in another time and place
and was limited in scope to patrons and their selected artists
It still produced changes that are felt today
leading to demands for a NEW Renaissance
which may or may not be happening..If our aim
is to lift,elevate and distill positive refinements in our culture,
then we see both positive and negative creative impulses acted upon.
Technology is neutral(until it creates weapons that kill creators of culture)
Art is also neutral,in that it can be propaganda or ad hominem attacks
Culture is never neutral.Indigenous cultures have been plundered,pillaged,ignored and repressed.
To even regain indigenous languages will require research and dedication.
Not just another sequel of "AVATAR"
Same with working-class culture,Hispanic Culture,and all heritages ignored by the mainstream.
Art of refugee camps?Migrant art?There remains a wealth of untapped inspirations,
only used in advertising and documentaries at present.The NEW RENAISSANCE
will have to wait-until we learn both listening,equality,and respect.
