Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band: Live From Harpos 1980
26/06/2014
During his teen years in Lancaster, CA Don Van Vliet becomes friends with Frank Zappa, with whom he shares an eclectic taste in music and comes in '64 with The Magic Band playing and claims fairly quickly the leadership under the name Captain Beefheart, derived from the working title of one of Zappa's film projects. The avant-garde of the blues-rock combo draws attention with an interpretation of the Bo Diddley borrowed 'Diddy Wah Diddy.' On 'Safe As Milk' the blues influences are prominent. "Strictley Personal ', unmatched produced by Zappa monumental dual boot" Trout Mask Replica "and the equally experimental album' Lick My Decals Off," are less accessible futuristic projects with a free, quirky fusion of jazz-rock and psychedelia and surrealist poetry.
In the seventies Beefheart returned to the blues roots and more classically structured pop with 'The Spotlight Kid' and 'Clear Spot' and is followed by extensive tours; also in Europe. So I Beefheart experienced on a drizzly Pinkpop in '74 besides Steeleye Span, Cockney Rebel, Status Quo, and guitar god Rory Gallagher Beefheart on the poster insert as a substitute for Dave Mason. "Mirror Man" opens a funky, very accessible to Beefheart standards, set built around song work 'Unconditionally Guaranteed'. The Captain impresses with its highly Howlin 'Wolf foreign vocal lash out. Meanwhile, the original members of the Magic Band disappeared, but with a younger generation of musicians is still very much work delivered as' Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) "and" Doc At The Radar Station ". The dating from '82 'Ice Cream For Crow "is a sublime farewell.
In '82 draws van Vliet retired from the music to completely focus on. Painting The live recording that we get here dates back to 1980 in the wake of 'Doc At the Radar Station "has performed Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band in the Harpo Theatre in Detroit. Supported by bassist and keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman and drummer Robert Williams, we hear the trio guitarist Jeff Morris Tepper, Richard Snyder and Jeff White Tapir in a starring role. After an intro and an insanely "Nowadays a Woman's Gotta Hit a Man" from the beginning of the period dating 'Abba Zabba' follows. The main part consists of material from 'Doc'. The voice of the captain was no longer as powerful as yesteryear but with his tireless efforts and tight rhythm grafted songs like 'Hot Head', 'Ashtray Heart' and 'Dirty Blue Jean "and he makes an overwhelming impression with the then-new material . For fans of the first hour, there is next to 'Safe As Milk' and 'Kandy Korn' a fine selection of 'Trout Mask Replica' with 'My Human Gets Me Blues ", the drawn-out epic" The Dust Blows Forward' n The Dust Back blows. With 'Suction Prints' and' Big Eyed Beans From Venus "is the anarchist set closed. More than fifty-three minutes grandiose chaos, a fine souvenir for fans of the deceased in 2010 musical genius.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
