When Mark E. Smith died at the beginning of last year, an era died with him. He was one of the select few who saw the Sex Pistols play at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1976. I think it was the legendary Tony Wilson who said that, although there had only been a relatively small audience at this iconic performance, after seeing the London four piece, everyone in the audience – which included future members of the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, and others - went out and formed a band. And, as history relates, Mark E. Smith was one of these enthusiastic punks.
One of the things that was most interesting about punk rock was that the initial performances by the Sex Pistols and The Clash jumpstarted careers of all sorts of people who were grouped together under the rough heading of ‘punks’, but actually produced music in a wide range of different styles. And it could be argued that The Fall, who produced thirty two studio albums over the next forty two years, were one of the most interesting, and certainly one of the most experimental.

Smith once said that “rock and roll isn’t even music, really. It’s a mistreating of instruments to get feelings over.” The Fall, who fused angular, spiky rhythm with Smith’s complex and often dark imagery, was probably at its best when the band were playing live, with Smith taunting the audience and feeding off their energy. Take a listen to this record, and you will see exactly what I mean.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
