BARBARA DICKSON: A letter from Barbara

Hello Everyone!

Well it's certainly been an eventful few weeks since the New Year. I've spent two of them up in Scotland and had a thoroughly great time. The 'Far, Far from Ypres' concert was more successful than I think anyone involved thought it would be. It came from humble beginnings and the extent of interest in it has been phenomenal. Ian McCalman has never done anything like it before - it was quite theatrical in a way, but the music was a mixture of dry humour and sadness. The relentless cheerfulness of the songs worked so well with what we know about the awfulness of the First World War.

Recording of the forthcoming E.P. for my shows with Rab has gone really well. It's very simple in its approach, with only two guitars and two voices on each track. It's the nearest you'd ever get to a 'live' recording which is what we wanted. It will allow people to take away a souvenir of us when we play our shows in the Spring and also shows how Rab and I work together musically.

Rab's recent show at the Mitchell Theatre was superb and I was really happy to be included in his list of friends there on the night. Emma Pollock, Alice Marra and Jill Jackson are all big favourites of his and I was honoured to be included. We sang 'Buttons and Bows' from Rab's forthcoming CD 'I'm Walking Here' and I sang backing vocals on 'Branch' from his 1974 album 'Red Pump Special' which is being re-released. I sang the vocal part which was originally sung by Gerry Rafferty.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
