Ginger Baker, the innovative and volatile drummer best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith, will release a new studio album titled Why? on June 24. The eight-song collection, which will be the 74-year-old Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer’s first new record in 16 years, features him performing with his current touring group Jazz Confusion.
Why? finds Baker digging deep into his jazz roots, as well as exploring his passion for African rhythms. The album is made up mostly of instrumentals, and includes covers of Wayne Shorter‘s “Footprints” and Sonny Rollins‘ “St. Thomas,” as well as an adaptation of a Nigerian folk song called “Aiko.” The title track was inspired by Baker’s own personal troubles, and finds him reflecting on his losses and struggles. The song currently is streaming exclusively at RollingStone.com.
Why? is available now for pre-order as a digital download at iTunes.
