Grimsby Auditorium’s Rick Wakeman masterstroke proved a sensational evening

It is hard to believe that 40 years have passed since Rick Wakeman released his album Journey to the Centre of the Earth; the concert tells a story that in itself is celebrating 150 years in 2014.
Jules Verne’s story was also famously brought to the screen and featured James Mason and Pat Boone going deep into the Earth’s crust to fight with dinosaurs, dance around giant mushrooms and escape through an erupting Italian volcano – exciting stuff it is true and Rick Wakeman performs all of this to music. The original album became a landmark achievement and sold more than 15 million copies.
Rick Wakeman and the New World Symphony Orchestra accompanied by the English Chamber Choir and the English Rock Ensemble are celebrating this anniversary with a series of concerts that take in the Royal Albert Hall and the Grimsby Auditorium was fortunate to host one of just 14 UK venues last week.
The show came in two parts with Rick humorously telling the story of how this masterpiece was brought to the stage and the many trials and tribulations that came with producing the album.
Then in part two there was pure nostalgia that thrilled those that grew up listening to this iconic rock crossover album.
Rick’s humour and interaction with the Grimsby audience was very entertaining and those lucky enough to witness the event warmed to him immediately.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
