Review: Barbara Dickson at St Mary’s Church Nantwich
Famous for her lead roles in West End musicals, unforgettable hit singles and as an actress, Dickson took to the stage with her pianist accompanying her, opening the set with the ever popular ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, much to the crowd’s delight.
Her performance lasted about an hour, with some insight into her life as she stopped between songs to tell the story of the next track.

Project Object carries Frank Zappa’s legacy to River Street Jazz Cafe with alumni Ike Willis and Denny Walley
More than 20 years after his death, Frank Zappa’s music, ironically, is reaching a much wider audience than it had during the three decades he toured. While most of his new fans can credit the Internet as the basis for discovering music that flew under the radar of the mainstream for decades, many of Zappa’s former musicians are thankful the music was discovered, and those fans are embracing the opportunity to see his musical partners carry on his legacy.
One outfit who has been using Zappa alumni since the mid ’90s is the insatiable Project/Object, which will finally make its return to the River Street Jazz Café in Plains on Oct. 23. Throughout the last 20 years, Project/Object has played with Zappa legends like Don Preston, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Ray White.
One of the heavyweights on this current tour, guitarist Denny Walley, was just a teenager when he met Zappa in 1957. From the start, Walley and Zappa shared a common respect and admiration of the blues and doo wop, two elements that defined most of Zappa’s career. Forming a bond with Zappa before he put out records and being looked at as one of Zappa’s go-to guys for many lineups, Walley is cautious when a Zappa band asks him to play with them, unless it’s Project/Object.
“One thing about expectations: if you have them, you’re bound to be disappointed,” he said. “Anyone wanting to play the music, I champion them … the short answer is, I’ll go out and jam with some bands, but I won’t go out for an extended tour with a group, unless it’s with someone like Project/Object who always has alumni and real quality players.”
Another Zappa heavyweight on tour – who has consistently toured with Project/Object – is the legendary baritone vocalist/guitarist Ike Willis, a fixture of Zappa’s bands from 1978 to 1988. Willis and Walley had a unique connection before Willis was formally a member of Zappa’s band. He saw what Walley is capable of, and is enthusiastic about the current tour.
“Denny will surprise you,” Willis said. “You’ve got to remember: Denny and Frank grew up together. He knew Frank since he was a teenager, and he knows a lot more material than people give him credit for. The thing about Project/Object is, we play every genre of Frank’s music; we don’t leave too much out. Sometimes it depends on the other personnel – who we have on keys, drums, bass, etc. As long as we have a strong keyboard player and a strong drummer, we could pretty much hit anything out of the park. With Denny, it gives us a little more versatility as well, vocally, but it gives us another guitar player who could throw stuff in as well. It’s also his attitude, sense of humor, and approach to the music that I love too. Denny kind of took me under his wing before I even got hired by Frank. He’s my adopted big brother; he took me under his wing when I was 20 years old.”

GUITARIST STEVE HACKETT OPEN TO GENESIS REUNION
GUITARIST Steve Hackett has revealed he is open to playing with prog rock legends Genesis again if the band ever reforms.
There has been mounting speculation the 70s rockers could play together again.
The 65-year-old Hackett was part of the legendary line-up alongside Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel.
His guitar parts are fundamental to Genesis’ influential albums like Nursery Cryme and the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
Hackett will headline the Music Hall tonight to recreate those halcyon Genesis years and also perform solo material.
And he admits to a yearning for Genesis, who met up briefly for a 2014 documentary, to take to the stage together again.
He said: “I would be open for a Genesis reunion.
“The fact that I honour the Genesis material and carry the candle for the band shows I would say yes to playing together again.
“However you have to remember there has been an awfully long time waiting for that.
“I was part of that golden period of Genesis when Peter Gabriel was involved and I am still drawn to that music.
“A lot of people who went on to become leaders in their field were involved in those early efforts.
“Genesis were different from most progressive bands as we were not driven by technique.
“It was a bit ramshackle at times and we deliberately allowed it to breathe.”

"We Did It, Mom": Frank Zappa’s Roxy The Movie Premieres in LA
Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood hosted the world premiere of the late Frank Zappa’s Roxy The Movie last week. The concert film, over 40 years in the making, presented Zappa’s now legendary run of 1973 shows at the Roxy that resulted in his stellar Roxy and Elsewhere album. The film’s existence is somewhat of an improbable triumph; suffering at the time of its making insurmountable technical difficulties, with the raw footage stored away in Zappa’s vault until its resurrection this year.
“We did it, Mom!” shouted Zappa’s son Ahmet in an emotional introduction prior to the screening; the Roxy project being one that he worked on closely with his mother, Gail, who passed away on October 7, leaving the evening both somber and celebratory.

Legendary bands Toto and Yes perform at the Greek Theatre in LA
Legendary rock bands Toto and Yes performed to a sold out crowd at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on September 6th for the final shows near the end of their tour. Both bands joined forces to give dedicated fans a concert to remember and the chance to witness the greatness of their music. Toto opened the show and performed many of their classics including "Hold the Line", "Africa", "Rosanna" as well as material from their awesome new album "Toto XIV". The band members including Joseph Williams (Vocals), Steve Porcaro (Keyboards/Synthesizers), David Paich (Keyboards), Steve Lukather (Guitar), Keith Carlock (Drums) sounded better than ever, if that's even possible! The audience was instantly reminded of the pure excellence of such talented musicians, all under one roof.
Singer Joseph William's voice sounded amazing as he soared through each and every note with ease, giving the fans just what they wanted to hear on their favorite Toto songs. Meanwhile, guitarist Steve Lukather played an emotionally charged guitar solo of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing", which also brought the house down. David Paich and Steve Porcaro as always, added their legendary touches to the keyboards and synthesizers, which have made Toto one of the most successful bands in the world. Let's not forget the awesome sounds of David Hungate on bass and Shannon Forrest on drums.
The performances from both bands was nothing short of spectacular especially for those who had never seen a Toto or Yes concert before, including myself. It was truly an honor to catch this incredible show and see first hand, how amazing their music sounded live. It is easy to see how Toto, who formed in Van Nuys CA, 1977 have sold over 40 million records worldwide throughout their hugely successful career, according towikipedia.

Delves Infant School struck a chord with ex-Yes musician Rick Wakeman when pupils triumphed in the inaugural finals of the DriveSafe & StaySafe Road Safety Song Contest.
The children's rap song It's All About Road Safety, which included the lyrics 'Because you know I'm all about the stop, bout the stop, look, listen', impressed the former Yes keyboardist.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?
Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
