Grandmothers of Invention Zappa The Scene

Musician, Sixties counter culture icon, freedom of speech campaigner, strident critic of religion, ripping guitarist, distributor of bonkers offspring names (Moon Unit, Dweezil), lyricist of the social, political, and, for a time, Czechoslovakia's Special Ambassador to the West on Trade, Culture and Tourism.

A prolific career which took in doo-wop, rock, jazz, and classical music, ended with his premature death from prostate cancer in 1993, after an incredible 62 albums (which with posthumous releases has risen to 100).

It all began with his band The Mothers of Invention, and their debut album Freak Out!, released in 1966, immediately establishing Zappa as a radical new voice in rock music. The sound was raw, the songs titles were 'out there' (Who Are The Brain Police? and Help I'm A Rock are two examples) but the arrangements were sophisticated, with lyrics praising non-conformity, disparaging authorities, and his work would increasingly come to find a place for seemingly conventional love songs.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
