Pink Fairies review

Title - 'Naked Radio'
Artist - Pink Fairies

For those not in the know, the Pink Fairies are an English rock band initially active in the London (Ladbroke Grove) underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug taking and anarchy and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as playing for free outside the gates at the Bath and Isle of Wight pop festivals in 1970, as well as appearing at Phun City, the first Glastonbury and many other free festivals including Windsor and Trentishoe.
Well, the wait for something new from the legendary Pink Fairies is now over, because they are releasing their brand new album - the first in over three decades - this January. Entitled Naked Radio and released via Gonzo Multimedia, it is the first studio recording by the majority of this line-up of the band since Kill Em and Eat Em in 1987.

Fronted by Andy Colquhoun, who shared guitar duties with Larry Wallis on this album and was also the legendary late Mick Farren’s long-time MD and collaborator in The Deviants, the band reformed in 2013. Joining Andy on guitar and echoing their original twin drummer line-up, is George Butler from the “Previously Unreleased” EP replacing the long-departed John Alder. Also featured is Brighton chanteuse and percussionist Jaki Windmill.

Indeed, the Pink Fairies also played a selected number of UK shows through 2014 and 2015 and now much to the excitement of Pink Fairies fans worldwide, the new album Naked Radio - which was brought together via a Pledge Music campaign - is now available to order.

1. Golden Bud
2. The Hills Are Burnin'
3. Runnin' Outa Road
4. When the Movie's All Thru
5. I Walk Away
6. You Lied to Me
7. Midnite Crisis
8. Stopped at the Border
9. Spellbound
10. Down to the Wire
11. Skeleton Army
12. Mick
13. Naked Radio
14. Deal Deal

In truth, this brand new album (their fifth studio album) from the Pink Fairies could also be simply construed as one mighty acid drop flashback to an era of music long gone, but it is so much more than that. For it is also a must-have for all true lovers of music. It is heartfelt, it is raw, and it is, for the most part, a musical showcase that defies time.

Having played a lot of these tracks live back in 2015 and 2016, the band have also fully admitted that out of all 14 of the tracks they like the title track 'Naked Radio' the best. And, to be quite fair, it does stand out as being one of the more fully rounded from the quintet.

Inclusive of three songs culled from the late Mick Farren-written lyrics - 'Naked Radio', 'Skeleton Army' and ' When the Movie's All Thru' (sung by Andy Colquhoun) - it's been 45 years since their very first studio album, nearly 30 years since their last album, and, well, it's as if they never left the recording studio. Sure their sound might not be as hectic as it once was, especially in the drumming department, but the Pink Fairies still know how to recreate a musical moment in time here on Naked Radio.

Drummer Russell Hunter has also admitted he doesn't think there will ever be another Pink Fairies album after this one so my advice would be to buy this new album, hopefully on its pink vinyl 2LP set via Pledge Music, put the needle down, and just let the wondrous spirit of upbeat, good-time rock and roll-fused psychedelia '70s sounds all sink (back) in.

Al Atkins Belgium review translated

http://www.musicinbelgium.net/pl/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=8366

Not perhaps knows enough but it must be remembered that Rob Halford is not the original singer of Judas Priest . The famous group of British heavy metal, to whom we owe everything in terms of pomp and metal culture, has actually had its genesis in a Al Atkins as vocalist. This is also Al Atkins is responsible for the founding of Judas Priest in that distant year 1969, with his accomplices Ian Hill (bass) and Glenn Tipton (guitar), always original members of the Priest of today ' Hui. But in 1973, not seeing the success for his band arrive, Al Atkins, married and father of a little girl, abandons the music to find a "suitable" job. The following year, Judas Priest will release their debut album "Rocka Rolla" , with some songs written not Al Atkins. The rest is known.

So Al Atkins spent the next decades in a factory or an insurance company, whatever, and returned to music only when the prospect of the pension came. Some solo albums in the early 1990s attracted the attention of a tiny circle of amateurs who did not forget that Al Atkins was the creator of Judas Priest. But by the time he returned to the front row to replace Rob Halford when he left the Priest in 1992, there was a step that the other members of the group did not cross.

Left definitely on the sidelines of Judas Priest when Rob Halford returned to the band in 2003, Al Atkins continued his musical projects. First with another solo album in 1998 ( "Victim of changes" ), where he resumed all of Priest songs he had written  : "Never satisfied" , "Winter" , "Caviar and meths" and of course " Victim of changes " , fabulous song Judas Priest published the original hard album " Sad wings of destiny " in 1976. Then Al Atkins joins with guitarist Paul May for Atkins May Project which emits into the atmosphere some albums in the 2000s, including Valley of shadows " (2012) and Empire of destruction " (2014).

As our comrade Michel Serry in his column on "Valley of shadows" , Al Atkins has rebuilt his reputation original member of Judas Priest focusing all its efforts on the memory. We find this trend on his new album "Reloaded" which exploits again the few songs written by Al Atkins the early days of Judas Priest. Atkins insists on the nostalgia of the Priest by resorting to Ian Hill who comes to lend a hand to the bass as a guest. Other prominent guests, there is Roy "Z" Ramirez (Bruce Dickinson, Halford) on guitar, John McCoy (Gillan) on bass, Stu "Hammer" Marshall (Death Dealer) on guitar, Tsuyoshi Ikedo (Unviel Raze ) on guitar, Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) on vocals, Chris Johnson (Holy Rage) on guitar and of course the old comrade Paul May on guitar, as a permanent member, accompanied by drummer Rob Allen .

"Reloaded" is the re-recording songs written by Al Atkins during his musical career, of course with a heavy emphasis on Judas Priest period. We thus find new versions of "Winter" , "Never satisfied" and "Victim of changes" , who would have thought. But it is always nice to hear good songs from Judas Priest and as these pieces are naturally excellent, new versions are also played here a pleasure, including the huge "Victim of changes" . The guitarists perform prowess during disheveled solos and all this does a lot of good to the eardrums. It also plays with the rediscovery of songs Al Atkins non-priestiennes but retain the good will of the authentic heavy metal ( "Coming thick and fast" , "Money talks" , "Cradle to the grave" , a "Love at war " very influenced by the " Painkiller " by Judas Priest). Finally, say a word about the title "Mind design" is presented in two versions  : a very metal design placed second on the album and extracted a historical version of a demo of Judas Priest at the time when Al Atkins Was the singer. This little extract not very well recorded is one of the rare audio testimonies of the genesis of Judas Priest. Amateurs will appreciate all the more.

Let us therefore salute the persistence of the metallic faith of Mr. Al Atkins, who will turn 70 next year and who still defends - and with good reason - his past as a father founding heavy metal.

Nico tribute US review

http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=19554

Young, James: Songs They Never Play On The Radio

For those of you who grew up listening to The Velvet Underground and are familiar with the work of Andy Warhol you likely know the name Nico. The German singer sang on the first Underground album The Velvet Underground & Nico released in 1967. After that album she had a pretty successful solo career in the '70s and has influenced a great many artists. In the early '80s British musician James Young while attending Oxford University met Nico who eventually provided the lead vocals for his band Faction. They subsequently toured the world together until Nico's unfortunate death in 1988. In 1993 Young published his memoir Songs They Never Play on the Radio about his adventures travelling with the enigmatic vocalist. The album Songs They Never Play On The Radio came a year later. Fast forward to 2016 and the reissue of said album. It must be stated this is not the same album although a few songs from it are included as well as other tunes culled from the time the artists worked together.

Really, this album is quite a moving tribute to Nico. The music is also similar in style to Nico as Young captures a minimalistic and experimental kind of folk music you could imagine Nico doing if she were alive today.

The title track is an absolutely memorable tune as a subtly reverberating drum beat drives the tunes folky acoustic guitar and a moody keyboard soundscape. It's a mellow vibe yet intense at the same time, particularly the feeling of forlornness conveyed in the lyrics. On the instrumental "Breathe For Me" the style is much more experimental. A breathing machine forms the backbone of the song which is what Nico wanted to commit to tape years ago as her son lay in a hospital bed tied to the machinery keeping him alive. Another haunting atmosphere can be heard on "Down By The Wannsee" with its ethereal harmonium and piano melody. The reference of Wansee refers to a lake near Berlin which is a popular tourist destination with a dark past having been the place where the Nazi's met to discuss the extermination of Jewish people during World War II. In this light the bleakness of the music makes perfect sense. "The Door" is another minimalist folk tune describing Young's first meeting with Nico. On "Burn Away" it is all about Young's deep vocals as he half sings/speaks over gentle acoustic strums and an ethereal moodiness that is almost palpable.

Songs They Never Play On The Radio is a deeply rewarding listen, emitting both light and darkness, an album that needs to be heard by all fans of Nico and her unique musical style.

Track Listing:

SPIRITS BURNING French Canadian review translated

What will happen if we Gong and Hawkwind mixed? It makes Spirits Burning! We can say from the outset that this album is different for several reasons. First, we note that everything is well cared for: the production and mixing are exemplary, the attention to detail is present, the album cover is beautiful, the sound is rich and full of roundness, and especially the plethora of musicians and instruments bring an original touch.

After a dozen albums, Don Falcone brings his knowledge and experience to benefit and help musicians and progressive music. Located in California, Falcone, in addition to his albums, producing music for TV and film industry. For this new project, he partnered for the second time keyboardist Cyrille Verdeaux, whose name tells you something maybe, who is the architect of the "Clearlight Symphony," release on Virgin label. "The Roadmap In Your Head" is constantly with contributions from musicians Gong of all time, starting with the late Daevid Allen. then recognize the Theo Travis saxophones touch, Steve Hillage, Bridget Wishart, Alan Sitar Brown and so on.

Musically, the album is mostly instrumental, very modern, like a box of chocolates. In fact, each piece is different, compact and polished to perfection. It reveals touches of Gong (of course!), The contemporary King Crimson, Hawkwind or Brian Eno. All these influences make it difficult album to be classified in a particular category: a bit psychedelic, a little space, a little art-rock, a bit ambient, a little 'trance', electronic or jazz, but all is never confused or mixed. The rhythms vary and it seems to make a little trip back in time through the synth atmospheres and electronic keys. Negative: some parts sound too much like the film music, but they are a minority. I am struck by the hypnotic power of certain instruments that are the framework on which the grafted violin, harp, and organ.

For example, "Sun Sculptor and the Electrobilities" surprises with its arpeggios and a beautiful voice. "The Birth of Belief", she demonstrates the live piano Verdeaux. "Isolation in October 80" sounds easternmost because of the presence of the zither, but combined with the sultry voice cabaret style of Bridget Wishart, the result is interesting. "Mrs Noonness" is very catchy with this repetitive organ that supports the violin. "Fuel For The Gods" is the longest part (13:05) and is reminiscent of the relaxing tropical beach. Beautiful. One of my favorites is "Outsiders Parachute In" viral song, delicate, and floating. "The Unknown Street" is a nod to the 60s with a guitar in James Bond. You see the evocative power exercised Spirits Burning! And finally, possibly in tribute, walking closes with the voice of Allen, this magical poet.

"The Road Map In Your Head" turns a fabulous album, both simple and complex, carved with heart and love, all for our pleasure. Strongly recommended, essential if you are a fanatic Gong. Congratulations Mr. Falcone!

Al Atkins Spanish review translated

http://elcomentamierda.blogspot.com/2017/01/al-atkins-reloaded.html

Alan Atkins does not need introductions, he's a metal legend. In case there is any clueless I will tell you that this is the first singer who had Judas Priest. He left the Judas Priest without getting to record any album, just some model and precisely the result of that first experience with the Judas Priest, after developing a solo career that began in the late eighties, quite solid.

Al Atkins has other projects where he plays new songs, projects like Holy Rage or Atkins / May Project. As for his solo career he has albums with new songs such as Heavy Thoughts, Dreams of Avalon or Judgment Day. But it also has another that pulls the legacy of Judas Priest as it is Demon Deceiver or Victim of Changes. This work also draws on the legacy of Judas Priest basically, those who know his discography because we appreciate this kind of issues but we have a little something, but if you do not know Al Atkins you will be pleasantly surprised.

These issues are very similar to the Demon Deceiver , repeated almost all subjects, just as it does with guests. Kicks off the album with Winter, an issue with the stellar participation of Ian Hill on bass, bassist friend of Atkins and eternal Judas Priest. I highlight the work in the production with a touch very seventy and dark that clearly benefits the themes.

Mind Conception is a half-time with a passage of doubled guitars where he collaborates with his habitual guitarist, Paul May that manages to give a touch seventy and very of the Judas Priest. A Void to Avoid is an issue where Stu Marshall, Tsuyoshi Ikedo, Rob Allen and Paul May
participate. It sounds intense and gives a rocker touch quite atmospheric and with its original point.
Just review the best tracks of his solo career, it's like a kind of compilation but with guests. Heavy Thoughts is an issue of Al Atkins belonging to his early days that has a touch very similar to sin after sin. Atkins always with his grave voice, without having a privileged voice must be said that always sounded with a lot of personality.

Little does the version of Never Satisfied Atkins with Judas Priest, Atkins is much more rock, it is a subject where it returns to participate Ian Hill safekeeping must really enjoy doing these topics under study, subjects that Judas Priest does not usually play live. Money Talks is an insistent and aggressive theme with a work very accomplished distortion in the guitars and always manages to sound with a dark hue.

One of my favorite topics solo career Atkins was always Cradle to the Grave , it is the most intense of all the work topic, but in this case, the production so dirty and seventies, does not benefit him. Love and War is a theme that presents a guitar work oriented towards the American Power metal to me reminds me of the early days of Metal Church.

Victim of Changes is the fetish theme Atkins who collaborated in the lyrics of this issue in his time with Judas Priest. A different version of the Priest and with the participation of Ralf Scheepers, a singer who always dreamed of singing for Judas Priest and the truth is that the subject is left to ring, also involved Roy Z and Rob Allen.

The last gift of Al Atkins is the subject Mind Conception , a Judas Priest demo of 1971, a treat for the listener. In short, it is always nice to hear from Al Atkins who knows always surround himself with very good musicians.

SPIRITS BURNING Canadian review

Band: Spirits Burning & Clearlight
CD Title: The Roadmap In Your Head
Label: Gonzo Multimedia (2016)
Rating: Satisfying 3/5

Well, here we go, Don Falcone and that musical collective known as Spirits Burning are back with another release, this one entitled The Roadmap In Your Head. As with a number of other releases, Spirits Burning works with others and here the billing is shared with Cyrille Verdeaux’s Clearlight. This is actually the second time they have teamed up and it makes for an overall pleasant and engaging listen. Musically there is a little bit of everything here from the expected classically influenced electronics and synths to a Gong flavored light jazzy vibe. But then there are also folk-inspired pieces strong on flute and acoustic sounds. Given the fact there are upwards of thirty-five musicians performing on this disc, including a number with strong connections to the world of Gong, it should not be surprising to hear the variety of musical styles expressed. Clocking in at a total of seventy-five minutes, there are fourteen instrumental compositions ranging in length from two and half minutes to the longest being just over thirteen. Over all the stylistic feels that regularly shine through would include classical, ethnic and light jazz. Some of the shorter tracks tend to stay with one of those genre-types or at least a variation of it while in the longer pieces, those six or eight minutes there is a blending of the styles as a tune weaves its way through different musical segments. The general mood of the music is relaxed, floating, pastoral and often a little groovy. Which is not to say there aren’t moments with a little more energy, but those do tend be few and far between. Some of the tunes build in psychedelic energy, starting off soft and sparse but then gaining in intensity and jazzy flair. Here’s where you think – Gong. Then, every-so-often the Clearlight electronic classical sounds shine more predominately giving the composition a spacier vibe. There is a lot to like about this release; in fact it’s become my favorite Spirits Burning listen. It’s just so many groovy musical vibes happening and it doesn’t need to HIT you over the head. Instead it just burrows its way into your head…just as the title implies.

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling, yer Gonzo Grande Fromage, writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Thom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied within seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not?"

What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
