"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)
TEXAS HERITAGE MUSIC DAY
OUR ANCESTORS(OUR FOLK CULTURES)
adapted
to Texas in astonishing ways-
much
of their life home made and hand made-
from
inks and rope to home cooking on chuck wagons
they
learned from indigenous to share stories songs and epic tall tales.
So
it is that open air and under tree @Schreiner University, annually
schoolchildren
are bused in -to learn their Texas folk traditions.
In
a tipi made for tales, from a table with lassos and saddles
from
a man in a coonskin cap holding a flint lock musket packed with black
powder
another
in chaps lassoing students.More with acoustic
instruments-fiddles,guitars,squeezeboxes
sharing
Texas songs and melodies to sing a long with. And poet/storytellers-to celebrate
Jimmie Rodgers's songs-
his
family comes along(the Schreiner community is strong)-to pass the torch of folk
cultures on.
Diversity
and openness.Endless learning experiences. Each goes away with more of themselves
-
learning
from elders and ancestors-new ways of adapting to Texas .Each year,a new
lesson.Every day,a Festival!
