She appeared on The Two Ronnies, acted in the musicals Blood Brothers and Spend, Spend, Spend, and on TV in Taggart and Band Of Gold.
Now 67, she lives in Lincolnshire with her husband Oliver Cookson, an Assistant Director at the BBC, with whom she has three sons, Colm, Gabriel and Archie.
“I was born in Dunfermline in September 1947. My dad was a cook on a tugboat and my mother, who was from Liverpool, was a very good singer, although she didn’t work professionally.
“I knew I could sing better than most people, but that didn’t mean I had the confidence to do anything about it. I learned slowly but surely how to play guitar.
I would play the pop hits of the time: Everly Brothers songs, Shadows hits…
"I loved The Beatles when they came along, and then, when I was 17 and started going to the local folk club, I discovered Bob Dylan as well as the traditional music of the British Isles.
“In 1969, I recorded an album, The Fate O’ Charlie, with Scottish folk singer Archie Fisher.
"My first solo album, Do Right Woman, came out in 1970. But my career changed course after I met playwright Willy Russell.
"He invited me to Liverpool to sing Beatles songs in his musical John, Paul, George, Ringo… and Bert.
