Rob Ayling writes:
"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)
BILDUNGSROMAN
Montaigne to Modernism - i love essays!Oliver Goldsmith's Travel
Tales
were
my Marco Polo.Voltaire set my Master Huron /Candide compass.
I
come from a land of vernacular-where short stories were orally
transmitted
via
voice,history,jokes,puns,lies,legends,myths and gross gossiping Irish
exaggerations!
I
sat at the feet of Celtic storytellers(Robin Williamson)and Spalding
Gray
as
they spun yarns and weaved among true as well as hyperbolic projected
personae.
This
is why i am inoculated from any semblance of
"REALITY"T.V(oxymorons!
and
why i turn off PBS' Lake Wobegon and avoid David Sedaris.
His
personal commentaries have spawned PULPHEADS like Sloane Crosley
(I
Was Told There' d Be Cake),John Jeremiah Sullivan and Davy Rothbart(My Heart Is
An Idiot)
These
are not interesting people.Their BIG LIES are small fog romances/quicksand
details.
They
morph stand-up comedy /shaggy dog stories/immature fantasies into
mock-essays.
Their
idolatry of self and endless solipsisms cast no light upon the exterior
world
Much
prefer Sheila Heti's "HOW SHOULD A PERSON BE?"-it is time to
question
projected
identities and mock realism.Truth -or dare?I'll read both -in magazine
format,not blog!
