British rock supergroup Asia have parted ways with their world-famous Yes guitarist Steve Howe – and replaced him with a 25-year-old Midland unknown they found on YouTube.
The internationally acclaimed band, formed in 1981, selected Sam Coulson, from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire to join them after watching him perform on 51 uploads on his internet channel, which has 7,573 subscribers and just under two million views.
Fresh-faced Coulson is decades younger than his new bandmates John Wetton, who performed with King Crimson and Roxy Music, Geoff Downes, keyboardist with Buggles and drummer Carl Palmer of groups including ELP and Atomic Rooster.
Coulson said: “I am deeply honoured and excited to be taking up lead guitar duties in Asia following Steve Howe’s departure.”
The Midlander, who began performing on the internet in 2007, when he was aged just 18, attracted Asia’s attention when he was interviewed by American guitarist Paul Gilbert, who rose to fame playing in Racer X and Mr Big.
