For Steve Hackett, his recent Genesis remake projects have provided an opportunity to work in a more congenial atmosphere — away from his old band’s built-in rivalries.
“It very much had some of the aspects of Genesis,” Hackett says in this clip, “but without the competitive aspect. I really rather liked the idea of, ‘here was a ship with a captain’ — rather than the crew all trying to take the helm, as it were.”
Hackett has announced North American dates in support of his current Genesis Revisited II effort, which follows a similarly themed 1996 project called Watcher of the Skies. The guitarist was part of Genesis during one of its most creative periods, between 1971-1977, at the tail-end of the Peter Gabriel era and the beginning of the Phil Collins-led lineup that followed.
“I wouldn’t disparage all of the Genesis joint efforts,” Hackett adds. “I think that we came up with marvelous stuff, collectively. But obviously, the stresses and strains of that have been talked about quite a lot. Genesis did start to shed members.”
The Genesis Revisited II tour, which has already seen celebrated dates in the UK, Europe and Japan, begins a round of dates in the U.S. and Canada on September 20, 2013 and continues through mid-October. Previous set lists have included Genesis fan favorites like “Firth of Fifth,” “Musical Box,” “Supper’s Ready” and others. Hackett is then set to take part in the 2014 Cruise to the Edge event, to sail from Florida to Jamaica next March.
