Sound Check: The Animals are "dead" to Eric Burdon

It’s been a productive year for Eric Burdon.

The frontman for the Animals and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who also worked with War and recorded as a solo artist since 1974, released his first new album in six years, “’Til Your River Runs Dry,” in January and has been writing his third memoir, “Breathless,” which he hopes to publish during 2014. But acrimony with his former bandmates has kept Burdon from getting too excited about the Animals’ 50th anniversary this year.

“From my personal point of view, the Animals are dead,” Burdon, 72, explains. “They killed themselves. I kept using the name (with different band members) for strictly promotional purposes so that young kids would associate the Animals with the Beatles and the (Rolling) Stones and that period ... but I got sued for using the name by former members of the band.

“So for me it’s the past. I’m all for allowing other people to do and say what they want to say, but for me it’s over, and I’m on my own.”

There will, of course, be some mention of the Animals in “Breathless,” but Burdon says the book will explore different aspects of his life than its two predecessors.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
