Local musician revisits Hendrix’s ‘Rainbow Bridge’

Shortly after releasing the UFO- and alien-inspired combination DVD and CD “Area 51 Suite,” Arroyo Grande singer, songwriter and guitarist Merrell Fankhauser is reaching into the past to explore similar themes in a film by a guitar legend.

“Rainbow Bridge” was a 1972 film featuring Jimi Hendrix, who had died two years before, and a cast of eccentrics using his music and numerous UFO sightings to explore their spirituality.

Fankhauser is now delving into the film’s message more fully with “Rainbow Bridge Revisited.”

He said the documentary was Maui journalist Steve Omar’s idea, and the two produced it together.

Fankhauser said the two had fun looking up and interviewing some of the original cast of the Hendrix movie that was filmed on Maui.

He said it was interesting to hear their tales about hanging out with Hendrix and the UFOs they said hovered around during the filming.

The new one-hour DVD documentary also features surfing footage and music by the Space Patrol and Omar and the Wavespies as well as Fankhauser.

It also comes with a bonus CD that includes a soundtrack with Fankhauser’s surf-styled version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” which Hendrix covered.

Fankhauser’s version is now No. 1 on four radio stations and is getting airplay on 67 nationwide.

...BECAUSE SOME OF US THINK THAT THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT
What happens when you mix what is - arguably - the world's most interesting record company, with an anarchist manic-depressive rock music historian polymath, and a method of dissemination which means that a daily rock-music magazine can be almost instantaneous?

Most of this blog is related in some way to the music, books and films produced by Gonzo Multimedia, but the editor has a grasshopper mind and so also writes about all sorts of cultural issues which interest him, and which he hopes will interest you as well.
