Steve Howe is releasing early demos of songs from both Yes’ Fly from Here and Asia’s XXX projects. Homebrew 5continues a series of home recordings the guitarist began releasing in 1996.
Fly From Here, Yes’ first studio effort in a decade, grew out of left-over music from the group’s Howe-dominated 1980 album Drama. Meanwhile, XXX celebrated the 30th anniversary of Asia’s founding — and it also marked Howe’s last collaboration before leaving to focus on Yes.
“Most tracks were recorded at Langley Studios,” Howe says, “where I write and record my ideas in Devon. Later, they usually get re-recorded or collaborated with other writers. I perform and record these basic ideas myself, which is kind of taken from the tradition that guitarists like Les Paul and Chet Atkins started when tape recording and over dubbing became possible at one’s home location.”
Volume 1 in the Homebrew series focused on work Howe did for GTR — his 1980s collaboration with Genesis alum Steve Hackett — and with Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe. Home Brew 2 then featured demos from Yes’1990s projects Union and Keys to Ascension, along with some early solo work.
