Music documentaries are normally feast or famine. Vangelis and the Journey To Ithaka is an insightful and celebratory look at arguably the premier composer of electronic music over the last fifty years. A beautifully shot and meticulously constructed epic showcasing friends, colleagues and a rare glimpse of Vangelis improvising new music.
Some of the footage shot is rare and previously unreleased while engaging interviews include time spent with Sean Connery and Oliver Stone. Of course the evocative harmonic calling card for Vangelis is the Chariots of Fire Academy Award for best film score. The impact of Vangelis transcends genre moving through the improvisational realm of modern jazz to a more ambient electronically based orchestral style that brought him into the mainstream of modern film scoring.
Moving past what has been a predictable wheelhouse for some, Vangelis joined forces with YES front man Jon Anderson releasing several critically acclaimed albums in the early 1980's. A pioneer in modern music, Vangelis and the Journey To Ithaka is sure to please.
