GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES ,(With
witches and ovens and elves and goblins
have scared children before
Christmas bedtime for years.European children fear
Krampus,a goat-like creature in
Austria and Hungary who devours chilren each December.
Germans (and Pennsylvanian
Dutch)children fear Belsnickel,who kidnaps them!
And that Icelandic Yule cat
/who also kidnaps children who do not wear new clothes at Christmas
Goats are part of the
iconography-the Gavle Goat made of straw,detroyed by fire or
vandals
Tio de Nadal(Caga Tio)-a
Catalan Christmas log and blanket beaten to reveal gifts
And that fear of witches in
Norway-where they "hide the broom"
contrasts with our
American/Bostonian new tradition of the SANTA SPEEDO RUN
where(for charity)folk in
skimpy clothing run down city streets for charity.
Olde Europe-full of violence
and witchcraft and stolen children
New World America-full of
WalMarts and KMarts and Targets
Easy to see why we invented
Kwanzaa..
