Longtime Jefferson Starship guitarist Mark “Slick” Aguilar is in need of a liver transplant and an online campaign has been started to help him raise funds to pay for the bills he expects to incur because of the operation. According to a message posted on his official Facebook page, the veteran musician has been suffering from hepatitis C and his doctors have given him a 50-percent chance of surviving for two years if he doesn’t get the transplant.
Aguilar tells ABC News Radio that, at the suggestion of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh — who underwent a liver transplant 14 years ago — he plans to have his operation in Florida, where the wait for a donor likely will be shorter than in other areas of the U.S. While Slick does have health insurance, it won’t pay for all his medical bills or his out-of-state living expenses, which is why the initiative has been launched. The guitarist stressed to ABC News Radio the importance to get checked for hepatitis C, and also strongly suggested that people consider becoming organ donors.
