Chris Squire says Yes will be at work on a new studio album through February, with songwriting contributions expected from current frontman Jon Davison. That’s not the only change, however, as Yes will probably be missing one key contributor.
“We’re at the beginning of putting together ideas for a new studio album that we’re going to work on in January and February,” Squire tells CBS. “And so that’s exciting to have someone with fresh ideas and Jon is a writer as well, so I’m looking forward to that.”
Squire compares Davison’s arrival to that of Trevor Rabin before 1983′s blockbuster 90125, in that it has similarly reinvigorated the veteran prog-rock outfit. “It’s part of the way the cog turns, when you get new input from new members, in a way, that’s what keeps Yes fresh,” says Squire, the only member to have appeared in every permutation of Yes. “Not that I’ve ever planned that there would be so many comings and goings, but it’s just worked out that way.”
In keeping, participation by Trevor Horn — who returned to produce Yes’ comeback album Fly From Here in 2011 — is “not looking likely,” Squire adds. “We’re trying to do something different this time. But we haven’t decided about producers yet. I can’t tell you anything yet. Although I would work with Trevor Horn any day of the week. I have a great relationship with him. We all agree on that, really, but maybe we should try somebody different for the next album.”
