Visiting Disney World is the Modern Version of Making a Medieval Pilgrimage
LIKE JEAN BAUDRILLARD and MIRCEA
ELIADE
I ,too,flew in to Orlando,hired a
car,drove to Disney World
I wanted to see Captain Eo(3D Michael
Jackson 8 minute epic)
but also to examine the
(imputed)transformational processes.
Of course-HUGE car park,and entrances
where you paid
Then lines for every attraction winding
forward and back.
Rides seem briefer than the
waiting.Whether the design was Medieval,
the waiting was punishment.Between
narrative and symbolic,
i journeyed between Republicanism and
Monarchy(Main Street vs the Palace)
Then the conflict between
Past(Frontierland)and the Future(Tomorrowland)
Finally Childhood (Fantasyland)vs
Adolescence(Adventureland)
This design has spawned satellite
shrines from Paris to Tokyo.
Walt Disney and his Imagineers had drawn upon
historical Castles
and contemporary Outdoor Museums-but
the fatal attraction
is the Myth and Mystery weaved from
imaginary anthropomorphic creatures
replicated from TV,movies and decades
of FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT.
The addiction is real-a second
childhood for parents
A "safe" space for children.I left my
pilgrimage with empty pockets and no wisdom.
