Most of you know that my day job is the Director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology; the world's largest cryptozoological research organisation. An awful lot of what we have been doing in recent years has been using cryptozoology as a gateway through which kids who are increasingly divorced from the reality of the natural world can discover the joys of nature. I recently heard about an organisation who are doing the same thing, but with music:
"When it comes to making sure every kid gets a first-rate education, music matters. Little Kids Rock believes that learning to play a musical instrument can be a transformative experience in students’ lives, with the power to inspire the creativity and confidence that are critical to success in school and beyond. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to restoring and revitalizing music education in U.S. public schools. We bring free musical instruments and music instruction to underserved schools across the country"
Steven Van Zandt has been active within the group:
Little Steven and his wife Maureen co-hosted our third annual Right to Rock benefit, which raised enough money to bring music into the lives of over 10,000 additional students! He also visited a school in the Bronx and delivered dozens of instruments. "Having instruments in their hands gives them empowerment to control where they want to go."
The October 16th gig in New York is to honour Steve Van Zandt, for all his work for the charity. Yesterday Michael Des Barres emailed me:
I'LL BE SINGING AT THIS EVENT IN NEW YORK ON OCTOBER THE 16TH.. TO HONOR STEVE VAN ZANDT AT HIS REQUEST...
Right on Michael! Kudos to everyone involved.
